Just found you guys through this video that was being shared by a fellow japan enthusiast on twitter. So glad I did. Can't wait to watch all of your content on Sion Sono and more :)
Hello guys! Thanks for an extra piece of knowledge! Is there any chance that you have listed all the movies you mentioned here and can you send in the comment? I forgot to write down these I still didn't watch 🙈
Wow, I am really really impressed by how well this piece was put together. Thanks for your hard work! As for Reiwa, unfortunately Japan will have a real struggle with so many issues, but the biggest one will be the immigration, I predict. Only one way that they can deal with it is to educate themselves on what accepting the immigration really is. But they have not even realized it. The Japanese films will reflect on so many social changes and their despair that they will experience, like isolation, cultural identity, racism and poverty. Probably the isolation and the related subjects to it will be the biggest theme for them.
Thanks for all of your support over the last few years. This was a huge project for us and we're really happy with how it came out. History and education are so important, and that's ultimately what we want to share with our audience.
From what I can find, Hirohito was 5'5", which puts him just under the average adult Japanese make height. From every other picture I've seen of him, he was actually a pretty diminutive guy (see him next to Douglas MacArthur, for example). I had to look this picture up again to be sure, but my cropping removed the platform on which Hirohito was standing. Compared with the soldiers he's observing, he actually looks really short in the full photo. Here's the original: www.history.navy.mil/our-collections/photography/numerical-list-of-images/nhhc-series/nh-series/208-PU-00001/208-PU-93S-1.html My bad for editing that to make him look like a giant. Haha. That definitely gave me a chuckle.
7:50 Hum... "not from chinese", but japanese writing from so long ago... isn't very much "chinese-like"? For everything I know about japanese story is like the japanese worked hard to build their "civilization and culture" while at the same time worshiping the Chinese. Anyway, wish I had discovered this channel sooner. Looks good.
I think the cinema of Japan has declined over the last decades, it used to be the focal point of Asian cinema but now Korea and China have dominated. Japan releases maybe 1 good movie that’s not a manga/anime live action a year and it’s kinda sad.
Easily the best video on an overview of Japanese cinema in a historical context, deserves way more views.
One of the best videos the team has made!
This is such a good overview.
When people ask me what japanese film is all about, I now have a neat introduction to send to them.
Thanks for that!
Thanks for your continued support!
Keep 👏 it 👏up 👏 cinema 👏 nippon 👏 I 👏 love 👏 you
Nice summary!
This was a nice if general rundown of both the generations of film in japan and the content you've covered. Thanks!
You guys always provide fantastic videos and once again have outdone yourselves. Thank you for putting this together!
