  • In this video, I show my Generator Interlock Kit, and how I connect my DeWalt DXGNR8000 portable generator to my home for emergency backup power purposes. When we have a power outage, I can connected my portable generator to my home for backup power during the outage.
    This shows you how you can power your home on a portable generator!
    Disclaimer: Always use a certified electrician and consult local codes for your area. My setup was installed by a licensed electrician.

    Do you mind sharing what the electrician charged you to install everything? I realIze geography and seasonality may cause that price to fluctuate market to market and yet would love a ballpark.

      I paid closer to $360 for wiring, labor and other materials - I bought the interlock kit separately. It was a friend of a friend deal - I was also quoted closer to $600 for the same work by a local company.

    Nice!! How many hours can this particular model run on full tank?? Thinking about getting this exact model. Thanks

      It’s based on load. I think it’s either 7 or 9 based on a 50% load. That’s by memory, but it is in the specs/manual.

    I'm getting ready to have the exact same thing done by an electrician. Do you mind telling me what you paid? I'm trying to get a general idea of what they should be charging me for something like this.. From what I can tell, other than putting the input box outside, he doesn't have to install any other panels.

      I got a really good deal through a friend of a friend that is an electrician. I also got a handful of quotes elsewhere - but I spent around $400 for parts and labor (I purchased the Interlock kit for around $125, so I was around $525 all in). Going rate is $60/hr where I am plus materials. He did have to move some of my breakers around since the inlet could only be at the top of my breaker box - so take that into account that you need to be able to accommodate the generator's breaker. Most of the quotes I got before the friend of a friend deal, they were suggesting closer to $600-1000 depending on who I talked to.

      It looked like the Interlock kit prices (with the brand I used at least) have gone up to $149 now. There are several brands out there, but the one I used is solid, well built, and well supported. The sticker they send for the box was crinkled in shipping - asked them if I could get a new one. They had in the mail that same day.

    How did you arrive at your choice of generator? Is 8000 continuous watts enough for your whole house, or selected circuits? Which ones? Thank you!

      I got a good deal on the generator, but was aiming for electric start and 8000w
      This will run most of my home, but I wouldn’t run everything with large power demands at the same time.

      @@tsr6 thanks! Im overly concerned with correct watts / watt hours for my fridge and lights. It’s kept me from buying a generator. Advice?

      There are online calculators you can use to estimate what wattage you need. I’d start there and size up to error on the side of caution.

    Question.
    Did you leave the idle control on while running as well, i see you left it off ?

      I do! I turn it off when exercising it though…

    You really need to keep that away from you furnace intake. It will suck the exhaust right into the house.

    • @tsr6

      I keep it 15-20ft away. My cord is 25’ long
      I also point the exhaust away from the house tooX

    Do you have the link for the interlock kit and plug? Thanks

    • @tsr6
      @tsr6  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The plug was bought by my electrician. I used Interlockkit.com for the interlock itself.

    At least show the cord you used, and where you connected it too..

    • @tsr6
      @tsr6  ปีที่แล้ว

      It’s a standard cord going to an inlet box
