      I'm trying to decide between these, but I'm baffled as to you preferring the G9 image quality? The Olympus shows deeper colours, black is black, shadows shade, sharper.. the G9 looks equalised... I mean the Olympus well yeah if your face is shaded you need to light it up, like people have been doing since forever in photography or film, it's unnatural that your shaded face is bright.

    If the Olympus has the Panasonic's dynamic range you'd have an almost perfect camera. But you're very good at finding every camera's fatal flaw. Despite the dark shadows, I like the Olympus better overall. But then, I'm a photographer.

    On setting for the G9. There is a newer setting in v2.0 firmware. It is in the setting menu for AE/AF. There is a "near" and "far" option. If set to near it will give priority to the main subject and objects closer to the lens. Almost never goes to the background. Might help with focus hunting of background. Usually works for me.

    I've found the same issue with image quality comparing the EM1mk2 with the G9 in 8-bit, whether 4K or 1080p. The problem is Olympus's standard picture modes are just massively, horribly overcooked. If you dial back the contrast and sharpening settings to minimum it helps a bit, but really, it seems the only way to get nice footage out of the Olympus is to shoot in Log or Flat and grade in post, whereas the G9 produces lovely IQ in Natural straight out of camera.
    Continuous AF on the Olympus is head and shoulders above the G9 though. If only Panasonic would give in and use PDAF like *everyone else*, they would have the perfect hybrid camera.

  • @stephenhowe316
    @stephenhowe316 4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

    If I had to choose, I would prefer the Olympus to the G9 for the better phase-detect af, stability, and natural colour straight out of camera - less grading work in post. The G9 makes you look like a ghost who just had a bath in talcum powder, and it will give you fewer keeper-clips due to focus wobble and warpy-stabe. Olympus 'could' upgrade their codecs with firmware, but the G9 will never get better AF.

    It feels like 4 years ago. Everybody had the GH4 and dreamed about a Panasonic with the stabilization like Olympus. But nobody believed this will be possible because Panasonic was so proud about the lens stabilization. Then the GX85 came out and everything changed, there where rumors about a GH5 with IBIS and about a GH5 with a larger multi aspect sensor. Big time for camera speculations.
    It's like history repeating. This time it's the dream about a Panasonic with AF like Olympus or Sony. I think sooner or later all manufacturers will get IBIS, 10bit or more, 4k and more, reliable AF. So let's hope.

    P.S. A huge wrench in the testing you point out is the camera's LCD display.
    A resolve could be to use and external monitor just to set the exposure and image settings on each, to match them as closely as possible. Then put away the monitor and do the walk about tests.
    Failing access to a portable monitor, matching histograms as close as possible helps.

    For my use, Olympus makes a lot more sense. That's because I already have a GH5 and I want a second camera that has what the GH5 doesn't have: Good AF in video and more portability with good stabilization. In addition, Olympus is a better camera for photos with several innovations. The G9 seems to be a good option for those who want to spend less and want a single camera. I honestly think the Olympus can right all the wrongs you find with image quality, it's just a nightmare to get it right from the menus. The Autofocus of the Panasonic is more capeable than I thought, much more pleaasing than the Olympus hard shifting and quite accurate, but I love the contrast and colors of the Oympus. And the amazing Image stabilazition. It looks like cinema quality to me! Too dark faces in shade situations are a common perception problem when taking pictures or filming. That's why there is so good and cheap accessory to fill in light in the face shadows. Or accept the problem and just crank up the ev to get it to Panasonic level brightness. Both cameras shown in your video have distinct advantages and disadvantages, but I prefer the panasonic, because it seems to do video much better. I actually wish that I could marry the Sony Autofocus to the panasonic. I have given camcorders some consideration but the versatility of the mirrorless keeps drawing me back. I have invested in a smallrig frame and a number of their accessories for my g7 and will outfit whichever camera I purchas in a similar fashion.

    • @dmkays
      @dmkays 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Just as a followup, I did in-fact purchas the G95, and I love that camera. The two reasons I chose it over the G9 are 1. Size and weight, and 2. No recording time limit, save the size of your recording media. This was after carefully weighing the advantages of the G9, including the G9's dual SD card slots, which for others may be a compelling reason to choose that camera. For others who have a frequent need to shoot in low light, a camera with an APS-C or full size camera may be a better choice. But for the type of filming that I do, the G95 and the G9 are both fully adequate, as is in most instances, the G7.

    It is obvious that you don't have that much experience with Olympus menus. Take some time to play with the Olympus video menus to get familiar with them. The learning curve is stepper but it rewards you with more flexibility once you learn your way around. I'm a photographer but own both Panasonic and Olympus bodies and I can get similar exposures from both bodies after adjusting the settings for each mode. I can't suggest video settings for the Oly because I hardly use video (not my thing). Love your videos BTW!

    @minigpracing3068 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    The AF on the Oly is better. The exposure could be from being different lenses, the aperture markings are sometimes rather generalized. Is there a face detect exposure on the Oly? Cycle through the different metering modes and see if you can find one that exposes better.

    Ufff... you got me there. I am ex Olympus user and always thought that Panasonic has better video quality so I picked wrong. To my surprise I did not like Panasonic footage. Sure, you can see too much of the skin texture but somehow it's more pleasing to see more details then less...

    Last couple of things: go into your menu on the em1-3 and in the video menu go to display settings and enable view assist. You'll be able to see your screen better.
    In the video settings go to specification settings and change picture mode to ON and this will let you record video in log/flat profiles and you'll be able to use all the settings in a/s/m. Including being able to change change the sharpness.
    It's a great camera even for videographers, I just wish Olympus made it more user friendly.

    • @cameraconspiracies
      @cameraconspiracies  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The view assist says it won't be accurate to the final recording. And I don't see any way to adjust sharpness in LOG. Once you switch from custom profile to LOG, the settings for sharpness, contrast and saturation disappear from the quick menu.

    • @Lamentor219
      @Lamentor219 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@cameraconspiracies Ah I see you're right. You can only edit sharpness contrast and saturation when picture mode is OFF, which means you can't adjust it with log/flat profiles I guess.
      Also to be honest, with the view assist the only difference I notice is I can actually see the screen with it on lol. Otherwise the final still looks the same with it on.

    Problems with exposure? Oly settings E3 (I think so) +1/2 ev. Done. It is also recommended for photography (portraits). This is not a completely fair comparison. Panasonic lenses look worse on the Olympus, and Olympus lenses look worse on the Panasonic. For example, 17mm 1.2 looks a bit flat on g9, colors are a bit washed out, afc is ok, but on Olympus it is the best lens ever. Skin tones in Olympus looks great. I will add that afc works a bit better with native Olympus lenses (in M1). Interestingly, this applies mainly to video mode, not photo. 25 1.7 works great in photo, but not so good in video, especially compared to oly 25m or 30mm sigma. Olympus lenses also work worse on panasonic in video, but in photo mode they are fine,with som exceptions. It's vary from lens to lens. In general, for more serious work with video g9 is a better choice. Without a doubt. 4k 60fps, 10 bit. What more to say. For daily use m1 miii. The natural profile looks great, afc and ibis are fantastic. For photographers M1 miii. I had g9 and I also tested m1miii. Now I have m1mii and m1x. I don't care much about video.

    AH! Glorious side-by-side comparison! I do need that in my life. I'm watching on a Microboard B400UHD HDX monitor. The Pany-boy looks washed out, flat and pastel colors. The background is over-exposed. I think panasonic sets exposure for the face detection. My Olympus EM10 MK3 did that in "photography" mode. I think the Olympus looks more natural, despite the harsher contrast. But you're filming in direct sunlight with no reflector or lights. What else would we expect as the result? Keep it real, Tony 1.4.
