Wild Golden Lion Tamarin Sounds

GLTs are an endangered species, endemic to a small region in the Atlantic Forest outside of Rio De Janeiro. Poaching, the pet trade, and deforestation are the main factors in the decline of the GTL. The black patches you see on them are actually dyed marks for identification as they are closely monitored by Associação Mico-Leão Dourado (AMLD) to prevent poaching. AMLD is a Brazilian non-profit organization that has played a central role in GLT conservation. AMLD collaborates with local farmers to restore crucial GLT habitat through agroforestry and participatory conservation education. The success of ALMD has been a worldwide role model for community based conservation programs. It’s practices and community outreach programs are responsible for increasing the GLT wild population from less than 200 to an estimated 3700 in 2014. Unfortunately yellow fever has broken out among the GLT and reduced their population back down to 2500. AMLD is working to vaccinate the remaining population.
