    I'm in trouble, Ashley. I'm going to have to watch this first one 17 times to wrap my head around the information here. And I have three children so, counting interruptions, it took me about all day to listen to it once. But I was a lil' bit jumping for excitement when you introduced this series, and I freaking WILL watch 17x's if I have to to understand. I already screen shotted a couple N cycle pictographs to study on my homescreen. You are an excellent teacher for this material! Beautiful to find your niche!

    Hi Ashley, I love your videos because I have a science degree but it was heavy with chemistry, physics and math at UBC. I started gardening three years ago and have watched dozens of gardening videos but I’m finally learning the soil science and biology that is so woefully lacking in my background. I have high school biology and what I’ve learned from teaching science 8,9, and 10 science courses, but not what I need to grow healthy plants. I’ve made so many mistakes like using container soil to start seedlings that all damped off, fertilizing everything with 10-10-10 fertilizer, planting hostas in full sun. I am very lucky to live in North Delta in the Pacific Northwest in zone 8b where we normally get 93 inches of rain annually. I grew up in Vancouver with a mother who loved to garden but watering was just something we did in summer if it didn’t rain for a few days in a row. I have pages of notes and diagrams now and a much better understanding of plant systems and what they need. Your videos are so very interesting and I particularly appreciate the peer reviewed articles you show on the screen that provides even more detail. You are doing an awesome job, thanks again!!!

I am demolishing a shed next year and want to grow legumes there. It's about 15sq meters. I'll have about 1 cubic meter of compost. I'm thinking of digging it all into the soil. That soil was dry for 50 years, I guess it needs some bacteria..

    I loved this so much the geek in me had a real blast.
    As per usual I have a question. I got really intrigued by converting nitrogen to non bio available form by water logging. Is this the reason why when you overwater a houseplant its old leaves turn yellow? Because it becomes nitrogen deficient?

    • @GardeningInCanada
      @GardeningInCanada  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      That is likely the case. Especially if it’s under prolonged periods of high moisture for more than 2 to 3 days

    • @laurentco
      @laurentco 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I understand it, Roots need gas exchange too. So if your plant is overwatered, it’s roots are not getting enough oxygen. (Assuming we’re not talking about plants that have adapted to growing in standing water.)

    Love your videos. So much information. I am going to be planting dozens of berry bushes and fruit trees on my property thus spring. I was told about cation exchange in relation to the amount of organic material in the soil. If there is a high level of organic material the more the soil can hold onto nutrients. So by adding lots of organic material to the soil at planting and adding tonnes of nutrient rich compost like soybean meal. You wouldn't have to fertilize again for years in a closed loop system with the leaves fall and breaking down fertilizing its self. Is this the case and could the organic material added be peat moss? Would love to see a video on that science. If there is already one could i get a link please.

    • @GardeningInCanada
      @GardeningInCanada  2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Question: for blossom end rot and organic fertilizer in a large container, if you use an all purpose (like a 4-4-4) at transplanting time mixed into the medium, would it be better to just not add any more throughout growth? As in, the NH4 would be used up during vegetative growth and then at that point the channels would be available for the rest during blossom/fruiting? Or would the rest wash out? Maybe its whole own video if it’s a complicated answer, haha.

I have to go back and re-listen to your statements about carbonates and the nitrates(?) from organic fertilizers. I'm guessing that's why gypsum is recommended over garden lime..? (💡 Video about differences between common garden products that have similar uses/attributes and are mistakenly used interchangeably). How are you breakin the bones down after dehydrating? Or are these chicken bones a mixer could handle? Ive heard of people putting fish remains into the soil...but gotta be aware of vermin so best rurally. I like this idea. I love fish bone meal! Adding apple cider vinegar can leach more minerals but unsure how much! My cats always love my plants when i use it lol

      @@dana102083 The bones are quite soft after boiling them for four hours in the Instant pot. Even after dehydrating, they will be brittle enough to crush up either in a mortar & pestle or in a coffee grinder.

    Have only watched half up to 17 min and my brain does not compute. I’m so tired and all I can think of is you just explained to me the process of cycling an aquarium. Ammonia to nitrites which then make nitrates. So is fish water a good option for regular watering or even as a fertilizer?

    What about household ammonia? You can buy it in cleaner section of most stores. I've seen some videos of diluting it with water and spraying on plants to help with transplant shock etc. Is it a viable source of nitrogen for plants?

    Question: I have a silver maple tree which should have fallen with the rest of them which fell in the last 2 years. My tree is extremely damaged; it has been split down the middle for 10+ years, lost many branches, and a large branch was struck by lightening 4 years ago. Last year, I watched another branch slowly crack crackle and fall. Why is this tree still standing? And can I help it to live longer?

      I suppose I should find a fertilizer with less nitrogen for them? The NPK for my fertilizer is 7-1,3-5 and I use it for all my plants. It is labeled as a all purpose fertilizer. And I combine that with a few slow release granules. Thinking of buying a fertilizer with higher P, but I find those are labeled as either a chili or orchid fertilizer commonly. But the same ratio can also be labeled differently between different brands. Or “orchid” fertilizer can have different NPK. 😵‍💫😵‍💫 Your series will be very helpful. 😁😁😁
