I raced the TZ 750 in 1976-1980 AMA on Daytona, etc. My dad was my mechanic... most importantly, we still have the bike, a spare engine & frame...

I watched Kenny Roberts ( pole starting position) pull off to the side at (Sears Point) now Infineon Raceway...let first wave of 40...then 2nd wave of 40....then take off doing a wheely and waving to crowd...on lap #2 crossing the start/ finish line in lead... passing 79 riders under the 2 lap start of race. Amazing rider on an amazing bike....he rode a flat track version of this bike to win Indianapolis Mile...his words at the finish line interview was...They don't pay me enough to ride this thing....

@@colderwar Yes, it was essentially a toned down version of the 1973 Yamaha RD350B. Had drum brakes and later models had port restrictions for better fuel efficiency.

I agree. Other big bore 2 strokss are common enough but anytime you need an adrenaline rush, I'd imagine the 750 does the trick.

Here is a scary fact. The 1979 TZ 250cc had 53bhp and did 140 mph. THIS TZ has THREE times the engine. For comparison, the 1979 Yamaha OW48 was 500cc 2 stroke and made 130bhp and hit 180 mph. I think without a doubt, this 750 could well be in the 200mph club if geared for it.
TZ750 started out making 90hp, and developed into 120hp, factory bikes probably made another 20 or so. Superbikes were out running them by the late 70's early 80's. For their time, they were insane, a modern day 1000cc sportbike off the showroom would out run it.
I raced a TZ750 with TZ250E barrels (vm38 mikuni with powerjets). Top speed and acceleration was about identical as with the 750 barrels but with the 750 barrels the bike was a lot easier to drive due to the membrane intake. The 750 powerband was about 4500-10500 while the 250 barrels only started pulling around 6500/min. The throttle behaved more like a light switch. Lowering the TZ250 ports by about 2mm made the bike a lot more docile without sacrificing to much on the top end. Those 2mm was the main difference between factory and production barrels. Highest speed measured on mine : 346 km/h at Mettet,Belgium

@@johangrundlingh3729 I'm sure that the factory did the same thing with the works 350. Customer cylinders were flawed by the factory on purpose, not so much in top power but more in the usable power range. With tz250 barrels you still wouldn't have the bottom power of a works Yam, because the intake was piston controlled, not membrane. When lowering the cylinders you had to rework the heads as well, otherwise the squish band became so narrow that if a bigend bearing gave way, the piston would damage the head.
Rob Bron, a fellow Dutchman was clocked at Daytona speedway doing around 340 km topspeed. He broke the chain otherwise would have won the race. Those were the days...

Just stunning. Back in the 80s I put a TZ350G on the road in UK, what a weapon that was, even had a kickstart. The smell of Castrol R .... happy days........TZ750 that is the dogs

@@nohaste4me Yea I was an engineer so TZ350 G barrels, heads, pistons, rings, carbs, exhausts, gaskets all for £80 brand new! from a closing down sale in a bike shop. It was obvious, design your own water pump and radiator, take a YR5 engine and graft it all on, make your own mono shock swing arm fit discs, make a car electronic ignition work, buy TZ fiberglass body work from the local race track. Paint it yellow do Kenny Roberts block black stripes and you have yourself a nice little road bike cheaper than an LC350. Did about 4,000 miles on it and sold it at a profit........fun.
2-stroke smell, is something special. I only know it from mopeds and then the east block car named Trabant, that I saw around 1990/91 in the former east Germany.
I remember Kenny Roberts Sr riding a flat track version of that bike, long after he had retired. He said he'd either make it around the first turn or there was going to be a huge HOLE in the wall!
The TZ750 was so dominate that the AMA completely changed the class because they were afraid people would stop watching as you knew a Yamaha TZ750 was going to win. They were just unbeatable.
My little heart was a pumping watching you prep the machine before the start...oohhh the anticipation of hearing a TZ rasp into life!

I used to race a Bakker framed TZ750 in the Netherlands (and some races abroad) in the 80's and 90's. It was quite a handful to manage, especially with the tires in those day's. Nowadays road tires are so much better than the Dunlop/Michelins we used to race on. Tire management was really needed, you could cook off a rear slick in 10 laps and it would just disintegrate and loose pieces of rubber. Unfortunately my bike and all spares and photographs got stolen from storage around 1998. I tracked it down but because these bikes don't come with any papers its impossible to reclaim. Some a$$hole is now using it in demo races in the Netherlands.
You need to hire a Team. Steal it back and neutralize anyone that tries to stop you!!!!

I was lucky enough to see Kenny Roberts ride a few laps on a TZ 750 dirt tracker at the Indy Mile the night before Motogp a few years ago. It wasn't a slow little exhibition lap. He gave it absolute "Full Beans" for about 3 laps. Ill remember that for the rest of my life!
This is the coolest and most bad ass motorcycle I have ever seen. Full stop! It’s sending shivers up my spine just watching.
I know that feeling when you ride a machine as rowdy as that. The endorphin rush is incredible! You know it's a wild ride when the owner of the motorcycle still gets sweaty palms and goosebumps riding it. That's a really special bike you have, Billy. Thanks for showing it to us.
I went to Ascot for the Half mile the year of the Indy mile.
Rick Hocking was on a a TZ-700.
In the main 4-5 riders got past him in turn 1, at the start of the back straight Hocking nailed it and wheelied past all of them, set it down, and led the first lap. 😮
It has my vote for one of the most wicked bikes of all time! It legendary. I watched them raced in the 70's.
Oh wow, that machine filled my dreams back in the day. I don’t think for one second that I have the skills to ride it but just to go down the street and back and be able to say you’ve ridden one. Thanks for this video out a smile on my face almost as big as yours.
Yess!!! What adrenaline dreams are made of!!!! I am so blessed that I actually saw 500CC Grand Prix races at Le Mans and Laguna Seca! At the start of a race it was truly spine tingling! The sound and knowing what it feels like to ride a 2 stroke road bike the exhilarating adrenaline rush when it comes on pipe into the powerband!!! Scary and exiting all at the same time! Lucky Billy! The bsa Yamaha shop I worked for in 1968 campaigned a tz750 and during that time had a chance to take it to the drag strip, with the factory road race gearing it turned in the mid tens, while having to slip the clutch dramatically to get it off the line with a low gear speed of about 70mph.
I'm 68 and I'd love to jump on that marvel of road racing history. My early road racing experience largely consisted of watching and back end of Michael Chang's TZ 750, when I began racing my stock 1981 Honda 750F in the AFM Formula II and Super Street competition. In 1983, AMA superbikes changed from 1000cc to 750cc, which opened up a surplus of in-line 755cc HRC factory support engines, and I was able to buy one of those engines. My engine was brokered thru Gardenia Honda, sold by AMA Pro John Bettencourt.
After we put the HRC engine in my chassis, we made the Willow Springs race in June. The F1 class started ahead of F2, while my front tire insisted on lifting during launch. Entering turn one I move past the other F1 bikes and I'm in a familiar place.. right on Chang's tail. When I roll the throttle off turn one for the first time, the tire lifts and I can feel the hp twisting the chassis, with the tire straining for grip.. I still manage to pull even on Chang entering turn two, who was on the outside, locked on my left foot thru the long sweeper. On exit, I rolled the gas and just rode away from him with the tire in the air, to a very gratifying win. Love your TZ. Thanks for the share...

I got to watch some of the Yamaha two-strokes in the early 80s at Laguna. Roberts! Along with Lawson. Those were some great days.i thin the Yamahas were punched out to about 630cc (?), and they were s much fun to see them coming down 6 and 6A, "The Corkscrew," and getting autographs from Kenny and Peter Egan. Those were great old days.

Billy Is Da Man. I never get tired of seeing that bike, nor do I get tired of seeing Billy ride it! Blows my mind that they were made so long ago, but can still go 180mph. That's damn fast. The fastest I have ever been was 140mph on a bike, on the German Autobahns., In 1995. When people passed me up in cars, and on bikes, that made me look like I was standing still.
You immediately see this bike is seriously fast. Those few longer runs on the street shifting through the short ratio gears this engine picks up very clean....he probably just touched the narrow powerband. We're just blessed with people who run petrol through their veins and get enthusiastic about it. Thanks!
That is a holy grail BEAST!!! I want one, street legal with a modern set of forks and front brakes, modern tires, an Ohlins rear shock. Instant perfection. This thing would slay EVERYTHING on a back road!!.,

yes only 120hp but they would still go 300km/hr = 185mph.

Always loved the tz750 what a sound. This video has made my day. I’m off out on my pikes peak v4 now for a blast . 👍🇬🇧

Rode the original TZ700 at International Raceway Adelaide in the early 70's - and it was like riding in a 'tunnel of speed'.

Now days the little extra thumb clutch lever I wasnt expecting would be a secondary rear brake so the rider can wag his right foot in the breaking zone.
This thing is sweet btw. Would like to practice on it for a month then hit the local mountains.

You can buy new engine components if your pockets are deep enough. Be prepared to spend $25K just on the cases though.
I raced one in 78 for Interstate leathers Northampton England. It was a worn out x Joey Dunlop one. warped crankcases and kept locking the layshaft up thus seizing the bike. Had me off at Donnington park at over 160 mph. It was fast but just a bad one, I lapped Mallory park 1 tenth of a second of Steve Bakers lap record. Unfortunately the sponsor left me to pick up the parts tabs and that was my career over. Love to ride one again. Mine was timed at 192mph. Great vid , Thank you.

It was always a dream of mine to have one of these for my street bike. I was young and naive! I had an H1500 and then gave in and got a 4 stroke. KZ1000! Ya! My last bike was a ZX1400. What a beast! Thanks for firing her up for us! Sounds really good. Runs clean.
Remember back in the 80's, watching Superbike class at Sears Point raceway in Calif. Wes Cooley was in the lead and some guy on a TZ 750 went blowing past his Yoshimura GS1000 in the straights. All the 4stroke 4 cylinders were impressive, but the TZ was the only real standout.

Had a 79 RD 400 with Daytona wheels, I've been at a little peace with having sold it over 20 years ago. Watching this video ripped the band aid off and now I'm probably (definitely) on the hunt for another RD. Your bike sounds incredible, enjoy the ride!

Back in the ‘80s a friend showed me a motorcycle racing movie/documentary that featured Mike Hailwood narrating/riding a lap of the Isle of Man on a TZ750 with a helmet camera. It was AWESOME! So calm and collected, he says stuff like - “Some foggy patches here as we crest this off camber right hander at about 160mph before we downshift, brake….”

The way he says the keeper not the owner exemplifies the feeling and appreciation of having the chance to own a peice of two stroke engineering from this era. Inside the power band there is nothing but exitment and appreciation for the perfection of past master designers.

I love that sound! It still is a pain that I sold my 1986 RG 500 Gamma when starting a family. That smell of two-stroke fuel and blue smoke and the incredible accelleration when you hit the revs!

Remember seeing a drag bike at Santa Pod in England which ran 2 x TZ750 engines. 8 of those pipes cackling was something to behold!
Anyone else notice the "Historic Scenic Area" sign, very fitting at the moment, I had the privilege of riding the Kawasaki 750 H2(?) in early 1970s, that was quite the little thrill back then. This bike is a keeper, it can only skyrocket in value...

I rode a bike in Tulsa owned by Phil and Pat McDonald that owned and ran 3 Yamaha shops and were pro flattrackers and road racers . This was the early 80 's and the engine was an OW 500 factory Yamaha engine in a road race frame . There was a long gradual downhill at their midtown shop and that bike lifted the front wheel with me forward over the tank in every gear...it was WICKED ! Uphill I short shifted her to keep it off the pipe because I didn't want to be the guy who looped out the factory bike . So , I can only imagine what that 750 does . That 750 is a work of art and terror LOL 😂. What a beauty....you're the man brother . PK

I remember test riding one way back with an aluminum Spondon frame. Geeez was that thing EVER fun to ride!.....They pull just as hard in the upper gears as they do in the lower and they do not stop pulling. An absolutely exceptional motorcycle!
The best race bikes in the world. This is from back in the glory days of motorcycle racing. Yamaha built some amazing 2 strokes and this sound reminds me of my high school days and racing days also. They sound like a humble bee and fly like one. "FAST"!!!!!! Thanks for sharing this piece of history

Back in the days I was befriended with a 2stroke tuner that had one of these in a 500cc configuration. Never forget the looks of it as long as I live.
the chock lever is not just for starting. if you race where there are big altitude changes like IOM you use the lever on long overruns to lub the motor. or if it starts to lean out over the mountain
thats backwards, it gets RICHER at high altitude due to less oxygen.
Great! Wonderful bike; I had the possibilty to buy one some years ago, but...I became aware I was too old for such a bike. This one was "updated" to 750cc? Is it legal in USA to ride it on public roads...? 🙂

Thx KC for an informative and entertaining video still remember watching King Kenny pushing the front end while drifting the rear on the infield hairpin at Ontario MS in '73 during the 200 Even Ago packed his up after 5 laps just enough to get his start money. Peewee Gleason laying on the high bank in turn 3 after hitting the wall on His TZ750 for what felt like 10laps before they red flagged it. OMS was a great place to watch em run. Now Fontana is gone as well So Cal just can't keep a decent road race track besides Willow Springs and Chukawala in the boonies sad to say.
I've owned many Kawasaki Mach III H1s, from 1970 to recently (too crippled now to ride), but I love (and miss) that multiple cylinder two-stroke sound! Thanks!

Back in the 70's, I was fortunate enough to have watched 'King' Kenny Roberts (and others) go 10/10ths on those TZ big bores at the old Ontario Motor Speedway and also Riverside Raceway in Southern California. Kenny, especially, could ring every bit of performance out of the TZs. Also, that was the time period that the 2 stroke Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki factories were battling each other and also 4 stroke Harley V-twins.
There is no way to describe here the awesome scream of a factory TZ750 going thru the gears down the front straight of the speedway....except to say there is NOTHING like it with modern bikes.
