The wiring connection process should be clearer. U seemed to have skipped those completely. I supposed the 10-pin plug to the new mirror is from the kit. Was there a 20-pin plug supplied by the kit to connect to the roof function center also, or is there an existing one already there to tap the wirings into? This will have to be explicitly mentioned as I sure hate to go through disassembly to find out if anything is amiss and leave things dangling for fumbling for parts. Please advise.
check your rear view mirror plugs for the actual wires before you purchase the wiring kit, my car actually came with those wires, the mirror install was plug and play
I got all that from factory but no compass for some reason, even the clown nose thing is there. Also has the auto dimming thing, pretty cool feature. Same with my mirrors
Interesting, yeah I think it just depends on if the option was selected or production year. They may have added the compass to this option later on. I believe my side mirrors also have auto dimming
Do I need that whole wiring harness if all I care about is Homelink? One of the e90post threads gave me the impression this was plug and play. I didn't realize I needed another harness until I watched your video.
Not sure how much or how little of the harness you'd need, but I had to buy this for homelink to work, which is pretty much why i got this mirror in the first place. My specific car would not work with homelink without it. Perhaps some cars were prewired from factory, but mine was not. My car is a May 2009 production E92 if that helps you at all
Hi there. I have an E88 (128i covertible.) It sees my mirror may have auto dimming - as I already have a connector to my mirror. I also know my antenna for my FOB is located in the mirror since its different for convertibles. I purchased a mirror - and thought it would be plug and play. However, the mirror does not power up at all. Does anyone have advice on what could be the issue?
I lack any experience with the BMW convertibles so I couldn't tell you unfortunately. Maybe check the BMW forums to see if someone has had the same issue?
@@SamAbraham Hi there. Yes - someone did help. I actually made a mistake. I do not have an auto dimming mirror - but since I have a convertible, the antennae for the FOB is located there. So the power or connector is for the antennae. So i'll need the retrofit kit and will have to plug in additional wires. The wiring diagram for E88 or E93 is of course different. Thanks again for replying. I'll post back if I can get this working.
Sam, I did this very conversion on my 07 E92 ten years ago: thanks for the great video! Could have used it back in the day! We now have a 230i convertible with a base mirror. I was gifted a electrochromatic / homelink / compass mirror from a wrecked 235i which has two additional leads in its connector (4 vs 2), which appear to power the goodies in the new mirror. There isn't a replacement part like the wiring harness shown here that I can find - any thought as to how to power the other two leads? Tap off the rain sensor like one would for a dash cam? I'd like to use the upgraded mirror but the power lines aren't there.... Thanks!
I wish I knew more about F-chassis cars to help you, but I would guess that all F22/3 2 series models have the same harness, but different pinouts in the connectors? May require trying to find a wiring diagram of a car that does have the upgraded mirror. Tapping into the sensor may be a solid option as well if you can't find anything else, but given that the module is right there it would probably be best to get power from there
Thanks for the Video! I recently had to replace my no frills old mirror. The new one has all the bells and whistles. I just ordered the Kit. I will let you know how it turns out.
Well it is done and working. However now I have a air bag code and the dome lights, and the moon roof don't have power. I have an appointment with the Mechanic to fix what ever I messed up.
@@samengelhard9516 That’s quite strange, mind you all it could take is one incorrectly pinned wire to create all those issues. Hope it gets sorted soon
I’m from the uk and would like to do this but I don’t need homelink and I’ve found one without the buttons just the compass, do you need a wiring kit still or was this kit just to get the homelink to work, I have the cic nav also in case that helps 2010 lci touring? Cheers
To be completely honest I don't have a full answer to that, though I believe you may need a different wiring harness. Not one for homelink but to enable the compass at least.
Andrew Wood Like ur auto headlights and interior lights? Sounds weird to me, the only thing I can think is that one of your wires may be touching another, or something like that. I’m sure you’ve already taken a look, but look very closely at your connections and make sure nothings disconnected or shorting out.
Thanks for the quick response. I was lucky enough I didn't have to make any splices so no issues there. It is my headlights. Basically with the mirror connected my headlights are stuck on. With it disconnected they will shut off and turn on automatically (depending on lighting outside).
Andrew Wood Wow Ive never come across that, all I can think is that there is some coding that needs to be done. All of our cars are optioned slightly differently so I suppose one option can change how easy these retrofits are. All I can suggest is looking at forum posts to see if anyone else has run into this issue, as I have no idea myself. Good luck!
I followed your instructions and it works perfectly. Thanks for the video.
Glad I could help!
Thanks for making the video, I'm also doing this upgrade mirror for my car and I just used the link you gave to buy the harness from ecs. Thank you..

Good to know, interesting some must be pre-wired. Maybe a model year thing, not sure

@johndonghia12 You must wire it in. Its not plug and play for E88. There is no other way.

Does the US mirror work on the Euro car?
Don't know, maybe someone else does?

Thanks! Look on ebay or other used parts sites to see if its listed. Not sure if you can really buy this new anymore

Is that a wireless phone charger? If yes, was that also a retrofit?
Sadly no wireless charger
This option was sinds 2006
Yes, this video is if you want to retrofit the option lol, wasn't standard on all cars.
