  • El Centro Medellin Colombia can and is a dangerous place. You have to always be aware of your surroundings. While filming a walk and talk video for you guys, I saw a suspicious character following me. It was obvious he wanted to do something bad. But I outwitted him and got away. Watch the video to see what happened.

      David, is it true that Colombians generally speak pure Spaniard Spanish?

    • @LifewithDavid
      @LifewithDavid  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's not like Spanish from Spain. It's a more understandable Spanish, especially here in Medellin. They speak clearer and not so fast. So this is one of the better places to learn the language in the world because of that reason.

      @@LifewithDavid Ever since I started reading Spanish short stories I developed a habit of writing down words when I have any doubt about the meaning. This has served me well because as soon as you start looking up the words, you start to reduce misunderstanding. Though you really need some example sentences in order to remember the words and be able to use them. In one of the recent videos you asked two ladies what this "public square" was used for and they something like "hacer patrimonio" I did not understand what they meant by that either. When I looked up "patrimonio" it means heritage, but it is used in several ways such as in taxes or sculptures, etc. It always bugs me when I cannot figure out what people meant and I know this is going to drive me cray every time I think of it ;)

      😂 that's exactly why I didn't understand her entirely as well. I wish she would have explained a bit more, like, this is a historic building very important to the city... and a bit more. Love your video's. Feels as though I right there with you in Medellin. About that guy following you, you are probably right about having your camera snatched. I will tell you why. It's because you are walking SLOW and looking distracted talking to the camera. If you notice how people walk, not only in Colombia, but most parts of Central and South America, they walk fast and deliberate. I tried catching up to some nice local girls to chat with them while they walk and forget it. It's like running the mile in under 4 minutes. They are athletic and can negotiate stairs, bridges, and inclines like a dolphin swimming downstream. There is a reason why, they are safer in the streets with that type of walking. Happy touring! Keep up the excellent work!

      You said "but most parts of Central and South America, they walk fast and deliberate. " --- WHAT??? #1 I have heard numerous times Colombians can spot North Americans because we're always walking so damn fast. That alone is a give away. #2 I was pretty paranoid when I first arrived, so to estimate the danger I would creep up behind people, especially women walking alone, walking a little too close behind to see if they're jumpy or would even look. They're not - AT ALL. ~~~ So in conclusion, NO IDEA what country you are making things up about.

    Yes, as someone mentioned below, patrimonio refers to heritage. Those buildings date pretty far back, and as such are historically significant. Before they built Plaza Cisneros or Parque de las Luces, that area was inhabited by squatters, drug dealers and generally speaking was an area that was horrendous and super dangerous. The heritage buildings were also occupied by squatters and reportedly were really trashed out. At least some of those buildings are now part of Medellin's equivalent of the Department of Public Education...anyway, something to do with the education system. On the other side of Parque de las Luces is a large library; one of the ways that Medellin continues to rehabilitate areas of the city and to provide areas for education. On the other side of Avenida San Juan, in front of the Plaza, are the state of Antioquia and the city of Medellín government buildings.

    • @LifewithDavid
      @LifewithDavid  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Thank you for this info, very interesting. Yes, I remember people telling me that this area was super dangerous before. And even after they finish the Parque de las Luces, it still was considered dangerous. Now it has become a lot safer with police presence in the area. But you still need to be vigilant.
      I love that the city puts libraries everywhere, especially in the poorer barrios. This gives kids access to books and other activities. Plus they are actually pretty nice inside.
      There is so much to show about Medellin, I think I could dedicate a whole year making videos and still not scratch the surface. 😀

    Great documentary! I think some of us would be interested to learn about the entire school system in Colombia. Basically, I would like to know the level of schooling of people. Take a region of Medelin, where you are staying for example. I presume that it's similar to what there is in other countries. There is usually a primary school, followed by a secondary school and for some there is post education in a college or university, for those that go that high. Do most people have a secondary school education or do some drop out before the end? The girl workers on the street don't seem to have secondary education. Did they quit school early? How early? How many people have post-secondary (college or university)? Ask politely around? You can answer these questions by interviewing you women, men from the area. Visit and make a video on a local college and/or university. It would be great if you could interview some students or even better a college or university teacher to ask about the education system. Who has post-secondary education? Are there free or paid colleges/universities? It would be great if you can make a video on a popular paid college or university.

    • @LifewithDavid
      @LifewithDavid  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Basically, foreigners like me want to understand the social fabric of Colombia, city by city through their level of education. It's different in each each region of a city. I hope you can talk about the people at the bottom of social scale, like the girls working the street. Have they even attended a school? If yes, how long? Then you move of the social scale. About how many students drop out before end of primary school? secondary school? When I see vidoes of nightlife in Medellin, with beautiful girls walking the sidewalks late at night, I ask myself: What is their level of education? A lot of foreigners like me have that question.

      @@cptechno All cities have free schools and colleges, there are 63 public universities throughout the country, private education is generally better, Colombia is full of mountains and places forgotten by the government where many people do not have the opportunity to study, people who work in the street many have education up to college, but that in this country does not guarantee you get out of poverty.

      You should fit in here just fine then with that hobby! I have been to several cities, but plan to travel all over and make content for you guys. I have been to both Pereira and Bogota. Pereira is a small town and not much to do in my opinion. But the people are super nice and if you like small town life, it is good. The surrounding mountains and nature is super nice. Bogota is the capital and everything you would expect from a capital city, real busy, the people not as friendly (but still friendly, just not as much as in Medellin or Pereira), the weather is cold and rains almost every day. I like Bogota to visit on a long weekend, but I wouldn't live there. Depends on what you like and are looking for in a city.
