    We teach a similar method, although this is one area I don't use treats (the other area is speaking on command) because the reward is going in/out of the doorway. I do a sit/wait at every single door I come to but first we practice on the inside doors - bathroom, bedroom, working our way up to an outside door. If the butt comes up, the door gets shut and/or hand is removed from the doorknob. Until the dog remains sitting, you can walk through the door, turn back to the dog, giving them their release word. Eventually, because you practice at every single door (both directions - in or out), you don't even have to say sit or wait because they know they have to in order to get the door to open. It's almost like a please or mother may I. This is also really helpful for not breaking start lines for Agility. The paws can't move until you give another command/cue or their release word. At the park or anywhere you're going in the car, I also get them sitting once they're out of the car so you can get your poop bags ready, water, etc before starting the walk.

      I love that you show your informal commands and praises as well. It really shows your bond with every dog that has been on your TH-cam series. We are getting a German Shepherd puppy and are finding these videos most useful! Watching Harley definitely makes us want a GSD even more too.
      Thank you.

    Hi Nate - love the whole series of videos. I’m super clear on the use of continuation markers (“Yes”) and terminal markers (“free”) from your videos - THANK YOU. But when/how should we introduce a release marker like you used here (“break”) - I see you also do this with a tactile touch on the nose/head with you Malinois (Ari?).. any videos or tips on adding the release word or touch.

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey Robert! Thanks for the comment. You can introduce the "break" (release) word the same way you introduced the terminal marker. The only difference is that the release word doesn't always predict a reward like the terminal marker does. Hope this helps. :)

      Nate Schoemer - awesome! Thanks for the reply! And I guess the nose touch can be added right after the release word but before any encouragement or cue to move/break for the sit(or other position)? Keep up the awesome videos 👌🏼

    I did this when I first adopted my dog, and slacked off. I started again yesterday, it took me six tries to get out the door. Today it only took two tries until they both sat there until I stepped out the door. A nano second later they were up and ready to go, but at least they were seated until I was outside. Thank you for your great lessons!

    Hi Nate. The routine looks good. Consistent and the pup
    seemed to get the concept. I was a dog trainer for about 20 years off and on. And I used a completely different method than I've ever seen anybody use on TH-cam. However nowadays with positive reinforcement, clicker training, using treats things have changed a lot. Anyways I just wanted to say as I did in the last comment I left you it gets a little frustrating because I'm trying to learn new techniques even though what I learned was so very successful and I trained my own service dog because I am now disabled however when you use a puppy like you are that pretty much understands very quickly what to do there isn't much to learn. I just wish more TH-camrs that are dog trainers would bring a dog out that was consistently blowing it. That way I could see how they use Corrections how do they use their training when the dog is consistently not following the commands. I hope you can understand what I mean. Anyways thanks for the video and have a great evening

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the comment/question. The puppies that I use in the videos seem to perform it very easily because I first taught the puppy how to learn and how I communicate with them. That's why I first start with teaching the puppy how to learn with engagement/marker training, proactive training, shaping, etc. When I first learned to train dogs I was taught on some of the more old school techniques from the 70's. So I'm sure I'm aware of the methods you used in your 20 years of training. Since your dog training days, the science of dog training hasn't changed, just some of the techniques. Let me know if you have other questions. :)

    Hi Nate, thanks for another great lesson! We worked on this all morning! Our training sessions are going really well, Loki is super responsive and quick to do all the commands and is obsessed with “climb” and “touch”. (He looks like a seal at the aquarium when he’s doing “touch” it’s pretty funny!)
    The problem we’re having right now though is listening to commands when we’re Not in the middle of a training session. If I’m not wearing my treat vest, or actively have food in my hands, he could care less about what we ask him to do, or will do very eventually on his own time schedule. Do you have any tips for this? It’s especially exhausting for “come” because, yeah. No treats and he just ignores us!
    Thanks again!

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  4 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Hey Chloe! Thanks for the question/comment. You can try a few things to fix this. First, work on creating a proactive dog. You can learn more about that in this video link: th-cam.com/video/tEU6gM_sHYI/w-d-xo.html . Next, I would always be sure to follow through with any command given to the dog. If you give your dog a command, you need to make sure they perform the behavior, even if you have to use leash pressure. Since a lot of people don't like to have a leash on their dog 24/7, you can always use a tab. This will give you the ability to easily reinforce commands. Here's a link to one: boldleaddesigns.com/shop/leather-training-tab/ .Once your dog knows that you'll always follow through, then listening to your commands will become second nature. Lastly, start random training session without the training vest. Make your dog believe that training can start at any moment. Hope this helps!

    Hey Nate love all the videos been studying up for the arrival of our pup next week for months and I think your videos are by far the most informative that I’ve found! I see you use “break” a lot when your done training and I’m just wondering if you specifically taught that or you just use it at the end of your training so much that they just end up learning it?

  • @vmahalin08
    @vmahalin08 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Another easy simple useful video. Instead of a separate terminal marker and a release word, can they both be the same? As in just use either break or free from the get go.

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks! You can, but keep in mind that a terminal marker pinpoints a moment in time when the dog is correct. It tells them they did the behavior correctly, they will receive a reward and they are released. The release word is just a release and does not predict a reward. I like to teach both because there are tons of times when you will just want to release your dog, but not reward them. If you use your terminal marker, you must reward. :)

However If we playing In The back yard (no fences) and we are doing good and he’s listening and all then all the sudden something catches his attention and he runs towards it (dosent happen often) is a fix to keep him on a 20’ or so leash and correct him when he does it or do you have a video about it?? Nate what are you using as treats while training?

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      With a puppy or a new dog in training, I will often start with a high-quality dry food during the training process. I also usually give the puppy raw goat milk from answers, to help ensure the dog is getting enough quality nutrition. If I don't have enough time for a training session, then I soak the kibble in water or raw goat milk and stuff it into a kong or raw bone, then freeze it. In addition, I train with freeze-dried dog food, but that can be very pricey. amzn.to/2W88zMf Usually, a high-quality kibble will be okay. I transition them to raw when all the main training is completed and then use the freeze dried dog food while training.

    Thanks for this video, Nate. I have the opposite problem: My dog has developed a habit of refusing to enter the front door, each and every time, after a walk. My usual cue ‘go through’ or ‘okay’ doesn’t work here as she just habitually freezes up at the entrance. Any advice on how to break this habit before it gets any deeper? Thank you!

    HI Nate, I have a GSD puppy that likes to run the fence line with the neighbors dog. I'm wanting to teach the puppy the command "break", to make the puppy stop the action and return to me. When he runs the fence barking, he's like in a red zone and won't listen at all. Any suggestions?? Thanks Randy

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Randy, I would keep it simple and use the come when called command or redirect to another command, such as a place. I would hook a long line on the dog and then when the dog starts the fence fighting, I would give the command and then I would enforce it with the long line. You need to do this a bunch of times, until your dog will come without the help of the leash. I hope that helps and if possible, consider supporting my channel. Thanks! :) www.patreon.com/NateSchoemer

    See, but my dog was perfectly well behaved by the door with a leash on. But without the leash it changed everything. We trained and trained and trained, even sent him to a professional dog behaviorist. He still ran if he was unleashed by an open door. Trying to find something else, some training method without a leash that might work with our new little guy we’re adopting. Because, in my experience, this method only works with that leash…

    • @NateSchoemer
      @NateSchoemer  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Have two leashes on and then take one off and throw it to the ground. He will think that he no longer has a leash on. Once he goes for the door you can correct him. You can also do off-leash remote collar training. :)

      @@NateSchoemer Hoping the new little guy we’re getting isn a runner 😂 But I’m going to train a whole lot with this. We used pincher collars with our big guys, trained by a pro to use it correctly, the e-collar might be better for the little dude if the leash training doesn’t do the trick 🤷🏻‍♀️ We shall see…

      Great question Ellen! In situations like this, you want to set your dog up to fail, so you can show him the correct behavior the moment they make the mistake. For this technique, you're going to want your dog on a harness, because you don't want to hurt your dog. This is what you would do; attach a leash to something in the house that is strong enough to hold the dog, then attach it to the dog's harness. Also, have another leash in your hand and attached to the dog's collar. Now you can open the door and do the routine explained in the video. If you can's stop your dog with the leash in your hand, the one on the harness acts as a backup. Do this, until your dog decides to stop attempting to run out the front door. I hope this helps and thanks again for supporting the channel! :)
