Sadly Shirley passed away this past year at the ripe old age of 72. Thankfully, Solomon was able to meet her one last time on her 70th birthday in 2018. RIP Shirley, it fills me with happiness to know that at least the second half of her life was spent with people and pachyderms that truly loved her.
That's surprising actually. For an elephant that was in the circus trade nearly a century ago she lived the normal life expectancy of an Asiatic elephant. I'm glad he got to see her. Elephants are amongst a small group of non-primate land mammals that have something very close to our own cognizance. They think and feel a lot like we do. On some level, they understand us, probably better than we understand them. The only other creatures like this are cetaceans, dolphins whales and porpoises who have about the intelligence of a 3 year old if not more. These creatures of the sea and land can recognize themselves in a mirror. That's something everyone needs to take note of because not many creatures have that ability.
Oh, how much you use miss your sweet Shirley. Free at last are the most beautiful words. I adopted and fund Shirley. She is even in my will! I related to her when I first found this site as, I, too, limp from being paralyzed in a car accident. Chris takes such awesome care of all the ellies. I only wish I could hug her!
@@deliasadler8845 That's so sweet! It's also so rewarding!! I wanted to adopt an 🐘 when my Dad passed so when I read about Namalok, I KNEW he was the one! Solomon, worked with you at LPGZ back in the 80's. Much you taught me and much you've been admired in my eyes. When not working the reptiles I was fortunate to be a roving keeper, working with the hoofed stock, birds and primates. Shirley, my favorite followed by Bertha the hippo, Benny the Orangutan and Rupert the griffin vulture. Truly amazing times and memories. RIP Shirley, your life came full circle and grateful that Solomon was there with you. Sad to have to edit this but just found out Solomon James passed away at the age of 69, 2 days ago. Shall they be reunited.
He dedicated his life to loving her. I’m convinced that she didn’t die of loneliness because she had him. I’m sorry to hear of his passing, but I believe that a God, who created animals before us humans and loves us as much as He does, loves them enough to bring them home to Heaven, when they pass. Innocent souls. May Solomon and Shirley blaze new trails together… with her perfect legs.
I have seen this video many, many times and still cry every single time. I look for Shirley on the EleCams on TES's website each day, and lately she's not around, but they posted today that she is traveling in the cooler nights now.
I agree! I watched it twice and my heart was full. To witness the love and attentiveness that Solomon provided for Shirley. It was very sad to watch Solomon’s goodbye but beautiful to see her reunite with her brave conrad of two decades. Such a beautiful reunion! 🐘🐘💕🙏🏻
"I do not know who was the first to put chains on her....but I am glad I was the last who took them off"....poignant, profound words by a simple, loving, compassionate human being....Solomon you are my hero.....
That made me cry. The significance of that one line alone. If I was still teaching History, I’d use this short film to teach a very interesting lesson about slavery… but with a very unique twist. Those were words spoken with resounding power, yet such eloquence from such a gentle, tender, caring, and loving man. There’s a HUGE teachable moment right there.
Goodbye Shirley, you died with dignity today. After a many years of abuse and loneliness, you survived long enough to find freedom and an old friend. I hope I survive long enough to witness the evolution of the human species- from one that treated animals as nothing more than a commodity, to souls that care deeply for the wellbeing of other sentient beings. We still have a way to go, but we're getting there. Fly free beautiful soul.
SO Beautifully shared and written, FairylightStudio. Such an incredible story of unconditional love and survival, cried watching, knowing in my heart that it is 2023 and the human species still have a long wayyy to go. RIP Shirley, and Solomon, you are an Angel, thank goodness that Shirley had your love and friendship through those years! What happened to Shirley's friend when she passed?
I saw this elephant when I was a kid at the zoo in Monroe, I always felt SO sad for it because it had a lame leg decades ago. I can't BELIEVE this is that SAME elephant, what a truly happy ending for her, so happy to see this. And Solomon, I don't know you personally but I love you.
Susan Boyce I thought the same thing. I'm from Monroe, and remember as a child going to the zoo and seeing her. Its truly amazing that she's finally free.
I use to sneak her grass through the tall wood fence at her enclosure. This was around the back of the exhibit. I always felt sad for her because she never walked much with her bad leg. Never new how it got that way. She is a true survivor. She seems much happier in the sanctuary video. Playing in the ponds. She couldn't do that here at the Zoo. Sorry that her pal Jenny is gone. Funny though. I learned more about her in a few minutes than I knew in the 20+ years she was here. I grew up less than a mile from the Zoo. Just outside the city limit. I heard monkeys every morning. I heard "Cheepah" and "Cheepah II"(Lions) Roar many, many times form my home.
so moving! Solomon was so self-less in his goodbye... thinking only of her happiness and how she'll never have to wear a chain again... never mentioning his own sadness and loss... he just was glad for her.
Solomon, thank you so much for being the one light in Shirley's life for so long. I know she will never forget your kindness and your caring. May God bless you. What a lovely video.
I've adored Shirley my whole life. grew up in West Monroe/ Farmerville and now an adult in St Louis. I still havey grey stuffed elephant I got at the Louisiana purchase gardens and zoo when I was an itty bitty thing. Of course her name is Shirley and I cut her ear to match Shirley's when I was 4/5 yes old. I'm so happy to see her free and happy with her family!!! what a joy to see this and especially HER after all these years!!! I love you Shirley!!!! always will!!!!
What a moving story! I am crying! Humans are so cruel to animals sometimes. We need to stop putting elephants in zoos. This sanctuary seems to be the perfect place for them to live out their lives. Bless you Solomon for being so kind to Shirley! Thank goodness for people who care!!
kimberly barr What a kind and sweet post Kimberly. I agree with you, humans can be very cruel. But remember that it was a human by the name of Carol Buckley who started the elephant preserve and it was a human named Solomon James who cared for and loved that elephant for all those years. Maybe if all of us remember the story of Shirley the elephant and told all our friends and family how important the wild animals are to us and this planet, then maybe we will see more stories like this that have a happy ending. God bless.
***** there are so many people who have made a huge difference in the lives of captive animals. I think the tide is turning and people recognize that big beautiful wild animals don't belong in zoos. Zoos do great work but there are just certain animals that don't seem to thrive in captivity and we need to make special provisions for those. These sanctuaries seem to be a great alternative
Very emotional watching this video. Must admit I had 2 pause it a couple time to wipe away tears since I couldn't see through them. I feel for Solomon having spent so long with Shirley having to say goodbye. Even though he knew she would be in better place it doesn't make it any easier. THANK YOU Solomon for caring & being a friend to Shirley! And THANK YOU Elephant Sanctuary in TN for giving these elephants a great forever home! Captivity for human abusement NEEDS TO END!!
Thank Goodness for you Solomon James... you dear man. You were probably the only bright spot in Shirley's life while in captivity (except maybe that 1 winter with the infant calf JENNY while they were both at Lewis Circus) Thank you also to Louisiana Purchase for being so smart in matching these 2 and for having such a compassionate sensitive caregiver/handler for Shirley.... ❤🐘🐘

I'm so glad she had such a compassionate caretaker in Mr. Solomon James and that the last of her years were in such a serene place with so many elephant friends. We miss you, Shirley. Rest in Peace.
How many times have I watched this? I don't know. How many more times will I watch it? I don't know. I just know I get teary-eyed every time I do watch it. Especially at 12:20 when they stand there with their trunks wrapped around each other. Oh my....
Brian Newberry Solomon is one of God's human angels on Earth. Thank you Father for giving us Solomon and thank you Solomon for answering God's call. I shed a few tears as Solomon said good bye to his big girl; I could feel his pain. His unselfish love is what being a human being is all about. God bless you Solomon. Shirley was blessed to have you taking care of her, loving her, for over twenty years.
I saw Shirley many times as a child. She was beautiful. I can't remember but I hope I saw Solomon at some point. So glad she reunited with Jenny. They obviously loved each other.
This was so beautiful and moving. Shirley was luck to have Solomon - I'm sure his kindness and spirit transcended the the animal human confines. God Bless Solomon and sweet Shirley... nay she live the balance of her years very very happy.
the way mr.solomon james lives his life and did his duty towards his beautiful four legged ward, with love, and compassion, should be a lesson to all of us. if only more of us could live our lives with such grace, maybe our wretched world would be a better place. people like solomon james make an agnostic like me to want to believe in god so that i might say, with meaning - god bless you and yours, solomon james, god bless.
Izzi Adler Agreed. Instead of watching TV shows that shows the Kardashians and their new $20,000,000 homes, these are the true heroes. That show faith in humanity, If only they knew how much their money could literally help CHANGE the world.
I hope you come to know God the creator one day. He deliberately made creatures like elephants for us to love, and show love. Animals and nature show us a God who cares, The ones He made is His image, are the worst things He created in my opinion.
here we are in 2021 and I am re watching it ...again...I always cry when I watch it...this is a keeper! such emotional viewing! Heart breaking and heart warming at the same time....so glad they are in such beautiful place...together....xoxox
I'm from Monroe, Louisiana and I remember taking trips to this zoo as a young child, either field trips at school or with family, and it's crazy to think this is the same elephant I saw at the zoo in the 80s as a kid. I remember feeling sorry for her and she is partially the reason why elephants were my favorite animal as a kid. RIP Shirley and Solomon. I read they both recently passed away.
HAPPY 70th BIRTHDAY DEAR, PRECIOUS SHIRLEY!! I truly hope you can be reunited with your angel, Solomon, God bless that wonderful man! I'm so happy that you are spending your final days FREE. and with DIGNITY at the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee, darling Shirley!! You are the Grand Dame at the Sanctuary, and you look so stunning holding your head, ears and trunk high as you amble so carefree among the acres if the sanctuary like a REAL elephant should!! I wish you many, many more glorious days surrounded by those who TRULY love and care about you, sweet Shirley... You bring so much hope for the thousands of other elephants in captivity who are patiently waiting for their day of freedom.... I pray it comes soon for them, too. We need more men like Solomon in this world- if you are out there Solimon, THANK YOU FOR SHARING SHIRLEY WITH US! There will be a very special place in Heaven for you and your precious girl, Shirley.
i think ive watched this 100 times. never gets old for me. i feel so happy and relieved for shirley to reunite with a loved one and be in such a beautiful place. i wish twigy from belgrade could join them.
Thank you, Solomon, for your pure love, care and compassion for dear Shirley. I know it broke your heart to let her go, but you wanted the best life for her, too. You will remain in Shirley's heart forever.
When Solomon said "I don't know who the first person was to put chains on her but I am happy I will be the last person to take them off" I almost lost it...what a gentle soul. And who am I kidding, the tears started one minute in,,,,
I love it, Solomon is trying to make her move up with dangling a carrot in front of her and she isn't budging but yet he's such a "sucker" he gives her a piece of the carrot anyhow.. Shirley knows how to play him.. He's an awesome man..
That is so sad, but what a wonderful end to this tale. It appears to me that they are showing almost human-like emotions, not that I am anthropomorphising them. I was in tears by the time the video finished.
I lost my father this year. It's Christmas time and I am in a slump. All I think about is how to show my family how much I love them. I cry for my father. In this family, we give gifts, rushing around, making the tree look perfect and the whole 9 yards. It's a tradition. This year I am empty and keep blaming myself for not being in the spirit of things like those around me. Then I see this video. It startled me awake. Her pain, her isolation. I am amazed at the way elephants treat each other with such tenderness and love. I am horrified (again) at our lack of understanding of something so important. Animals are so aware of what really matters. More than people are at times. I have fallen into that trap this year. Trying to please everyone and not disappoint is killing me. Even the christmas music I am playing seems suddenly ridiculous. What matters most to me is being of use to animals that ask for nothing but need help. I am taking back that part of me, the part I was so aware of when I was younger. It grounds me. I am doing the right thing, my right thing by helping and being near animals who need a hand up. Thank you Shirley, Solomon and the Elephant Sanctuary for bonking me in the head with this video.
+argofilms , can you tell me if the circus she belonged to was the All American Oldtime Circus out of Arlington, TX? I used to work with this elephant I believe...
+argofilms , thank you for your response. I've already written to them, I'm sure it's her, I mean how many Asian elephants named Shirley could there be, lol...
This was so touching of a story. I feel they are very smart and so happy she got her freedom. Felt sorry for her caring handler. He truly cared for Shirley.
Oh wow! Cried through the whole story..such beautiful beings these elephants. Soloman James a beautiful man with a big heart. So grateful for these beautiful elephants. What an awesome planet God has created for us.
Shirley's story made me cry -- Thank God for all of the loving people that helped her to be safe at the Elephant Sanctuary of Tennessee. Lots of work, but labor of love for Shirley.
This world needs more people like Soloman James!!! The story of Shirley "was" bittersweet. I'm very glad it had a much happier turn for Shirley. What I really want to know now is, how is Soloman??? Where is he, & what is he doing now?? Wherever you are, you darling man, know this, you are loved, and you are always needed. God Bless You, for your kind heart, and your wisdom!!!
What a beautiful story and how heart-wrenching to imagine the many other elephants in captivity who do not get to be saved. Bless Solomon James and the people who run the elephant sanctuaries. Thank you, Argo Films.
This is heart-breaking to watch. But it's good to know that some people really care about animals. Somehow, we have become the masters and abusers of Nature...
I saw this on the Animal Rescue site and although I have seen it many times before I thought I'd watch it again. I never get tired of it after seeing the horrors on Fb, all the elephant carcasses left behind by poachers. Something must be done, and soon. Something serious or there will be no elephants left save the few in zoos and in sanctuary. These magnificent animals deserve more. Time is NOT on our side.
Is it possible to fall a little bit in love with a man just from watching his love and care of an animal? I hope so! cause I am pretty sure I fell in love with Solomon from watching this. His heart is so beautiful! listening to him talk about Shirley, makes me cry every time I watch this....
This is one of the happiest things I've ever seen, and we all need some happiness like this here in 2020. Thank you for loving Shirley, Solomon, and thank you for loving her enough to let her go and be free in this wonderful place. Love to Shirley and all of the other elephants, let's hope one day there are no animals kept captive in this way, and that they will all roam free and safe 💚💚💚
I am so glad Shirley and Jenny have each other now. Elephants are herd animals, and need others. Thank you, Solomon, for you many years of caring for Shirley and I am sorry how hard it was to say goodbye to her.
+vmaewood Sadly, Jenny died back in 2006. I'm not exactly sure where I remembered reading this but it said Mr. Solomon retired. As for Shirley, she now spends her time with the first elephant she saw in the barn after 20 years Tarra. If you go to the Elephant Sanctuary in Tennessee website, you will find a treasure trove of information on Tarra, Shirley, and the other elephants that now reside there; even information on the elephants that have passed on.
+bubblinbrownsugar616, thanks for the update. I had forgotten this story, but it brought me to tears yet again. What amazing animals elephants are. I will check out the sanctuary website. And many thanks again to Mr. Solomon for his fabulous care of Shirley for so long. I hope he was able to visit her again because ... an elephant never forgets ... and Shirley would certainly never forget all the care and love he gave her.
I can't believe it took me this long to see this. Mr. James, thank you for being such a wonderful human. Im pretty sure that I will never forget you or Shirley, this video really made my day and a new found love for you and Shirley.

Beautiful. I love the ending where they are walking and playing together, so much love.
If only more of us could live our lives with such grace, maybe our wretched world would be a better place.
How many times have I watched this? I don't know. How many more times will I watch it? I don't know. I just know I get teary-eyed every time I do watch it. Especially at 12:20 when they stand there with their trunks wrapped around each other. Oh my....
It's beautiful
I cried to see Shirley with Jenny. So many years alone, so much past abuse. Thankfully there are such good people to help these wonderful animals.
God bless Solomon James. :-)
Yes. Thank God she had Solomon.
Love you Shirley and thank you Solomon James for loving her for all those years.
I am also Agnostic, I would like to believe this man is truly a godsend. :)
Izzi Adler Agreed. Instead of watching TV shows that shows the Kardashians and their new $20,000,000 homes, these are the true heroes. That show faith in humanity, If only they knew how much their money could literally help CHANGE the world.
Nusrat5791 I hope Solomon and Shirley have led you to know God.

This film has me crying each time I watch it.
I've seen this many times and I cry everytime I watch it. I am so thankful for the people who take care of these gentle creatures.
Solomon you are an angel , a gift to her life 😇💪🏽
Love prevails . Touching story . Soloman is a kind man
“Free at Last “ god bless his whole life .
Those tears Solomon cries are precious!
Shirley knows she was/is loved.
That means everything!!
When Solomon said "I don't know who the first person was to put chains on her but I am happy I will be the last person to take them off" I almost lost it...what a gentle soul. And who am I kidding, the tears started one minute in,,,,
Your a good man Solomon. You were a friend to her. I’m so glad they found each other after all this time.
Thank you Solomon,I know it hurt you to see her go but good for her, you knew this.you have a true gift
God bless you Solomon!. You have the most beautiful heart. Thank you for taking great care of this beautiful baby.
+Jeanette Donato Thank you for sharing that, Jeanette. Sending you gentle wishes for the holidays. Thank you for caring about the voiceless!
+argofilms , can you tell me if the circus she belonged to was the All American Oldtime Circus out of Arlington, TX? I used to work with this elephant I believe...
+james parsons Sorry, but we're not sure which circus Shirley was with. Perhaps the Elephant Sanctuary would have that info?
+argofilms , thank you for your response. I've already written to them, I'm sure it's her, I mean how many Asian elephants named Shirley could there be, lol...
I believe she was at the Louisiana Purchase Zoo
This was so touching of a story. I feel they are very smart and so happy she got her freedom. Felt sorry for her caring handler. He truly cared for Shirley.
Have you seen Jenny and Shirley embrace and lean into each other, the most beautiful thing. Two old friends remembering and reconnecting.
Oh wow! Cried through the whole story..such beautiful beings these elephants. Soloman James a beautiful man with a big heart. So grateful for these beautiful elephants. What an awesome planet God has created for us.
Thank u for the inspiring story of at least some abused elephant being able to spend their last yrs in peace
Shirley's story made me cry -- Thank God for all of the loving people that helped her to be safe at the Elephant Sanctuary of Tennessee. Lots of work, but labor of love for Shirley.
Ah, Solomon. God is smiling down on you for your loving care of Shirley.
What a beautiful story and such a heartwarming reunion after all those years. Amazing how they remembered each other.💖💖💖
This world needs more people like Soloman James!!!
Man words can't describe the emotions this simple video evokes out of me. It's as close to free therapy as anyone can get
God bless you Solomon James. You are such a wonderful human being! 🙏🏻🦋💕👍🏻🇨🇦
Solomon James is a great human!! Shirley and Solomon blessed each other's lives! I hope he got to reunite with Shirley!!
I can't stop watching this. It's sad and sweet. I'm so glad she ended up at TES with friends. 🐘
Watched this video in 2011, and I cried. Watched this video again in 2020, and I still cried.
One of the most moving videos; I wanted to just hug Solomon and then have the sanctuary give him a job all as I just bawled...
When he said "She's free now." I cried.
So glad she is living a much better life now praise to Solomon for caring for and giving her love, atrention Elephants are not made to live alone
Hats off to Solomon James - You are doing something about it!
This is heart-breaking to watch.
But it's good to know that some people really care about animals.
Somehow, we have become the masters and abusers of Nature...
Just made me cry but I was so happy for Shirley and god bless her keeper for all those yrs.he took care of her .
This is absolutely amazing look how close they are, they really remember and miss each other. How very very special. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
My all respect goes to Mr Solomon and lot's of love for Shirley
God gave us the animals to take care of , Solomon went above and beyond the call , Great job man !!
Daggonnit! This had me crying like a dern baby!
This is the most precious elephant video I have seen. It’s just GOLD.
Amazing, just amazing, you done her proud Solo man James.
What a wonderful man. Once in a while we humans get it right.
👍🐘❤️🐘👍You are one great human being Solomon. The world needs way more Solomon’s, GOD bless you my friend.
I can't believe it took me this long to see this. Mr. James, thank you for being such a wonderful human. Im pretty sure that I will never forget you or Shirley, this video really made my day and a new found love for you and Shirley.
thank you Solomon!!!!
This is a sad video with a happy ending . Blessing and thanks for Salomon and everybody involved in her freedom
What an amazing animal and man. I am happy to see she is living out the rest of her days in freedom.
R.I.P. Shirley. I live near that zoo. Grew up seeing her.
Nice, thank you for sharing. God Bless Solomon and God Bless Shirley and friend.
