The first boat is Brindabella sailing in the 1998 Sydney Hobart Yacht Race. Great footage from a very brave helicopter pilot and cameraman. The race was hit by a massive storm, with winds peaking at 70 knots, which also dumped snow across south-east Australia in the middle of summer (the Sydney - Hobart starts on December 26 - mid summer in OZ). 5 racing yachts sank and 6 sailors lost their lives.
You can sail on far less than a six figure income. I may not own a Mercedes, I may not have 3 bedrooms to spare, but I did save up €30K for a nice boat. I do not get an amazing huge yacht, but I can sail across the channel just fine.
my first boat was a pretty much destroyed 420. full of holes, no sails, bent boom (no idea how they managed that) and only half a rudder. cost me $150 and a summer's rebuilding, and I won the first race I entered it in. it's still sailing today, 4 years later, despite the best efforts of the san francisco bay weather.
And don't forget Sayonara, Larry Ellison's boat which won the 1998 SYD/HOB race... I continue to dump so much money into my boat, but love every minute of it. It's my hobby, my therapy and my passion. You can't put a price on that.
Gee Hawkeye... Just enjoy it for what it is... An extreme Sport... Yes expensive, but for those of us that can afford it and enjoy it, I think you have overstated the price, as I am able to do this on a six figure income and continue to do so....
So much fun! Ground control to major Tom! Do you copy over? Yes ground control I read you loud and clear, engines at full power! Over, enjoy the ride major Tom, this is ground control standing by on one six....out.
1:13 that is called speed winching, raising or lowering a halyard,(lines attached to the sails). I think I just fell in love with a Green Dragon!!(: Any day of the week I would take a ride on this wild beast!!

I have no income, yet i manage to sail anywhere i want on a 40 year old 30 foot boat, when i need money i just stop and do a few bottom paints, fiberglass repair, or mechanical fixes. all therer is to do it is to JUST DO IT!!! so go have a ball, and i hope to see you soon. S/V Grievous Angel
What a rotten job being a bowman is! Spend most of your time underwater, and have to work hard while you're in it Why they don't wear wetsuits and scuba gear beats me Great video, thanks
The salopettes they wear are essentially the same as a drysuit anyways. Sealed at the ankles, wrists, and neck to prevent water intrusion into your mid and base layers.
Now this is a flush deck! Here in France we love sailing, which is regared as an extreme sport more than a gentleman's sport. All of you noisy stinking motor boats addicts, watch and learn!
Gorgeous boat eh ? I remember racing against her to Ensenada in the early 70s well more like spending a few moments watching her ready for the first start of the A class and then dissappear over the horizon in a flash lol Just a beautiful thing to watch sail : )
the price is life and its worth every moment of it nothing like doing twenty knots + down hill trying to take every thing mother nature throws at you like a nice trough but theres a word to fix that grind
If you can't afford a 30 meter you can do like I did and build a daysailer (lightning) and have a blast. It is not a sissy sport .You have to know what you are doing. And the M.P.G. is unbelievable. LOL
That second boat/crew is great. Anyone know anything about it? If it was just a day sail, not so big a deal. But if that was a big offshore race/trip, nice!
@@385anna I only recently got a iSUP, the fun to cost ratio is outstanding. If its a bit rough i sit on a milk crate and use my canoe paddle, yeah, i get some strange looks from others but who cares:)
brindabella hobart 80 foot ragtime hobart spencer 65 are not money pits get a grip there for people to enjoy not hate try going there first and see if you can comment
Who told you "Think sailing is for sissy's and old folks? Think again" this? Sissies don't run the waves and old folks ( old money) can afford it! Sheesh
#soudsa1... As a matter of fact, I can and do race sailboats, albeit West Coat, Southern California, but at least I have a boat and can afford to dump plenty of cash into it.... I suspect it is you that is the jock / ass sniffer as you so eloquently put it... Considering it's my boat in this channel.... But thanks for your input....
sort of like yourself i imagine... you were not in the race, so does that make you a "sail sniffer" after the fashion of a jock sniffer? good lord mymasquerade relax a bit. The comment Hawkeye made is pretty accurate. It is a very expensive sport without doubt. Although Hawkeye should relax a bit also and understand that the boat owners in this sport can indeed afford to throw away $ 10 million if they so choose, and if it is what they choose then so be it ....it is their money isn't it?
I completely agree. Two distinct types of people, nothing to do w/one another. My Dad would never wave at powerboat douchebags disrupting our afternoons with bad music, bumpy wake and loud, polluting engines, not to mention the types who'd toss everything overboard (esp in the 80s). My Dad was the environmentally conscious guy since I can remember.

so sad about the 5 yachts and 6 sailors... devastating
Great bit of film... Captures the momentum and adrenalin of sailing flat out..

The whole video is great, but the first 52 seconds or so is a phenomenal mix of awesome sailing and a great track.
Love some good and challenging sailing. Makes the world more interesting.😀😀🙃😀🙃😀

Can't be far away from 22 knots over the ground. Impressive.
Сам люблю так летать! На стареньком ремонтированном "Мустанге" в свежак по Днепру идёшь по крайней мере более 30км/ч.
The video may have been sped up but the rush is real. Real men sail, the rest use motors!

Nice. Very nice. Crap on the naysayers - this is an excellent video.

Better than a power shower... 👍🚿🤣🌬️🌊⛵
People that don't do this can't afford to do this... That's what makes it so great... Stick to watching sports on TV...
What brand boat is that and how long??
Why is their mainsail 1/4 of the way down?
Not sped up... Just awesomeness... Enjoy...
