How could Pirates GM Ben Charington see 'clear evidence' of progress in disappointing season?

- On his daily First 10 podcast, Post-Gazette sports columnist Jason Mackey recaps comments Wednesday by Pirates general manager Ben Cherington. Where exactly did Cherington see "clear evidence" of progress after his team matched its 2023 win total, in a disappointment to fans? How could he believe the club is doing "fine" in free agency and trades despite the struggles of players like Rowdy Tellez, Bryan De La Cruz and others? Why did he refuse to commit to bringing Andrew McCutchen back in 2025, despite him being one of the team's most productive offensive players? Did he admit to salary dumping Martin Perez so he could trade for Isiah Kiner-Falefa at the MLB trade deadline? Does he feel the strong rotation of Paul Skenes, Mitch Keller, Jared Jones, Luis Ortiz and Bailey Falter is adequate to compete next season? And why does he feel the team doesn't need a new hitting philosophy after the team finished 23rd in MLB in runs scored? Jason tackles those questions and more.

Thanks for the breakdown Jason. I find his comments puzzling as well
If the Skenes jackpot didn’t hit, the pirates would have at least 10 more losses. That is regression, not improvement.
I saw clear evidence of stupidity on the basepaths, stupidity in the field, stupidity at the plate, stupidity in the front office. Other than that though....
I don’t understand when he said that in the press conference about wins anyone jump up and scream no, you didn’t!!!???
“Going down to the studs and building it back up” will never yield positive results with the current management team, particularly if the payroll continues to be at the very bottom of the league. It’s really sad to watch year after year. Nutting is rich, getting richer, while his team flounders and he shows no apparent concern over sucking one season after the next. He should sell the Pirates and use the proceeds to invest in the vacuum cleaner business, where sucking the most is valued and rewarded.
He doesn’t. He’s just trying to keep his job. He and Shelton have probably gaslit Nutting (which isn’t all that difficult) into thinking they’re “close”, and with “less injuries and some more luck, they’ll make playoffs.”
Ben needs to go!!!
FIRE SHELTON ALREADY
Lipstick on a pig. Rearranging deck chairs on the Titanic. Etc ...
HOW About Buck Showalter!!!🙏😎
Pirates will never change once ppl accept that you will be better off
GM always talks in corporate speak, like he's in a board meeting!
Nuttin will change with Nuttin at the wheel.
They have incompetence from top to bottom in this organization and none of them have any clue on how to win.
This is a double A coaching staff at best and single A management
You forgot about Johan Oviedo
When you're given no resources, progress is hard to come by and very small.
I agree. Huntington and Hurdle won in spite of Nutting, not because of him.
PLEASE GET A NEW OWNER PLEASE PLEASE 🙏😎
So should I pull for another team since this one is never gonna go anywhere
In 2025, Cherington and Shelton will be the most "on the hot seat" GM and manager in professional sports
Gaslighting.....Get (or develop) a late inning reliever and two more HITTERS who play 2B, CF, or 1B. Stop talking about the players that are here "stepping up". Gaslighter!
You’d think that after the pitch to contact approach under Ray Searage that didn’t work they’d understand it’s not wise to have a one size fits all approach to hitting. Cherington is kidding himself if he thinks this team is improving.
Isn't the starting rotation clearly improved? Before the season, most of the fanbase and media were saying that the Pirates didn't do enough to fix the rotation, which was seen as their biggest weakness. It ended up being their biggest strength. They went from a 109 ERA- in 2023, 23rd in baseball, to 94 ERA- in 2024, 8th in MLB. The strong starting pitching also doesn't stop at the major league level. They have interesting and promising pitchers at pretty much every level of the minor leagues. Hitting development obviously needs improvement, but saying that they've had no clear improvement in the organization over the last few years is just wrong.
Wins.
I'm just copying and pasting this in the most recent video for all Pirates youtubers. We need a way to organize to bring attention to the change in ownership that is needed. All the firings mean nothing if Nutting is still at the top. What is the best way to organize online? I personally prefer discord, but not sure how many have the app. Facebook group? Telegram? We need to organize, plan, and see what we can get done. Local sports media is itching to cover fan outrage.
These guys won't make it to the next draft.
So, Ben can almost fully commit to Derek Shelton being here next year, but not Cutch? Got it. 😉 👍
We want rid of Shelton, Cherington, and Nutting to get his act together or sell the team. People are pissed.
Might need a pop filter on that mic. Kinda puffing a lot
Did any of those writers in attendance ask or challenge him directly what he meant by "clear evidence"?
I guess my concern is that if written articles and editorials express such criticism and frustration (which I believe they do), why isn't this frustration and criticism leveled out directly to him at these conferences to put him on the spot since Pirates fans everywhere - even more so right there in Pittsburgh - can get some direct answers they have been long been waiting? Or does he choose not to allow for any back and forth discussion?
They may be in fear of having their press passes revoked. Hell, fans aren't even allowed to voice displeasure with management at games.
The Pirates are the worst organization in professional sports from top to bottom.
By a wide margin too 4 winning seasons in 30 years....how????
So sick of the same song unreal.
They need to resign Tellez and keep this clown show going.
They should be fired...
Quite honestly, it would be better for the Pirates if McCutchen retires. Sorry, but true
Fire all management and let AI run the team. Wait, that how they run it now….”do what the analytics say, and don’t believe your own eyes”
Firing Shelton isn't the answer. The major league team and the minors are out of talent. Shelton is only playing the band hand he was dealt.
Firing Shelton is ONE of the answers, just not the ONLY one. He has ZERO leadership skills, he has a very low baseball IQ, he regularly showcased his atrocious in-game decision-making skills in 2024, and he was directly responsible for several losses due to his extremely poor lineups and his absurd bullpen management. He's NOT an MLB-caliber manager. He also cares as much about winning as a weathered doorknob-- he's not competitive at all. He's just the opposite.
On top of that, he publicly singled out players and blamed them for losses in postgame interviews, and he took no personal responsibility for leaving a pitcher in too long, taking one out of a game too soon, etc. He needs to go ASAP. Anyone who thinks Shelton truly cares about his players or about winning baseball games has somehow (unfortunately) been manipulated into that way of thinking.
Plus, this Pirates team is STILL fundamentally unsound after 5 long years. A new, knowledgeable, and enthusiastic first-year manager could take Shelton's job and do much more with it, and likely with a lower salary. That's a WIN-WIN scenario.
If you want a successful Pirate team make the fines for not using luxury tax money on players 3 times higher than the league money . Nutting will sell the team yeah!
That's along the lines of something a friend was saying. Restructure revenue sharing. The less wins you have, the smaller percentage you receive. Make owners like Nutting prioritize winning. He's only in it for the revenue sharing anyway.
Pirates are trash, would love to watch them but management only wants to save $
He should resign
