Yes, I agree. I’m also Japanese (I’m 69 years old) and I’ve lived many places including in the Philippines and the US. Feeling fitting in is very personal and I know many non-WASP immigrant friends and acquaintances don’t feel accepted here in the US. Therefore, it’s not so specific to one country. It is just so easy to ignore that type of feeling when you are in a country like the Philippines as they are more westernized due to its sad history of colonization. Of course, they are more easy going as well. Please try to be open minded as you are. It’s not enough to know a country (even a region) and/or understand its people by just visiting occasionally and observing things. I enjoy your videos as you sound so sincere. We are not as super serious as you think but we cherish sincerity (honesty) and compassion to others. 😊

Be mindful that nobody talks or eat inside the train... if you want to talk please do it in lower voice. It's not rule but a social manner and conduct in the japanese society. Stay safe

That's why each company has a specific fare to keep it cheap. The fare for other sections of Japan over the same distance (40km) is 5 to 7 US dollars.

What I want to tell you (I hope this will help you a little), Japanese don't request perfect understanding or behaviour , just want you to try to understand more deeply without quick judgment and we just want you to enjoy your days in Japan. We Japanese tend to have high pride about our quality and manner so I think we just keen to keep the quality. And want tourists to be satisfied about Japanese trips, so some comments complain about you just come from frustrating that you cannot enjoy fully. If you visit again, I highly recommend that you travel with some Japanese who speak English and have lived in Japan for a long time. They will welcome to explain the background of the culture and manners and show you the local deep spots. Or in London you will be able to find Japan-UK community, so you can enjoy to deep your viewing. We are happy that you enjoy your trip more and more :)

Sometimes you do see people wandering in a shopping center, but no one thinks well of people wandering around in that without intending to buy anything. Do you go into a shopping center without a purpose? If it's really bad, the police will be called. I've never been abroad, but that doesn't matter. It's Japan, so it's the Japanese rules.

Heres an example: I walked into a Rolex store in Roppongi the other day with no intention to buy a watch, I made it clear to the staff that I had no intention of buying a watch. They were happy to showcase me their products and give details about each watch I looked at. I want to re-iterate this happened in Japan. Karaoke is not a common western activity. He mentioned in the video himself that its not a common activity in the United Kingdom. Oli could have had the expectation to see people singing and enjoying themselves when he entered the Karaoke facility. Here's another example: I walked into a Karaoke bar the other day with a friend, even though I only had one glass of beer and had not real intention of drinking. I found much more enjoyment watching the intoxicated salarymen sitting next to me singing their hearts away. It was very entertaining! Thank you for the nice videos, which I have recently enjoyed watching so much. One thing you might not understand very well is how difficult English is for Japanese people. In the café, you suddenly spoke to the guy (or girl?) in English at a rather high speed. He (or she) might have just not caught what you said and therefore said "no" to you due to misunderstanding. Most Japanese people know many simple English words and can read simple English sentences. However, being able to listen to and catch the words and sentences when they are spoken is totally different. The pronunciation of English is completely different from Japanese, and the Japanese language has a very small set of phonemes, whereas English has many. Therefore, listening to and catching English words and sentences is far more difficult than you can imagine. When Japanese people are spoken to in English suddenly, what you say might sound just like the noise of running cars or an air conditioner. This is definitely one reason why most Japanese people often do not want to speak to tourists like you in English. Even when they know what to say, they feel very reluctant because they know they will not understand what you will say back to them.
It is not good manners in Japan, but it is not good manners to touch something you are not buying. Actually I’m not frustrated at all. Japan is very difficult to understand, I love that about it. “Strange” may have a negative connotation when translated. In this way I mean that it’s different, quirky. I don’t mean it as a bad thing whatsoever.
Having lived in Japan for 20 years, it's not difficult at all. I have worked for Japanese and foreign companies, and much prefer foreign companies. But as a foreigner, if you don't look Asian, you get a pass which means you don't have to conform as much as a local.

However your view is interesting that never been Japan before. That sushi place, the place is by color of plates and how many you had them. if you want more special, you can order to chef directly. and you don't know the name of red meat fish is roasted outside Bonito (family of tune), I think. and after order beer is Yellow tail. You should try more different fish that you can't try in the western countries. Because they had many variety of good fresh fish!! And Your friend has very intellectual vision for different culture. It's best to refrain from eating on the train. Also, try to keep your voice as low as possible when talking. Many Japanese people consider talking on the train to be bad manners.

Hahaha…my dad and I were so exhausted trying to get back to our hotel, we just got on whatever train we could get on quick. After a few stops, I began to realize that my dad and I were the only men in the car. Then I realized it was the women-only car! When I realized this, I just kinda kept my head down in anxiety as we still have several stops to go. 電車で話してはいけない等というマナーはありません。コロナで感染対策として数年行われていたことがそのまま続いているだけで、今や意味はありません。それまでずっと車内での会話はしていたことですし、問題も無かったことです。

ゴミ箱あった時の方がゴミ箱からゴミがあふれて汚かったので。ゴミ箱無くなったら街が綺麗になった。
そのコンビニで買っていないゴミをコンビニで捨てる場合は、大量のゴミは捨てないでください。マナー違反です。
ゴミ箱は前はあったのですが、テロ対策で撤去されてしまった。
あった方が便利ですよね。駅には必ずありますよ。駅で捨てましょう。
最後の会話とても興味深いものでした。日本人の特性なのかもしれません。外国の方が単に批判するのではなく、深層心理を理解しようとしていることが嬉しいです

１つだけ気になる事が有ります。明らかに購入する気が無い食品をたとえケースに入っていたとしても、手にとったり触ったりしない様にしたほうが良いと思います。これは日本のほとんどの人々が守っているマナーです。本当に購入したい人のために思いやりを持って頂けたらと思います。

例えばスーパーで前列に並んでいる品物を避けて購入する人が多いのは何故か考えたところ、やはり前列の品物は色々な人が手にとって触っているかもしれないから避けていると言うのも１つ有ると思います。手袋をしていなければケースに指紋がつきます。また、その手は何時洗ったのかもわかりません。それが嫌だなと感じる人も多いので買う気がないなら触らないに越したことは有りません。購入したい人への思いやりなので、ルールでもなんでもありません。でもそれを映像で見てしまうと、楽しい動画をあげてるいても不快に感じる人がいるかもわからないので、そうなると良い動画も悪く感じたりするかも思いコメントしただけです。別に強制とかルール云々の話ではないです。

They were happy to showcase me their products and give details about each watch I looked at. I want to re-iterate this happened in Japan.
Karaoke is not a common western activity. He mentioned in the video himself that its not a common activity in the United Kingdom. Oli could have had the expectation to see people singing and enjoying themselves when he entered the Karaoke facility. Here's another example: I walked into a Karaoke bar the other day with a friend, even though I only had one glass of beer and had not real intention of drinking. I found much more enjoyment watching the intoxicated salarymen sitting next to me singing their hearts away. It was very entertaining! If my friend was not there, I would've gladly paid the hourly fee to chat with them.

One thing you might not understand very well is how difficult English is for Japanese people. In the café, you suddenly spoke to the guy (or girl?) in English at a rather high speed. He (or she) might have just not caught what you said and therefore said "no" to you due to misunderstanding.
Most Japanese people know many simple English words and can read simple English sentences. However, being able to listen to and catch the words and sentences when they are spoken is totally different. The pronunciation of English is completely different from Japanese, and the Japanese language has a very small set of phonemes, whereas English has many. Therefore, listening to and catching English words and sentences is far more difficult than you can imagine.
When Japanese people are spoken to in English suddenly, what you say might sound just like the noise of running cars or an air conditioner.
This is definitely one reason why most Japanese people often do not want to speak to tourists like you in English. Even when they know what to say, they feel very reluctant because they know they will not understand what you will say back to them.

31:54 its not usually squid... 99% of the time its actually octopus. "Tako" means octopus in Japanese. If you like shrimp, a common alternative is ebiyaki which is the same thing but with shrimp. If you look you should be able to find Yaki balls with just scallions at most stands too.
