Ah, the good ol' days of amazing socially-aware film and even better socially-aware soundtrack music back when vanilla MTV played music videos. Love the scene with TCJ playing this live. Amazing film, and again, amazing soundtrack.
Back around 1985, two friends of mine who loved this song had gotten kicked out of their parents' houses for smoking weed and various other things. They lived in this dingy apartment in a BAD AREA. Next door was a coffee shop with a big breakfast special for $1.95. One of my friends remarked, "I can always scrape up two bucks!"
Ah ,the golden days. In an not-dissimilar story, my broke-ass hedonistic friend and I, living like kings on nothing and having the absolute time of our lives, were driven more than once in a variety of shiny new limos to Denny's for their back-then $1.95 Grand Slam breakfast which was like ambrosia after three days of no food and sleep, substituting stimulants, alcohol and all-night rock and roll/non-stop romance sessions for the former. Lucky our pal ran an auto detail business and would chauffeur us to Denny's once a week to get some food into us, sipping brandy from crystal glasses during the ride. We had nothing yet we had everything. I'd go back in a second, given the chance. Anyway, yeah: "I can always scrape up two bucks!"
When I look at my bills I’m 175$ in the red when inflation hits just BARELY MOVES I CAN FEEL IT 🫣 On fixed income I eat once a day sometimes 1 once every 2 days. I lived off government TEET SUXS THIS SONG IS RIGHT ON TARGET 🎯
My parents and thus myself were recipients of the Reagan food stores. A block of cheese could be used to help support a car if one had to change a flat tire. And I turned out ok.

Nowadays you can have a halfway decent job, no kids, and still struggle if you live by a large city.

I chuckled at the lyric about those 5-lb blocks of cheese, that you used to get from the Government. I remember those days.
I liked that shit, lol.
