    Good video, but you mean more like 100 degrees Celsius (or 200+ degrees Fahrenheit). I have worked with RAID cards extensively since their first existence in the market, and I have an Adaptec 6gb/s card where the PCB actually melted because I was unaware of how hot it would get and had inadequate cooling (plus their OEM heatsink was vastly inadequate).

    Thx for info. Didn't know that some higher air flow could have been required. I'll have to give it a look. Need to install an HP H220 card into a Dell Optiplex 990 MT hope it will work fine..

    • @TechsavvyProductions
      @TechsavvyProductions  ปีที่แล้ว

      Anything designed for servers that are not passively cooled take advantage of the rate of air flow typical in a server. There are no fan power jacks in most servers I have worked with. Never run a server with the case cover open, that air flow will be disrupted and devices will begin to overheat quickly.

  • @Triple88a
    @Triple88a 3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

    Good video but few issues.
    First, that fan is a puller, not a pusher. You're pulling air through the fan and exhausting out back. No big deal but an important distinction.
    Next, you're ignoring the units. F VS C. The spec sheet for most LSI SAS controllers says up to 130-150F ambient (depending on the model) and 90C on the chip. 90c is 194F.
    Issue 3. Many of these controllers are now 8-10 years.. The paste on them is also 8-10 years old obviously. Paste that old is hard and useless. New thermal compound is a must when you get one of these.

    First off. 120F is 49C and quite cool for computer chips. Secondly, your blower appears to draw air over the card and evacuate it out the back of the chassis, which is fine. Also, you can't measure aluminum with an IR thermometer since aluminum does not radiate IR efficiently. Paint it black.

    Hi, I have just done something very similar to this. The LSI MEGARAID 9260-8I card is cooled by fitting it just above the PSU utilising the PSU fan to remove the heat. Works very well.
    The problem I have is the speed of start-up for my machine, this would not be a problem for a sever as they are mostly left running but for a desktop that's powered on and off throughout the day, well it's annoying.
    I have read that I could disable the raid cards bios to make a faster boot. these are just SAS dives for storage and not bootable so I have read this should be an option. The problem I am having is finding software compatible with windows 10 that will give me the option to disable the raid cards bios?
    Do you know of an solution please? Thank you, John

    • @TechsavvyProductions
      @TechsavvyProductions  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      John, both UEFI and the older BIOS on your motherboard are designed to see "other" ROMs and yield to each adapter ROM so they can initialize the card and you have access to the firmware. I am not aware that you can disable it. That why servers boot soooooo slowly as the each ROM "firmware" for SCSI, RAID, Ethernet controllers, etc... all have their time to initialize during the boot cycle.
      Thanks for watching and sharing!

    • @paps69shed
      @paps69shed 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TechsavvyProductions Thank for the reply. I'm new to this so maybe it's not disabling the bios but more like disabling the raid features on the bios? This would make the card into a basic Host Bus Adapter. I think that is maybe closer to what I have read is possible? This apparently stops the lengthy initialization process, all I need is the SAS drives to show up in windows and the raid options are something that's not needed. Anyhow the software to allow me to do this will not seem to work under windows 10. I'm thinking maybe load an old pc up with a compatible operating system (I think win 8 was the last supported) and try and access the bios that way? Like I say this is all new to me and I'm sure my naivety shows, thanks again for your reply.

    • @TechsavvyProductions

      You do need a SAS controller, Amazon has a good selection, keep in mind cooling for both the controller and the hard drive. SAS HDs run typically at 10K to 15K rpm and run hot. The controller manual will give you cable and connectors you need.

    What are the requirements for the hard drives. Is there a maximum capacity, say 2TB?, Should the drive be formated, will it accept GPT or is that a function of the computerr? Etc I would consider this part of installation. As for cooling, the silicon chips themselves will usualy operate at 100 degC junctions, so it's a question of the thermal resistance from the junctions thru the heat sink to the cooling air. If the mfg specifies 100 degF for the heat sink then that prolly includes some margin but it's not wise to assume that it is a lot. w3

The used one literally was on the verge of starting my workstation on fire. My cpu, raid card, and video card were melting hot. The raid card also locked my computer and I had to disconnect the power and plug it in to start it again. This episode nearly corrupted my hard drive and it took an hour for windows to repair itself. The boot times with these cards is oppressively slow. The brand new raid card did not melt my computer like the defective used one but the card still runs hot. I remembered watching your videos and you using a pci fan. I watched other videos where people put 40mm fans on the fins of the heat sink. Do you recommend a 1 fan, 2, or 3 on a pci card for cooling critically hot raid cards? Also what do you think about putting a 40mm fan on the raid cards? Do you have any suggestions for increasing the air flow in a workstation or pc? Do you have recommendations for the rpm speeds of cooling fans?

      Turn off Windows' "fast boot, also go into BIOS and check to see where in your firmware settings you can enable/disable "suppress boot display" and disable that feature. Some BIOS refer to these settings as "fast boot/slow boot". It allows you to see POST and and slows the booting of the PC but you will see the controller firmware option.

    You do realize 120 degrees F isnt hot right? That's the temperature of kids hot chocolate at Starbucks. You can set your hand on the backplate of a video card at 120F and it just feels warm. I'd be very surprised if a raid controller from LSI couldnt tolerate being "warm."

    • @TechsavvyProductions
      @TechsavvyProductions  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Scott, great point in the video I do have a fan running on the heat sink so the temp is limited to a lower temp, we discovered that running the controller without a fan the card's heat-sink chip overheated quickly. Within ten minutes you can not touch the circuit board opposite the heat sink with your finger. These boards require a certain airflow cu ft/min rate to maintain proper cooling and specify a certain environmental temperature range. Thanks for taking the time to comment.
