Great Video! Funny, I came to this same conclusion when my existing valves had been changed many times and there was no more room to cut the pvc manifold as it had every inch filled with slip/slip connectors. I had three brand new valves, so I did the same thing you did in the video. I also attempted to get a diaphragm rebuild kit first, but got the wrong ones. Nothing was bad with the valve bodies. I love this method! And the fact you are using a commercial grade valves....much better! Hey, I have three zones and two work ok, but the third has really low pressure and I cannot figure out why. Two of the three are at a 4 foot elevation above the valves in an upper yard. I have started removing heads to flush them to see if they are clogged, but so far the two of the heads flush clear and water runs slowly out of the body. My next test will be to put a pressure gauge on the hose bib right next to the sprinkler valves, but I suspect since 2 of 3 have pressure it wont be a inlet pressure issue. Why would 2 of 3 heads flow ok and the one not flow well? Thanks for your video, it is a great idea
Many things can cause the issue with low flow. If the other two zones have the same amount of sprinklers and operate great, then first thing I would look for is a cracked pipe. Turn all of the sprinkler heads off on the set with low flow, then turn it on and let it run for a few minutes. Next, walk around and look for a really wet area, there’s your crack. Let me know how it goes.
You were right! Yes it was a cracked pvc pipe. Repairing it was a challenge because the po had a head coming off the main supply and two 3-ways off that section. Any time splicing into a buried section is tight unless I use an expanding repair piece. Maybe a video for the future?
I’ll send you a link to watch a video I made on using the telescoping repair coupling. th-cam.com/video/nf3351WRdGY/w-d-xo.htmlsi=cn1FQr7au69pDKkW Here is the correct link.
Wonderful video! Very helpful, thorough, and useful. You helped two senior citizens (female at that) replace and troubleshoot a valve and save the hassle of explaining the symptoms to an English-speaking-challenged gardener and have to pay for a full valve replacement that wasn't necessary. Just out of curiosity, though, the bleed screw from the old valve blew out and we couldn't thread it back. (...which is why we replaced the top parts of the valve.) It did not appear to be stripped, nor did the threads of where it went. However, it already had teflon plumber's tape on it, which makes us think it had come out before and someone put it back. Two questions: 1. Would a new part from the factory have teflon tape on it already? 2. If a bleeder screw shoots out, can it be put back? It doesn't matter now since we replaced the top parts of the valve as explained in your brilliant video, but we are curious. The new valve's instructions make it a point to emphasize only to turn a bleeder screw one turn, suggesting it shouldn't be turned more or it might come out and not go back. Thanks so much for your video and help.
Hi there I hope I could answer your questions. 1. It does not come with Teflon tape from factory. The reason why they put Teflon tape is at one point the plastic threads were not holding it in place. 2. In my experience these are $25 plastic valves. Absolutely nothing wrong with plastic in fact I like them better than the metal one's.. especially for residential use. But that small knob in particular is very sensitive.... Hope that helps..
Sorry I never saw your comment, sometimes TH-cam screens my comments. As Francisco mentioned the valves don’t come with Teflon tape, they’re easy to cross thread if unscrewed to far. Swapping the valves top definitely fixed the issue.✌️ thx Francisco
Thank you so much! I have the exact valve which just won't stop hissing at us. The valve is leaking. So I was deciding whether to replace the parts here and there, but I decided to do the exact thing you've taught me. Thank you...
Very helpful video, thank you. This method will surely save a lot of work I was getting ready to use your method to repair a valve for one zone (zone #3) that continually leaks from a sprinkler head when the system is off. To find out which valve was for which zone, I manually turned the solenoid on for each of the 3 valves. The problem is, zone #1 now won't turn off. I returned the solenoid back to the off position, but the sprinklers still run for that zone, so I had to turn off the water supply. I removed the solenoid and put it back on, but it still just runs Any ideas as to what the problem could be? Should I just replace that one as well?
Thanks Bud, most likely the O-ring on the solenoid is either torn or stretched some. I would just swap the top on that one too. Be forewarned when turning the water back on sometimes if using a Irritrol (or Lawn Genie) they will pop their diaphragms out if the waters turned on too fast. Not the case with Rainbird. Double check that the manual bleed screw is also closed. Hope you take a minute to Subscribe. 👍
Thank you, very helpful..... 1 question, as my cap reads 075 ASV 3/4, does it matter if new cap off new valve reads 075 DAS 3/4..... the DAS is what I don’t know meaning of..... thank you again for this video!

Gary, thank you for your videos. Some of my front yard sprinklers (6 total on the same zone) don’t pop up at all and the rest pop up a quarter of the way. This happens when the timer activates them. If I turn them on manually, they all work. No apparent cracks or leaks, all of the sprinkler head filters are clean. Should I try to swap the tops out as in this video? Currently have Irritrol 2711 APR. thank you!
Sometimes the solenoid starts going bad. I would swap the top that way you get all new top parts and a new solenoid as well. Hope you remembered to Subscribe to our Channels. ✌️
Replaced all the parts, but same result. I started digging around each sprinkler to see if there was a leak. So far nothing. Can it be a voltage issue? And yes, I subscribed😀.
@@mickeythompson5386 then yes, double check the voltage. You can take a colored station wire from a adjacent valve and connect it to your new valve. (Be sure timer is off position 1st.) then turn on the other valve with timer if that works then you know valves good and the timer or likely the wire is an issue.
Hi Gary. I enjoy watching your videos. Thanks for helping DIYers like me. I have a question. If I have Rainbird valves just like the ones in this video and all my valves are next to my house...if the sprinkler lines run up a hill on my property, when they turn off, should the back flows completely empty out the lines every time? This is happening and I have a huge mold problem inside the house where my valves are. I don't want these valves to empty out every time they turn off. Is this normal? Thanks! Rob
Normal yes, the problem is easily cured by installing a spring loaded check valve on the outgoing pipes. Hope that helps, don’t forget Subscribe to our Channel for more tips and DIY fixes.
I'm trying to figure out the best way to replace this valve...I have the two connections, one is a PVC pipe and the other is just the irrigation type hose that the sprinkler system uses (not PVC). I am having a hell of a time finding an adapter to fit this other line. What do you suggest ? Thanks
been doing the same thing for the large brass valves and they sell the replacement valve without the body...for $75 each...LOL I always change out the solenoid and or diaphram while I'm doing this. No sense in using old parts in your new valve. Also, on these sprinkler systems it doesn't make any difference which way you reattach the wires for the valve, they work either way. This is a great video as it shows the basics of simply replacing parts
Yes, some like the plastic valves too. We don’t see many brass valves anymore here in Cali. To each their own, either way sometimes swapping the tops saves the customer some money and the contractor time. ✌️
Thank you so much for this video. We have rainbird valves too (I didn't even know the name of them prior to this) and this video just saved us a huge headache. My Wife's Uncle is a pro landscaper and has been helping us with fixing up our sprinkler system during the weekends. We recently split a couple of the zones which didn't have high enough pressure (too many sprinklers per zone). I guess that one of the very old valves we have is having trouble handling the increased pressure now and got stuck in an on state (couldn't get it to turn off from the control box). I shut off the water but I couldn't get access to the shut-off valve for just that set of sprinklers (I think it's pretty well buried) so I ended up shutting off the water to the house to get it to stop so we had no water at all. After watching this video I took it apart as you showed. I took a few small rocks out of it and made sure the part that moves on the inside of the screw-on cap was not getting stuck, then put it back together and then it finally shut itself off after it ran for a few seconds when I turned the water back on. I'm leaving the system shut off until the weekend when her Uncle will be back to continue working on this. We'll likely just end up replacing those parts on that one as I don't trust it at this point. Thanks again!
It’s normal for the valve to turn on again when the water is turned back on after a repair, once it reaches 15 psi it then shuts down. Glad to help, don’t forget to Subscribe to our Channel it really helps us too.✌️

MisterWin hi, I use Rainbird valves and warranty them. Use a valve blanket to cover them year round. You won’t be disappointed. Be sure to flush the PVC shavings from all pipes before installing new valves so as not to flush shavings into your new valves. Hope this answered your question. I have a bad leak at the bottom of a rain bird valve on the inlet side. I can’t tell if the threads are cracked but it’s leaking from that area. I’m guessing I’ll have to replace the whole valve. Really useful video though 👍
If the valve is fairly new you can simply remove it using a hacksaw or ratchet cutters. If you use a hacksaw be sure to slightly turn the water back on for a moment to remove the PVC shavings before reinstalling it. I have a video on “How to Replace a Sprinkler Valve” on my Channel. Don’t forget to turn the water main off before removing the valve. The male adapter splitting at the threads is a sign of possible high water pressure.
Gary, I just installed four new RainBird 100AVSF. When I manually turn off one, the anti-siphon bleeds water for about 30 seconds. Is there an adjustment to correct, or is this s defective valve? Thanks
Nope normal, that’s the water returning to the valve from the area you watered. The valve is preventing back flow. Great question, hope you subscribed to bookmark the channel
Yep,,,that was what I did exactly today!! I have the Lawn Genie, and it was 6 screws to remove, and took the whole inner and outer out and replace the brand new one ...no need to cut, glue...!
2 questions. 1. Does the Lawn Genie allow you to switch valves as the Rain Bird does without needing to cut and glue in a new valve? 2. After taking apart the valve and cleaning it out the valve no longer leaks. However when the valve is activated there is some leakage as the sprinkler is working...once the sprinkler turns off there is no leakage. What’s next? Great videos!
Yes you can swap the old parts with new one. The leaking when on might be either a loose breaker lid or the flat washer inside it is worn. Sounds like you’ve handled it for now, if the lid is tight and you tire of it leaking past the flat washer time to swap valve parts. Be sure to Subscribe if you get a chance ✌️
@@garyssprinklerrepair Thanks Gary...I did subscribe yesterday and thanks to you I managed to fix the leak I had. I will see about the flat washer next. Thanks.
i have an abnormal issue with my rainbird valve and hoping it's something easy instead of having to replace the entire valve i open the valve solenoid lever manually, no water i loosen the blowoff valve, water spits out until retightened i loosen the solenoid a lot (unscrewing it), water leaks until retightened pressure valve is almost fully loosened but sprinkler still doesn't turn on could there be a clog or just the valve itself is bad?

@@rawrtravisrawr typically we always replace the valve. The quick fix is to save time and usually does the trick for most homeowners fixes. Is your valve a Rainbird? Have you fixed or had someone else fix a broken lawn pvc pipe on that lawn?
@@garyssprinklerrepair yes its a rainbird :) but we had a sprinkler guy come out maybe about a year ago, not sure what exactly he did but ran us $200 so trying to fix it myself instead of another pricey visit, this valve in question does look newer then the others (new pvc fittings/glue and much cleaner then the other 2 near it) i wasn't home for it but the bill said he found and fixed a broken pipe in the area, unsure if it was part of this one i believe it stopped working recently as i just barely noticed the section of grass dieing in the past few weeks could it be another broken pipe underneath? i hear no water movement through the valve when i turn on the valve versus the other ones

New one doesn't have spring as old one. Don't know if can replace it? Do you think if I can buy a diaphragm of Rain Bird to replace it, can't find Lawn genie's one. Thanks
You could fine a replacement on Amazon, Rainbird wouldn’t carry that. Lawn genie parts are normally exchangeable with irritrol parts. Make sure you’re not exchanging the diaphragm on a valve with no flow control with a diaphragm on a valve with a flow control.
Hello Gary.. I have a question about a problem I have with my sprinkle valves ...if changing the Sprinkle valve Diaphragm can solve the problem with one of my Valve which is liking water from the adjustable flow and bleed valves because I see it is liking water from there. thank you.

My box is full of water and I have two sprinklers that constantly leak water. They are higher than others so installing a check valve wouldn’t work. What do you think would cause this? My backyard is very soggy
If the valves leaking during its operation from the breaker lid, there are a few things it could be. 1. A bad valve letting water flow while off but not enough to seal the plunger on the lid. 2. Loose lid....obviously 3. Too high water pressure forcing the lid away from its flat washer losing the seal. 4. It’s (normal) for water to flow from this lid after shutting off, for a few minutes then eventually stopping. You can purchase lids with mew seals separately. I once experimented by putting 2- flat washer seals where the pressure was too high and it fixed the problem without the need for a pressure regulator.
@@garyssprinklerrepair Thanks for the detailed response Gary, I appreciate it. I have two of these valves along side the house that gets a lot of sun and we live in the desert. They both leak during operation. I was thinking perhaps the intense heat (120F in summer) could warp these lids causing them to permanently leak. What do you think?

I am replacing a lawn genie valve which is very similar, using this same technique of replacing diaphram and gaskets. Now everything shuts off when it should with no leaks or drips but when the valve is open and the drip irrigation is working, the valve is spraying water out from the join between top and bottom parts at the solenoid end. The screws are snug tight and everything seems positioned correctly, so no idea what is going wrong - any ideas? Thanks! P.s. I tried with the new plastic top as well as the old one - no difference P.p.s. if I reduce the water flow by turning the knob, the spray lessens
The solenoid should be tight (snug) when running it with the timer. Sometimes the old rubber O-ring is still inside the solenoid port and needs to be removed prior to installing a new solenoid that already has a O-ring.
@@garyssprinklerrepair thank yiu. Yes tried new solenoid and also old one - no difference. Could it be that the water pressure is too great so it is escaping out if the valve when the diaphragm is open. The less it is open the less water escapes. Thanks for your help
Are you certain your not talking about the flat breaker lid? It will leak when the valve runs if it’s not tight or the plastic pin inside isn’t center correctly in the inside of the lid.
How do I find out if the valve is bad or maybe there is a leak before reaching the sprinkler? Any help? One of my zones isn't working. I replaced the sprinkler no change.
No, I would make sure that the timer isn’t set to come on. Just put it into the off position until you’re done. There’s no electricity there unless the timer comes on.

But that small knob in particular is very
sensitive....
Hope that helps..
@@eiknarfzepol Thank you for your reply. What you said is nice to know.
Sorry I never saw your comment, sometimes TH-cam screens my comments. As Francisco mentioned the valves don’t come with Teflon tape, they’re easy to cross thread if unscrewed to far. Swapping the valves top definitely fixed the issue.✌️ thx Francisco

Very helpful video, thank you. This method will surely save a lot of work
I was getting ready to use your method to repair a valve for one zone (zone #3) that continually leaks from a sprinkler head when the system is off. To find out which valve was for which zone, I manually turned the solenoid on for each of the 3 valves. The problem is, zone #1 now won't turn off. I returned the solenoid back to the off position, but the sprinklers still run for that zone, so I had to turn off the water supply. I removed the solenoid and put it back on, but it still just runs
Any ideas as to what the problem could be?

Currently have Irritrol 2711 APR. thank you!

Replaced all the parts, but same result. I started digging around each sprinkler to see if there was a leak. So far nothing. Can it be a voltage issue? And yes, I subscribed😀.
Did you replace the electrical solenoid as well?
I did. I replaced all of the top parts.

Thanks
Worked great. Just unscrewed solenoid and replaced both tops.

been doing the same thing for the large brass valves and they sell the replacement valve without the body...for $75 each...LOL I always change out the solenoid and or diaphram while I'm doing this. No sense in using old parts in your new valve. Also, on these sprinkler systems it doesn't make any difference which way you reattach the wires for the valve, they work either way. This is a great video as it shows the basics of simply replacing parts
I like plastic Hunter easy simple and cheap..
Not to mention they do the same job as the bronce..

What brand is the best longest lasting valves? I’ve had bad luck with Hunter and Irritrol. How are brass valves? Price doesn’t matter.
MisterWin hi, I use Rainbird valves and warranty them. Use a valve blanket to cover them year round. You won’t be disappointed.

Thanks

Hey anytime my friend that’s what I’m here for. Hope you Subscribe to our Channel when you get a moment.😉
Thanks.
i have an abnormal issue with my rainbird valve and hoping it's something easy instead of having to replace the entire valve
i open the valve solenoid lever manually, no water
i loosen the blowoff valve, water spits out until retightened
i loosen the solenoid a lot (unscrewing it), water leaks until retightened
pressure valve is almost fully loosened
but sprinkler still doesn't turn on
could there be a clog or just the valve itself is bad?

Have you fixed or had someone else fix a broken lawn pvc pipe on that lawn?
@@garyssprinklerrepair yes its a rainbird :) but we had a sprinkler guy come out maybe about a year ago, not sure what exactly he did but ran us $200 so trying to fix it myself instead of another pricey visit, this valve in question does look newer then the others (new pvc fittings/glue and much cleaner then the other 2 near it)
i wasn't home for it but the bill said he found and fixed a broken pipe in the area, unsure if it was part of this one
i believe it stopped working recently as i just barely noticed the section of grass dieing in the past few weeks
could it be another broken pipe underneath? i hear no water movement through the valve when i turn on the valve versus the other ones

The valve will need to be removed and reinstalled using a male adapter with new Teflon tape. (Normally, at least 3 wraps)

@@garyssprinklerrepair sounds good. I’ll give it a try!! Thank you
Can the breaker lid or just the o -ring be purchased separately? I have two valves leaking from this location.
If the valves leaking during its operation from the breaker lid, there are a few things it could be.
1. A bad valve letting water flow while off but not enough to seal the plunger on the lid.
2. Loose lid....obviously

No, I really doubt it at least on Rainbird valves, Irritrol and Hunter maybe but unlikely. It’s 113 here in Cali in the summer too.

What if I replace the whole valve with a 1” instead of the original 3/4? Would it give me any issues?

Only the breaker lid and holes under the valve are different.

If you swapped the tops and no fix, then you’ve got another issue. Broken pipe, or split/restricted drip tube.
Another issue is make sure you turned the water back on after swapping the top.
Lefty Lucy....
Oh my gosh very inspiring content thank you for sharing this sir I really Appreciated new friend from #Commander vlogs
Thanks!
P.s. I tried with the new plastic top as well as the old one - no difference
P.p.s. if I reduce the water flow by turning the knob, the spray lessens
Did you replace the solenoid?
The solenoid should be tight (snug) when running it with the timer. Sometimes the old rubber O-ring is still inside the solenoid port and needs to be removed prior to installing a new solenoid that already has a O-ring.
@@garyssprinklerrepair thank yiu. Yes tried new solenoid and also old one - no difference. Could it be that the water pressure is too great so it is escaping out if the valve when the diaphragm is open. The less it is open the less water escapes.
Thanks for your help
If you remove the “New” solenoid, make sure there isn’t a “rubber O-ring” still visible in the body of the valve.
Are you certain your not talking about the flat breaker lid? It will leak when the valve runs if it’s not tight or the plastic pin inside isn’t center correctly in the inside of the lid.
