    Matt, I love the way you often say that the fly may not be 'show quality' but is fishable and going into your fly box. This attitude motivates me far more than the 'perfectionists' Tyers.

    Fished the Rio Grand from Crede Co to the divide in the late 70’s. This fly was very big in that area. Tied it “nymph “ style-no wing lead wire under body-layed hackle back. Caught 100s fish with it.
    GREAT memories- thanks

    Good Morning Sir Matt, 😊 you never cease to amaze me, all these great looking flies. I'm still doing wooly worms and all different sizes. I love those flies. Well a big PS just a little over two weeks before I'm in Alexandria, I will be there on April 11th. I'll send you an email and let you know my plans. Great job this morning Sir. Many thanks again as always.

    This video had me hunting through my fly pattern books. Here’s what I found: Poul Jorgensen’s “Modern Trout Flies” has both a dry fly and wet fly version. Dick Stewart’s “Universal Fly Tying Guide” has the pattern. Dick Surette’s “Trout and Salmon Fly Index” has a hairwing version. They all look somewhat different.

    I learned to tie very similar fly at a boy scout camp in 1975. We used three peacock herls for the body instead of chenille, and wrapped through the middle of the wing to split it so some went to each side. The instructor yelled at me because I used too much hair for the wing - he wanted it sparse. I've always kept a few in my box. They make a decent mid-summer search pattern for trout, and grayling hit them well throughout summer. I don't remember what name he called it, but Rio Grande King doesn't ring a bell so he probably called it something else.

    Nice fly Matt. I like what Luke Tallant suggested using peacock herl for body maybe a grizzly hackle, but would it be the same fly? I dunno, but who really cares if it catches fish. Keep the good stuff coming buddy.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  ปีที่แล้ว

      You're right Dave! Lots of people have said they tied this fly but with a peacock herl body. I'd say it's the same thing. Maybe with two changes, the body and grizzly hackle, it's probably a different fly. But still, same profile, same action on the water. Probably still a fish catcher. :-)

    Joyce and I have River for the next week. Weather here was 85° and beautiful. Heading to SC with River and hope to fish in the salt creeks, will see how that goes. I get some shots in my knees middle of April. It will last really for about two months. Hopefully maybe I can head your way. You never know but that would be fun and good to see ya. Hope all is going well with the new job. You are always looking good for your videos 👍

    Hi Matt! I watched this a little after you posted it. Then I spent some time searching for different versions of it. I thought Fly Tyer had maybe 2 or 3 anniversary issues, their 40th (?). One featuring famous patterns tied by the originators and submitted to the magazine's first issues. Al Ritt was the author and he tied most of the flies as close as he could to the originals. I seem to remember the Rio Grande King being one of the flies. I think it was tied as a wet and the wing was skunk, and there was a mix up in the articles., it was tied by the wife of a husband wife team. I looked for my issue and searched Fly Tyer website but couldn't find either, just a story about O'Conner by "Bugs" Logan.
    Oh well, I thought maybe you might have come across something about this. Take care.

    Good morning Matt. ☕️time. Enjoyed the video. I like these older flies that are almost forgotten. Seems like there’s lots of them. Between the forgotten, the almost forgotten and the mostly forgotten a person could fill a book or a lot of fly boxes 😀. Did you get out to the Gunpowder? Take care and have a great weekend Matt.

      Absolutely John and I do too! I broke out Schmookler and Sils' "Forgotten Flies" tonight and tied one of Charles De Feo's truly forgotten patterns for Tuesday. An easy one, but a classic looking wet fly. :-)

  • @FlyTyer1948
    @FlyTyer1948 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Interesting & useful choice. No reason this won’t work in the East. It has a good caddis or small stone profile, plus you can play with adjusting colors & material. As several suggested, peacock herl would be a great choice for the body, & brown bucktail or elk under the white calftail wing might appeal to the fish while maintaining visibility for the angler.

    • @SavageFlies
      @SavageFlies  ปีที่แล้ว
