How Abiy Ahmed Captured Ethiopia : From Hero to Global Pariah

  • The Ethiopian Prime Minister, Abiy Ahmed Ali, stands out as one of the youngest leaders in East Africa and the entire African continent. He rose to power at the age of 42 in February 2018, following the resignation of his predecessor Prime Minister Hailemarian Desalegn, he quickly exemplified himself as a peacemaker and a collaborative international leader. He ended Ethiopia’s long-running border disputes with Eritrea
Abiy Ahmed's rapprochement with Eritrea earned him the Nobel Peace Prize in 2019, but his aura then seriously faded when he sent the federal army to quell the rebellious authorities of the northern region of Tigray. The war in Tigray, which lasted from November 2020 to November 2022, claimed several hundred thousand lives.
His journey from darling of the international community to condemnation has been swift.

Abiy's policies have been ruinous for Ethiopia. As many problems as Meles' government made for the political sphere, his "developmental state" model did see substantial growth for Ethiopia, as Gerard Prunier has observed. A big part of that was reorienting toward China and India. Abiy's "market-friendly" Western IFI orientation has led Ethiopia to the brink of economic disaster

I have been looking forward to a new episode eagerly and this one was especially good. I was not aware Ahmed was ever internationally respected. For as long as I’ve been aware of Ethiopia its rulers have been notorious for their cruelty. It should be an inspiration to everyone.

This happens over and over again. You hear the US government praise some new African leader as being the ‘fresh new democratic leader’ in Africa. Once it was Yoweri Museveni. Then it was Paul Kagame. For about a month even Laurent Kabila was supposed to be the new African Gorbachev. Then you wait 2 or 3 months and, without fail, the mass graves appear. Except Thomas Sankara. He was the best but still that is usually the rule. A friend of mine from South Sudan was so furious she was actually stomping her foot and yelled ‘No more leaders !! The African people are sick and tired of all these leaders !” and I wonder if the answer is there somewhere. Someone needs to be able to make decisions but does it always have to be one man ? It’s almost hard to blame these men, criminal as they may be. If someone puts you in office with no real checks on your power, how long before you start going crazy and killing people who look at you the wrong way ? Absolute power corrupts absolutely - every single time. Before the colonial powers came, weren’t decisions made communally in Africa ? George Bush proved you can’t export US-style democracy but who would even want that now ? Like Kwame Nkrumah came up with Panafricanism someone needs to come up with a kind of democracy which will work for Africa. But no more leaders. Clearly the African people are sick and tired of these leaders.

@@teddydog6229Although I fully agree with your analysis, bear in mind that Kagame, Museveni, Ahmed etc...all serve western interests. It is in the interest of the North to keep us poor and in permanent conflict, so they can carry on plunder our resources and reduce our population. Most of these leaders are chosen by the North. You talked about South Sudan, Kiir wasn't meant to rule. John Garang was. But he died in a helicopter crash (provided by Museveni). Peace is not an option in South Sudan. The U.S. wants full access to its reources. As long as Kiir keeps war going he is safe. Same applies to Ethiopia, Eritrea etc...all puppets of the North.

No, I think the more of this the better. But seeing a country like Burkina Faso or Zimbabwe reject the USA in exchange for Russia is not exactly an improvement. This may shock you, but leaders are also humans not gods. People tend to be greedy, evil, stupid, and a lot more. When you give so much power at the hand of a single person you should be very cautious as to how they are using it rather than blind hero worshipping and fanboying.

Ethiopia is not a "nation," it's a colonial empire built by Shewan Amhara leadership with French and British guns and military advisers, for the end of extracting the natural resources of non-Amhara lands for Western markets. To say nothing of its legacy of slavery (gabbar/neftegna system). TPLF is not the only group that tried to break away from Ethiopia. Oromo Liberation Front, Ogaden National Liberation Front, Sidama Liberation Front and other secessionist movements have tried, over the decades, to break Ethiopia's stranglehold on their regions. "War is bad" but Abiy Ahmed is a chief warmonger. He has even waged war on Oromos, mass-arresting and drone-striking civilians who protest his regime in Oromia, and antagonizing Somalia, Eritrea, and Djibouti for port access.

And some of these outsiders are so-called Foundational Black Americans. The very same people who messed up Liberia for a century. They now run Friends of the Congo, which ran with fake news about the Congo in the name of Lumumba. It so happens that Lumumba's son supports Tshisekedi. Malema is wrong: a black man can be a foreigner in Africa.
