    Thank you so much for this, I spent little over $200 doing it myself instead of $700+ from other Mechanic shop, you just save me $500. God bless you and keep up the good work.

    Great video and tutorial. Really made the job easy and saved me a ton of money.
    I would add two points;
    - when you are compressing the cylinders, keep an eye out for excess brake fluid coming out of the main reservoir. It will go back down after you perform the next step,
    - after you put the tires back on the vehicle, start the vehicle and step on the brake pedal a few times. It most likely will go to the floor the first few times. Then test drive the vehicle.
    Best video on this project that I have found. Thanks!

    The brake grease on the hub...SO IMPORTANT. I do a thin layer of anti seize and even on the face of the rotor I do the same so a wheel never sticks. I turn into Bob Ross when I do brakes. I put grease on every single thing. Pretty sure I use too much silicone grease (slider pins especially), but I do not want anybody returning with a complaint. Pads are gauranteed to wear evenly with me 😂😂😂

    1. If you're replacing the pads and not the rotors, you must have the rotors resurfaced. Where you purchased the pads will usually have this service. If the rotors are too thin to resurface, they need to be replaced.
    2. using one of the worn pads with a large C-Clamp is another way of compressing the caliper piston without risking damage to the piston(s).
    ...and ALWAYS, ALWAYS, before you start, make sure the bleeder screws are not frozen up!...just in case.

      @WildWonkyWizard You can sometimes get by by giving the rotor a once-over using sandpaper (60 grit) on both sides. You need to "break up" the rotor surface to prevent the squealing (not grinding) noise, especially if you're installing semi-metallic pads to get the same look as the new ones in this video. But NEVER touch the rotors (or pads surface) after you do this as the dirt and grease on your fingers can affect brake performance. If you do, just spray down with brake cleaner.

  • @timmyv4535

    You should open the bleeder when returning pistons to bottoms. Not from me, from Factory Ford training I had.

    This is a very informative video, making it seem like an easy enough job. I do have a question : I have a 1999 Ranger, and at the part of your video where you clean the hub, there is a half circle of metal to the right that looks like shielding or backing. How integral is that part, and can it be replaced? Mine is half rusting away.

    • @1AAuto
      @1AAuto  6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      +njnaturewolf That is the brake dust shield, and it keeps debris out of your brakes. If it is rusting away then it is a good time to replace it! 1aauto.com

    Great instructional video. I would have cleaned the caliper pistons prior to pushing them back into the caliper. Also, advise to remove a portion of the brake fluid out of the reservoir prior to pushing them back into the caliper. This prevents overflow mess.

    Always enjoy the 1A videos. It is a good idea to remove the master cylinder lid prior to pushing the piston back into the caliper. And put the old pad into the caliper so the pliers don't muss up the piston or piston boot. If you have time bleed the brakes with a helper or gravity bleed them yourself since brake fluid absorbs moisture. You don't want the metal brake line to rust from the inside out, it'll ruin your day.

    • @steve069
      @steve069 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Don't bother doing that, use a large old school style steel C-Clamp and one of the used brake pads against the pistons and compress them properly so you don't run into issues doing it with a pair of pliers.

  • @stevewilcox9659
    @stevewilcox9659 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    having a problem with someone using pliers to compress pistons on a dual piston caliper... why on earth would you show something like that? it is NOT the correct way to do it. you risk pushing one piston out too far and damaging the O-rings

      A measurement of torque. Buy a torque wrench.

    • @mathewm7136
      @mathewm7136 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      It's the amount of "Twist" or "How tight is enough" when tightening a bolt so that you're not leaving it either too loose or risk breaking it. In order to "torque" a bolt, you need a torque wrench. They have an easy to read gauge that, as you tighten the bolt, display the current ft/lb amount.

      On these rotors it appears the hub is not built in, so you can remove the rotor while the hub and wheel bearings stay on the spindle. On mine, it's all built into the rotor so i had to repack bearings and all that.
