  • Melvyn Bragg and guests discuss the life, times and legacy of the great Jewish medieval philsopher, Maimonides. Also known as Rambam, Maimonides was a philosopher, theologian, lawyer and physician whose works are still influential today. Melvyn is joined by Sir Anthony Kenny, philosopher and former Master of Balliol College, Oxford; Anne Hudson, Emeritus Professor of Medieval English at the University of Oxford; and Rob Lutton, Lecturer in Medieval History at the University of Nottingham.

Maimonides said that creations do not have the power to create themselves, they have to have a creator in order to come into being.on that philosophical way of thinking and approach on life and existence,he really opened my mind on how i approach things and view them.I think he is beyond genius.thank you!!

Admittedly, I didn't listen to the entire video, so this may have been explained already...but I'm pretty sure that is a picture of Saladin, not Maimonides.

nonviolence is a jewish philosophy, Shalom, is the most known Hebrew word, because of jews emphasizing Shalom so much, even before we emphasize to other cultures, Hashem, because we do not push our faith, instead we make sure there is peace... SHALOM!

@Omar Ali Well, perhaps we should let Maimonides speak about the issue. Lets read what he has to say about Islam and the treatment of Jews at the hands of Muslims:
_You write that the rebel leader in Yemen decreed compulsory apostasy for the Jews by forcing the Jewish inhabitants of all the places he had subdued to desert the Jewish religion just as the Berbers had compelled them to do in Maghreb (ie: Islamic West). Verily, this news has broken our backs and has astounded and dumbfounded the whole of our community. And rightly so. For these are evil tidings, "and whosoever hearth of them, both his ears tingle" (1 Samuel __3:11__). _*_Indeed our hearts are weakened, our minds confused, and the powers of the body wasted because of the dire misfortunes which brought religious persecutions upon us from the two ends of the world, the East and the West,_*_ "so that the enemies were in the midst of Israel, some on this side and some on that side " (Joshua __8:22__)_
_Remember my co-religionists, that on account of the vast number of our sins, God has hurled us in the midst of this people, the Arabs, who have persecuted us severely, and passed baneful and discriminatory legislation against us, as Scripture has forwarded us, "Our enemies themselves shall judge us' (Deuteronomy 32:31). _*_Never did a nation molest, degrade, debase and hate us as much as they..._*
*_Although we were dishonored by them beyond human endurance,_*_ and had to put with their fabrications, yet we behaved like him who is depicted by the inspired writer, "But I am as a deaf man, I hear not, and I am as a dumb man that openeth not his mouth" (Psalms 38:14). Similarly our sages instructed us to bear the prevarications and preposterousness of Ishmael in silence. They found a cryptic allusion for this attitude in the names of his sons "Mishma, Duma, and Massa" (Genesis 25:14), which was interpreted to mean, "Listen, be silent and endure" (Targum Pseudo-Jonathan, ad locum). We have acquiesced, both old and young, to inure ourselves to humiliation, as Isaiah instructed us "I gave my back to the smiters, and my cheeks to them that plucked off the hair" (50:6)._
_All this notwithstanding, _*_we do not escape this continued maltreatment which well nigh crushes us. No matter how much we suffer and elect to remain at peace with them, they stir up strife and sedition, as David predicted, "I am all peace, but when I speak, they are for war"_* (Psalms 120:7)
      - The Epistle to the Jews of Yemen 1172AD (the Jews of Yemen were going through a crisis as they were being forced to convert to Islam by 'Abd-al-Nabi ibn Mahdi)

@Omar Ali I think what you are failing to comprehend is that just because at one point in time a Muslim group opens their doors to Jews, it doesnt mean that given another point in time that they won't become the victims of persecution and oppression.
Islam has never been friendly towards Jews or Judaism. Muhammad went to war with Jews. If Muslims are at all amiable to Jews it is despite what Islam says and not because of it.

That’s pity Maimanadis and Ibn Arabi did not came earlier to Egypt as Nasir Khusraw did when Ismaili Imams made Qahira the centre of learning by building university of Al Azhar in 10th century. As we now historically Jews Christian Muslims followers of Abrahamic faith were greatly involved in a court and House of Wisdom of Ismaili Imams. They came when Fatimids were without a Ismaili Imam in turmoil. The real Imam escaped to Alamut by Hassan Ibn Sabbah.

I didn't know he was this big. Micah goodman wrote a book on maimonides and also other books in other topics. I bought one of them and i was immediately struck by the quality of his clear but advanced mode of thinking. I have a hunch this is greatly because of his education through maimonides teachings. Also, maimonides influenced aquinas and spinoza

Maimonides children and grandchildren were a massive influence in judaism in Egypt. Avraham Maimuni introduced prayer postures analogous to islam and a mosque-like lay out of synagogues.

second,it was told in relation to the egyptians in particular as there is almost identical qoute "best of the egyptians kill and the best of the snakes break his head".why ?it was said about having mercy towards your enemies (jews having mercy towards certain egyptians).of course its nice to qoute without the context ...

till the white man discovered diamonds in South Africa in 1886, diamonds were available only in India. In 1726 the white man had found some" low quality" diamonds on a Brazilian river bed. The next discovery was in 1906 in Congo. Ancient Indians were masters in diamond cutting and total internal reflection. These skills disappeared during our 800 years of slavery .
