As an Ethiopian, a sea outlet is a massive issue for us, but we're tired of wars, and most importantly Eritreans are our siblings we don't want to fight
Literally any foreigner would struggle to differentiate between an Ethiopian and Eritrean cultures, because we're basically the same nation, different nationalities
And more than my fear for ourselves, I fear for Eritreans because their leader would conscript all the population, the Eritrean dictator will force his 5 million people to throw themselves into war, which would lead to the greatest humanitarian catastrophe and probably the bloodiest in the 21st century (which means that Ethiopia will break its own record)

@lordjjtheradiant1515 info on youtube was extremely sparse. Whenever I did see something here I watched it, but there wasn't much and it was rarely in depth. I mostly got info from news organizations, I relied on Al Jazeera more than I would've preferred since they are fairly biased, but their bias is pro-qatar so it shouldn't be too important for a conflict that doesn't involve qatar, but they covered it the most so I ended up using them a lot. I eventually started looking into Ethiopian news outlets, although it was hard to find that many that were in English, and as a non-Ethippian I had a hard time identifying all of the biases they probably had. It was easy enough to tell if they were pro TPLF or pro Abiy, but I'm sure there was more nuance I simply didn't notice. I did eventually notice that generally speaking, it was split between Tigrayans, Oromo, and anyone who favored decentralization on one side, and Amhara and anyone who favored centralization on the other side. This even applied to foreigners who focused on Ethiopia a lot. I remember reading papers by a Norweigan guy who clearly preferred decentralization, and despite being Norweigan so theoretically having no horse in the race, because he favored decentralization he portrayed Tograyans and Oromos positively and demonized Amhara.

They have paid dearly to get it back, and even if the 120 million of Ethiopians are soldiers, they might win battles, but they wouldn't win the war. As an Eritrean living in Ethiopia, I must say... what an absolutely spectacular video, hit the nail right on the head on pretty much all the topics, the history is accurate, the motives are accurate, and the sentiments are accurate.
Perhaps, one slight inaccuracy (which is something impossible to perceive without actually being on the ground) may have been the portrayal of the PM as an Ethiopian nationalist... While this is how he portrays himself and while it is what pretty much everybody, including myself, thought him to be in 2018; his actions seem to indicate otherwise, by that I mean: the restructuring of his entire leadership demographics to lean HEAVILY towards the Oromo ethnic group, outside of obvious blunders like appointing the leader of the Amhara region (on paper) to be someone who can barely speak the language, it's quite noticeable across all government offices and public institutions throughout the capital. To make matters worse, this ethnic based redistribution of public positions is inevitably followed by an EXTREMELY evident selective behavior towards the public looking to receive government services with Afan Oromo speakers having clear favor, which honestly is exactly what was happening before when other ethnic groups rose to power, though perhaps not as much in the open. Anyway, this behavior by the PM and his associates has led to the ostracization of his prosperity party, by pretty much all the ethnic regions, including the Oromia region who, rather ironically, sees the PM's actions as not being severe enough...... and I'm now realizing this comment is a lot longer than it ever needed to be.
Anyway, great video, love what you and the guys from Wendover are doing at Nebula. Keep up the good work.

I was stationed in Asmara Eritrea at Kagnew Station (4th USASA Field Station) in 1962-63. One of the most incredible US Army bases. From the only CinimaScope theater to Miniature Golf course in Africa. We (Americans) were treated very well by the Eritreans. The insurgency did not affect the Americans initially, but the U.S. did not support a separate Eritrea and that affected how the insurgency groups started seeing the U.S. as part of the problem preventing Eritrean independence or at least following (mandating) the UN resolution for federation with Ethiopia. One problem not usually mentioned was the initial independence groups were supported by both Russia and China who gave weapons, training and money. Remember the Ethiopian government tried to dismantle the Eritrean language, political system and absorb any thoughts of independence as a people and state. As for a war being inevitable between Eritrea and Ethiopia, I agree that it is a great possibility almost a “Manifest Destiny” for both countries.

Why didn't they fight against their colonizers Italy and England if they saw America as insurgents? Their movement for independence came after Ethiopia became a socialist country, which upset the USA. However, the USA made a big mistake by causing Ethiopia to shift sides during the war with Somalia. The USA held military ammunition that Ethiopia had bought from them, leaving Ethiopia with no choice but to seek aid from Russia. This led to Ethiopia becoming a socialist country at that time, which angered the USA. As a result, the USA and its allies supported rebel groups to fight against the regime, including the Eritrean independence movement. That's why, my friend.

Ethiopia can use Kenyan, Djibouti, Somali, Sudani and Eritrean ports. All these countries have been competing for Ethiopian customers. My grandparents on my mothers side immigrated from Eritrea to Germany as war refugee's in the 70's to escape this conflict. At the time, Germany was still making reparations to improve its international image on the world stage following ww2, so they took in many war refugee families & also many people from Türkiye, etc., as Germany also needed many people to rebuild its economy + infrastructure.. not to mention that Germany was literally still split into two countries; the Allied NATO nations put a lot of pressure on West Germany and its economy to rebuild as quickly as possible, compared to the Soviet controlled East Germany counterpart of the Cold War era. My mother grew up in West Germany & met my father who was an American servicemember stationed in Germany through the Army in the late 90's - early 00's. I just separated from active duty Air Force myself 2 years ago.. just wanted to provide you some context as to how these types of conflicts can deeply impact families. Keep using that TA & try to commission if you can (or GI Bill if you're out already). Good luck & Aim High.

Only then, us 42,000,000 African Americans (and the bright African minds who recently left Africa seeking stability) will return and the rest is history. I don't know if mirroring the governments of Africa with the EU will be a success... all I know is that the borders drawn by foreign nations which were enforced by conquest, colonization, and abduction will not stand the test of time. There's only two directions to go, more separation into smaller countries/regions/states, or the formation of larger nations/empires/kingdoms. Egypt will love this because of the Gerd so will both factions in Sudan. Somalia and Somalis in the Ogaden are waiting for an opportunity to reunite with their kin. All in all Ethiopia is finished if they go through with this. Far too many nations will support Eritrea to win for their own benefit and will consequently fund them. Also major global powers are far too distracted with their own issues to save Ethiopia from collapse. Not to mention the many Ethiopian ethnic groups that want self determination.

Only over our dead bodies. Eritrea is one of the most isolated countries because our government rejects "aid" with ulterior motives. It is the only African country that never played the corrupt geopolitical game, which in Africa's case is 'bribe the politicians and get the resources for cheap'.
Ethiopia is one of the countries that is very notorious for playing this game, as they receive Billions of Aid money, but instead of helping people who are starving, they build 10 Billion dollar presidential palaces and make their politicians rich. If you had watched the video, you would have noticed that. The only reason why Eritrea wasn't independent earlier is because America wanted Ethiopia as their ally against Russia. So they let Ethiopia colonize us and ban our languages.
Eritrean patriotism is real and more genuine than patriotism in most countries, because the people who fought and died for us to be free are alive. We have no one but ourselves to stand with us. No one helped Eritrea to win and become independent. The Western countries ignored our suffering (most ordinary people in the West didn't even know that it was happening) and Russia sponsored Ethiopia after the communists overthrew Haile Selassie. Eritrea only exist because the love of its 9 ethnic groups for one another and their will to fight their enemies together. There are zero tribal conflicts in Eritrea, unlike in Ethiopia where all ethnic groups hate each other enough to kill each other on a regular basis. Yet their governments are always seeking imperialist and colonialist goals instead of caring about their own people. And Eritreans will not let them have their way.

This might have worked out after the nobel peace prize and a decade or two of good or at least non-belligerently grumpy relations (and probably a political change in Eritrea). I think the ship for a peaceful reunification has sailed for a while now.
And even non-peaceful, this land grab is honest but a bad idea on so many levels...

You have it the wrong way round, Go look at an ethnic map of east Africa and you’ll see Ethiopia has far more land than it should anyway. Their biggest state is almost exclusively inhabited by Somalis but they won’t allow them to reunite with their kin. They created some bs artificial triangle border thanks to the British.

    • @Rodrigo_Vega
      @Rodrigo_Vega ปีที่แล้ว +7

Maybe I got my phrasing wrong in a needlessly infamatory way. I agree that no nation of people should be part of a state they.. well, don't want to belong to. But some details in the drawing of certain borders are ridculous. Say Eritreans for real don't want to be merged into Ethiopia for identity, culture, history, pride whatever. That's perfectly fine. But who could tell me they can't possible remit a small strip to either side so that that both countries can have access to the sea? Is every square meter of that land densely inhabited by enthusiastically nationalistic Eritreans? I seriously doubt it. I'm from South America and this happens here too. Bolivia is landlocked and they've been continuously requesting an opening to the sea for more than a century, with both Chile and Peru either oppossing or dragging their feet.
Further south in my own country, Argentina and Chile's southern borders have been drawn just so either country doesn't get access to both the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans. It's moroninc that us empoverished countries are blocking and shafting each other in order to get a cut of taxes from each other's dire needs instead of building each other up into a wealthy region. It's dumb, but it seems every petty kingdom when having the chance to take a few pennies from the unfortunatedly circumstance of their own sister-nation will do it without a second thought. It's dumb, it's evil and it should end. All countries should be arranged to maximize their needs, self-sufficiency and potential.

Ethiopians are not in support of Abiy, and haven't been for a while. Ethiopian and Eritrean people are inseparable. But it would be in Eritrea's own interest to diplomatically sell Assab to Ethiopia, for a price of course. It is cut of from the Eritrean population, and the once lively city is now a ghost town with a dead economy. The Ethiopian government were urged to take it when mapping out borders during Eritrea's independence 30 years ago, and the Ethiopian government of that time (TPLF) declined, probably thinking Tigray would secede and annex eritrea sometime in the future.

    1. Eritrea didn't sever its port from Ethiopia in 1998. It is Ethiopia who sever the use of the Eritrean ports. You can do a simple google search and find out the former prim minister of Ethiopia(late prime minister Meles Zenawi) said using Eritrean ports(Assab and Massawa) will benefit Eritrea more than Ethiopia and Ethiopia stopped using the ports of Eritrea.
    2. @37:41 If Ethiopia try to invade Eritrea or part of Eritrea the world might help or not, but one thing is clear, every Eritrean will fight for its sovereignty even the person like me who despise and oppose the current ruling government in Eritrea. Dictator ruling is one thing but Sovereignty is another.
    3. @43:50 The single road between Asmara or Massawa to Assab is not much used by the Eritrean government, it is just for public services(Which is not much), the government/militaries use the sea to and from Assab, so that road has no consequence on the war whether the road is near or far from the Ethio-Eritrea boarder.
All in all war never been a solution for development or anything, what the current prime minister of Ethiopia saying or doing is wrong, this will lead the entire region to chaos. Everyone should stand against it, and work on diplomacy for better prosperity and development of that region. The resource or geography is not a problem in that region, the problem always has been the leaders with their personal ego and agenda.
The Ethiopians, the Eritreans, the Somalians don't need to go to war to develop and prosper but to work together with respecting each others sovereignty.
