Las Vegas Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go to Las Vegas

  • Things YOU need to know before you travel to Las Vegas Nevada. Las Vegas is Big, so is the Strip. Things are much further away than they seem from looking on a map. it will take you at least a 15-30 minute walk to get to a different hotel than your own. The Las Vegas strip is 4 miles. Find the shortcuts between hotels (Bally’s to Paris). Bring Comfortable Footwear. Leave the 4 inch heels at home, or have a second pair. Use the free trams (Luxor to Excalibur) (Monte Carlo to Bellagio). The monorail is pretty convenient too. Don’t try to hail Taxis on the strip, they won’t stop, it’s illegal. Go to a hotel taxi stand to get a taxi, be prepared to wait in line. And traffic at 6pm is awful
✅ Get up to 40% off hotels in Las Vegas by signing up here: plannin.com/en/search?googleR...
    2. Downtown Las Vegas
Is really far. $30 cab ride
But the Freemont Street Experience is cool
And it’s neat to see “old” vegas
People say the best slot machine odds are downtown (worst at the airport)
    3. Hotels
Don’t pick the cheapest hotels… You’ll regret that $25/night rate.
If you want to be in the “middle” stay around Caesars Palace
    Resort fees… ugh!
Many strip hotels are charging for parking, loyalty program might get it for free
If you like “peace and quiet” pick a non-casino hotel. I usually stay at Marriott properties a block or two off the strip, no resort or parking fees.
    4. Gambling
Learn the games, lots of free classes at Casinos
    Join the Player’s Clubs
    Lots of free perks
Front of line, free parking, discounts on shows, food, etc
    5. It’s the desert
Drink plenty of water, it’s dry all the time
Buy the water at a supermarket. Can be $6 a bottle at the casino
In the summer its really hot!
    Wear suncreen
In the winter it can be really cold and windy! Bring a jacket Nov-Feb.
The casinos are always super cold… so bring a light jacket or sweater even in summer
    6. When to go?
When there isn’t a convention in town… check the convention calendars
Mid-week and Christmas is also a slow time
    Vegas doesn’t close… ever it’s 24/7
    7. Food
    Is awesome
Do some research before you go -- there are lots of good restaurants, but they aren’t the obvious ones
For example, Bouchon is hidden up some random elevator in the Venetian
If there’s a famous restaurant somewhere else in the world that you’ve wanted to eat at, it might very well have a location in Vegas
    For Example HofBrauHaus from Munich
    Can be expensive
But can be cheap. You can still find a T-bone steak for $4.95
    Cheapest is usually downtown
    Chinatown has good eats too
    Breakfast is available 24/7
    7.1. Buffets are great,
    But just once a day
Twice a day is overdoing it!
The time at the end of lunch right before dinner is the best deal
IF you time it perfectly with the line
But the lines can be LONG, think hours, 1, 2, 3 hours even.
Eat dinner at 5pm or 8:30pm to avoid the rush.
7.2. You can drink alcohol anywhere
Leaving a hotel? Ask for a to-go cup and drink on the sidewalk
    8. ATMs are super expensive
Standard Vegas ATM fee is like $6
    Bring Cash
Bank ATMS are hard to find
    9. Smoking
    Seems to be allowed everywhere
larger megaresorts have higher ceilings and good filtration systems,
but the smaller, older casinos can get quite smoky.
    10. Tipping
Everybody wants a tip in Vegas
    15-20% for restaurants
Costumed people on the streets want money for photos

As a former Vegas cab driver, I can assure you that you have a 75% chance of being "long hauled," meaning they take you the long way from McCarran airport to your hotel, via 'The Tunnel.' If you are staying on the strip, INSIST on them taking Paradise Road (or Koval) to your destination. Tell them flat out when you get in "No Tunnel." If they take the tunnel anyway, get their cab number, Taxi permit number (on the dash, with photo) and TURN THEM IN to the Taxi Authority. You can even call their bluff when you arrive at the hotel by offering to pay them what the ride 'should have cost,' or they can call a taxi authority officer to dispute the fare. Since this will take at least 45 minutes or more, and expose the driver to a costly citation, the driver will accept your lower payment. Sure, they won't be happy, but hit them where it hurts.

Uber is the way to travel in Vegas. Taxis are a ripoff. They don't mind getting stuck in traffic on your dime. It does not benefit Uber drivers to be in traffic so they always find ways of getting you from A to B quicker. Plus, drivers are often much nicer

John Do it’s not like that so much as you would think. Maybe some people. A small portion. Taxis lost a huge loss to those app companies. So now they want you dollar more. Every time I go I take taxis. I don’t fuck with apps. I’m a New Yorker. I’m not opening an app. Every guy I had took the quickest route, new everything and what was going on. Took our bags and then carried out for us. Wouldn’t take a tip because we were from NY. I obviously gave him anyway. Definitely not like the taxi drivers here in NY. I am sure getting an Uber could possibly be cheaper on some rides. But I took a taxi from MCCaren to MGM...6 bucks. And then a taxi from bellagio to downtown Vegas and it was 13$. Wasnt that expensive. Can’t see Uber being any cheaper than that.

Good tips! As a former Vegas resident who still travels there often, here are some of mine-
    1. Mom & Pop restaurants/local chains offer some unique & tasty fare at cheaper prices. Some of my faves - Pinches Tacos in the Container Park, Skinny/Fats, the legendary Peppermill, Tacos Mexico, VegeNation.
    2. $29 a night rooms or less are perfectly fine if you don't plan on hanging out in your room much. If you just need a place to crash & stash your stuff, they'll do. But know that you are usually getting tired motel room quality. If you want luxe, stick to the big name resorts. If you want quiet, stick to the south end of the Strip or better yet, stay in Henderson, where you'll still be within easy reach - a 15 minute drive or so.
    3. Older hotels/casinos will always be smellier as a consequence of age. If you're sensitive to that, then research your hotels and make sure it was constructed relatively recently.
    4. Cabs gouge you. All of them. I lived without a car in Vegas for 6 months and had to rely on cabs & buses to get around and cabs are pricey and always, always late. Buses are cheap but tend to break down often during the summer months, when the excessive heat gets to them. Rent a car or Uber.
    5. Make a game plan before going to the Strip. Research and make a list of what you want to see. The Strip is loud & chaotic, a frenzy of activity, especially as day becomes night, it is easy to become disoriented. If you map out the places where you want to go ahead of time, you'll save yourself a lot of extra time and confusion.
    6. If you're feeling overcome by all the noise & hoopla, a ride on the High Roller ferris wheel is relaxing & calming with great views. I highly recommend it.
    7. The chilly weather in winter doesn't last long and tends to fluctuate. You still get some balmy days in between the chilly ones. And this is Vegas chilly. Midwesterners and New Englanders balk at Vegas cold. So if you don't mind temps hovering above 32 degrees, December/January is a great time to visit.
    8. If you have a dog to walk or want to decompress, try Charlie Frias park off Tropicana & Decatur. Walking paths, a soccer pitch, even a xeriscaped, rock maze to wander through make this a beautiful spot to take a breath. Also, there's nearby Sunset Park, across from the airport, off Sunset & Eastern, with trails and trees and lakes, it's a favorite place for locals. Then there's my favorite, the Clark County Wetlands park, 3000 acres of wetlands habitat, streams, ponds, rapids and trails that wind all the way to Lake Mead. A hidden gem.
    9. If you're a smoker the price of cigarettes in Vegas may take you aback. I don't smoke anymore, but used to, casually. Vending machines can charge upwards of $9 a pack, though it might be even more now, since I haven't bought a pack in 5 years.
    10. Since the shooting, which locals refer to as "OneOctober," the police presence and security has increased throughout Vegas and in the hotels. I've stayed at 2 different hotels since OneOctober, and each of them had a security guard posted next to the elevators at lobby level. They also had implemented a system whereby when you ride the elevator, you must swipe a room key to get to your floor. If you don't have your room card, the elevator won't move!

I agree with you about Fremont Street in Las Vegas. I was visiting my cousins many years ago and they took me there and it was fabulous. The music was from the 1950's to the 1860's and the people were dancing. To this day I still remember that. I urge all visitors to go there and enjoy themselves. There is one thing that I must mention, do not go before May. I did and I had to carry around a bottle of water during the day, which anyone at any hotel is required to refill.😃😍

Tip for hotels: we decided to stay off strip at the Palms Place which is a boutique hotel connected to Palms. We read that if you ask for an upgrade or offer $20 you are likely to get an upgrade unless they are sold out. We had booked the studio suite for $69/night and I asked at check in if they had any upgrades. At first he said no but then when he checked us in he said, Okay, I have you in a one room suite. Didn't even have to tip. Can't be $69 for a one bedroom modern suite. Now, Palms place could use a little TLC as some of the rooms and halls are a little rough around the edges as they don't cater to high end clientele but it isn't a dump either. but the suite was AMAZING. 1200 sg feet with a jetted tub. Corner suite with windows looking towards the skyline. Modern furniture, marble bathroom. Refrigerator, dishwasher, stove, oven, fireplace, nice couch. HUGE shower. It was really nice, especially for the price. I don't mind staying off the strip as we rent a car as we like to drive to the outlet malls, etc. so it works well for us.

My mom and I would purchase a 24 hour pass late the first day, say around 7 or 8 PM and eat a late dinner. We would then use it for breakfast the next morning even if it was for a lite meal. We would then eat dinner around 6PM which enabled us to each get 3 good meals from the pass.

Forgot to mention that you can use the city bus to travel up and down the strip and into old downtown (freemont st). They charge about $2 a ride or you can get a 24 hour pass for like $8 and use the bus unlimited times and the bus system gets priority in traffic so you get to your destination much faster even with stops in between. I used the bus the first time I visited Vegas and now I use it everytime I go. It's way cheaper than a taxi, lyft, uber etc and you can chat with locals and find out good information ...you will get the occasional wack job on the bus though! Yes, avoid ATM's ...if you need cash then go buy something like a drink at Walgreens (they're EVERYWHERE) and get cash back. Also, you can get free water if your gambling and the waitress comes and asks what you want to drink for free they will give you a small bottled water ....at least I've never been charged as long as I was gambling. Also, if your planning your trip to Vegas and plan on going to attractions you can get big discounts if you pre-buy them online before you go. Also, if your going to be walking alone or down a dark side street that is not populated with pedestrians WATCH YOUR BACK, you might want to take a bottle of Mace with you ....I almost got jumped, robbed twice walking a side street back to my hotel.

A note about buying water: Though buying water from the casinos can be extremely expensive, oftentimes there are people selling water bottles out of ice buckets on the strip for just a dollar. I'm not sure on the legality of this (they may not have permits), but I guess I personally find that casinos charging $6 for water is much more criminal ;)

Stay north in old vegas and catch the metro. It cost like $5 for the whole day and they run pretty lucrative. Also, there is a Wal-Mart there and the bus drops you off right in front. Go on priceline or any other site with packages and diacounts. And fyi, all hotels sometimes charge for parking and all hotels charge for incidentals. They can be $99 or more but most give you your money right back once you leave the hotel. We always stay at The Plaza and take advantage of the buffets especially in north vegas. Have fun

We liked The Plaza downtown Fremont but next week we are trying Tahiti Village south Vegas. If you go on priceline, they can give you the best hotel rates, airfare, car rentals and you can pretty much filter what your looking for at an affordable rate. Also, southwest has awesome 1 way deals for flights. Have fun!

    • @Roberob1189
      @Roberob1189 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

TerrelLism same here! Vegas is my favorite spot on earth. I dreaded leaving and going back home to Long Island. Every time I go I usually stay for 10-12 days and I usually stay 1 or 2 nights in each hotel. MGM, Mirage, Bellagio, Trump, Ceasers. Usually those. I’d love to check out the Wynn or Encore, Venetian or palazzo. I usually go to Atlantic City or Foxwoods/Mohegan a lot more because it’s so close to me. But they don’t compare to Vegas at all. It’s just a feeling you get being there, can’t explain it. Wish it was more closer to me. I always say people are so lucky and blessed to live close by. They don’t realize it most of the time but there are many of us who don’t have things like this close to them. By me I have NYC and it’s not at all what you think, absolutely nothing to do. Just buildings to see. Just that part of the country over there is amazing. You got Seattle not far, portland, LA, Arizona. Etc. all in a days driving distance. My first trip was Seattle for 8 days, and drove to Vegas and spent 5 days. Best 2 weeks of my life.

Another tip for those from the east coast. When he says dry, he means it!!! I was sick n miserable the first 24hrs. Then a dealer said "So what part of the east coast are you from"? I asked how he knew thats where I was from, and he said its written all over you LOL. So from the moment you get off the plane have a water in your hand AND pop a cherry "Halls" cough drop. I HATE "Halls" yet in Vegas I swear it was like an air conditioner kicked in my throat when I took it! I didn't taste anything but cool air.

KLG, I discovered years ago that it also helps if you spend some time at a spa. The desert air really dries you out and a spa is a great way to rehydrate. A lot of the hotels have them (Luxor, Aria, Wynn's, etc.). You don't have to go everyday. Just once during your average 3 day stay is enough.

Yellow Productions yeah I got caught on labor day weekend in bad traffic on an sdx I ended up getting off crossing strip and then using monorail to complete my journey from fashion show to mgm of course sometimes monorail not very handy like cabs etc as they dump u at back of properties and if u want say be on the strip u have to walk for ages thru the properties at least buses stop on the strip.
Every time we go we learn new short cuts etc.

One time my sister and I walked from the Rio all the way to the end of the strip going to the (some coast casino) and back. were both 59 and 61 and not in shape by a long way. We sat to eat after the trip and I had to have help getting out of the booth. I got to the room and just layed down on the bed and that was it until the next morning. so my advise never walk this far when you are not in shape and never walk this far when you have over $5,000. in you pocket. Don't be so cheap take a taxi. I was sore for 3 days.

Just a quick note about the smoking...I work in a large casino on the strip, and a lot of the properties are converting to non-smoking and most of the ones on the strip now have made the hotel towers nonsmoking as well. Some of the race and sports books are even switching, and all restaurants (except gambling bars like PTs or Dotys) forbid smoking inside. There is A LOT less permitted smoking in Vegas than there used to be.
Also, for anyone visiting, venture off the strip! We have a population in Las Vegas of over 2 million people. There’s so much to see outside of the strip! Visit Mount Charleston, especially in winter-there’s a ski hill up there and we get snow up there every winter. It’s less than an hour away. (30-45 minutes sometimes depending on traffic and starting point).
And don’t be afraid to Uber or Lyft! They have pick up areas at most casinos now! The taxi company’s hate it, but it will save money! And yes, the taxi meters in town will run on time, not distance. You will rack up dollars at a long stop light and they will take you the longest, most congested way 95% of the time. Don’t be afraid to ask a casino or hotel employee for the quickest way somewhere before you leave!

      Yeah what’s the trick?

Brett Gulliver The upgrade trick is the $20.00 sandwich trick. You take a 20 dollar bill and fold it up. And you put it between your drivers license and your credit card. And you hand it to the person at the check in desk. Sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t. You can find videos about it on TH-cam.

Don't pay for taxis..Strip to Downtown is $8 for three days on the Deuce bus. If you want to go to a particular hotel and don't want to ride the city bus (which is actually well maintained), use Uber or Lyft.

First: don't go in Summer. We visited LV in August 2017 and it was as hot as 40C (104) at night.

I have just finished Las Vegas in 3 days. I had 2 days all inclusive Go Pass. It includes everything (Vegas the show, bus tour, museum, Eiffel tower, Giant wheel everything..). You pretty much walk around and that 2 days pass includes monorail too. Also, you can always take uber pool... good deal

+Tsas Tsas Nice.. how much was the Go Pass?

    • @tsasa192
      @tsasa192 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Go Pass was $129 total. I stayed in Westgate and it includes 2 free breakfast buffet coupons each day. You can eat there with someone or get one to go. Good hotel and reasonable price. (PS: flight ticket was insanely cheap too). Am I professional or what? :)
