One thing most Westerners don't know about Japan's core culture is that being friendly is often considered rude there. (Of course, foreigners are the exception, but Japanese ppl don't or get used to behaving friendly) They value politeness a lot, and foreigners are kind of offended because they are not friendly enough and are so distant. But respecting personal space is very important there since Japan is an island with very little habitat land, so people have been living on top of each other for a long, long time.
I'm Japanese, but I'd like to say that your "Japan" is a figment of your imagination.
In Japan, friendly attitudes from Westerners are welcomed, not seen as rude.
There's nothing more appreciated than a human smile, anywhere in the world.
Also, land shortages are a problem only in some big cities. Elsewhere, there's plenty of land, and it's practically free.
In reality, there is plenty of land in Japan!
I don't know where you're from, but I think you're just buying the classic myths about Japan.

日本人が外国人のフレンドリーな態度をどう受け止めるかではなく、日本人の礼節をわきまえた態度がどう受け止められるか、について話しています。海外の人に対して、こっちが丁寧で礼儀を尽くそうとしているのに、シャイとか冷たいと捉えられてしまう場合が多々あります。それが本当は、日本人なりの礼節だということが伝わりにくい。なぜなら西洋では距離を詰めるフレンドリーが善で、相手のパーソナルスペースを慮って距離を置く日本式礼節にはあまり慣れていないから。日本ではレジの人にタメ口聞かれて、個人的な質問とかされたら、びっくりしますよね。
外国の人が日本人の行動、態度をどう受け取るか、という点において、日本人式礼節に基づいた日本人の行動への誤解が少しでもなくなるといいなと思います。

I'm a Californian living in Japan for a little more than 3 years conducting research. My first 6 months I rented a townhome on that "side street" immediately next to the Katsura river you initially tried walking down in order to get to the Bamboo Forest. I knew there would be tourists to contend with where I chose to live, but I never thought there would be so many during the daytime. Other than that, it was a great place to call home temporarily, especially when getting out in the early morning or evening.
I can't imagine why you didn't extend the rental? 😆

@@OliBarrettTravel It was a beautiful location, except for all the daily swarm of tourists. Besides, I needed to move up to Tokyo for the next 9 months. I just relocated to Osaka for the final 2 years, using it as a base for the lower half of the country.
I forgot to mention two things earlier - I did find the residents of Kyoto to be more "social" than Tokyo, largely due to the small town atmosphere (especially with the small plots of farmland in the city). And secondly, foreigners in Japan are required by law to carry their passports at all times (unless one is soaking in a hot springs where the passport could be kept in a locker), or a resident ID (Zairyu) card for long term visas. Visitors may be stopped at any time for an ID check by the police (which does occur as a means of finding illegal immigrants or those who have over-stayed their visas).

外国人観光客全員に言えるのですが店に入り、無断で撮影し独り言を喋りながら買わないのに商品を手に取っては戻しの行為を繰り返しする事は日本ではNGです。観光客で言葉が通じないので店員は何も言えないだけなのです。もちろんコンビニでもです。その事は知っておいて欲しいです。

You need serious skill to live in Kyoto area. People there live in community more than 500 years together and not welcoming outsider that is how they inherited the tradition and culture. They never talk to you honestly, and very picky and not nice to you.
