    After I had my second baby, I developed PPD around 3 months postpartum. I felt alone, and my feelings eventually turned into suicidal thoughts. I felt like a crazy person. I would be driving and all the sudden I would have a thought to crash my car, or if I was alone I would imagine hanging myself. These feelings lasted for months and eventually turned into horrible thoughts toward my daughter. Writing this is so painful for me, but honestly, we don’t hear about this enough. My husband finally convinced me to see my doctor. I called my OB’s office and they said the earliest I could see her was in two weeks. I would not have made it. I ended up seeing a random doctor at my general practitioners office, but he was amazing! He was an older man, and as soon as he walked in he hugged me and told me I’m not alone. I was prescribed a low dose medication and I started it right away, and guess what?! It worked! The next day I felt like myself. It was like a switch was turned on inside my head. That doctor called me the next few days to see how I was doing, and told me he was praying for me and checking to see how the meds were working. He saved my life. Over the next few months I saw a psychiatrist and a talk therapist. If you’re experiencing ppd please get help! There are so many resources!❤️

      My baby is now a month old, and I'm so worried it's going to creep up. Iv had depression as a teen and young adult, and I'm worried I'm more susseptable to it

      THIS!!!! NOBODY told me that this could happen! I had a 4th degree tear, my baby was extremely colicky, my nipples cracked and bled, AND I got mastitis! All of that interrupted my bonding with my baby. Worse, I felt like I had somehow caused these things because my birth and postpartum experience was NOT the earth mother, Hallmark movie vision I'd been fed and had expected! I ended up with terrible PPD and like you, I felt like a crazy person. Mine was severe enough that I required hospitalization. I'm SO thankful that you had a wonderful doctor who made it a point to tell you that you were not alone! And I'm grateful that you are still here to tell your story so other moms know!

    I love that you brought this up. My sister was not aware of any of these when she delivered her first baby. I made it a priority to make sure she was okay before asking about the baby. I called her every night to make sure she was okay, brought her food and cleaned her house when she didn't feel well enough to do anything. I cleaned her C-section scar and made sure it healed properly. I took her to appointments and let the doctors know what I noticed that she wasn't telling them. Your videos help me be a better sister, aunt, and eventually, mother. Thank you

    It’s kinda crazy but after I had my babies my dad was the only one that asked how I was doing/feeling. Of all people, my dad is not the type of person I would think would be asking this. He’s a very manly/ men don’t cry, prison guard. Lol. But all everyone asked about was the baby & it was nice to see someone still remembered I existed and I just went through a very big thing in my life. I’m due with my third in may & I’m curious to see how it goes this time around.

    This video is seriously so important. Postpartum, I had one person really ask how I was doing - and that was my husband. Everyone was so consumed with how baby was doing (which she was completely healthy btw) that they forgot to ask me (the person who pushed a tiny person out of their body) how I was doing. I tried to not read too much into it but looking back I may not have known if something wasn’t “normal” because I had nobody asking how I was doing. Postpartum is so crazy and every aspect of it needs to be talked about - especially this. Thank you for sharing! ♥️

    Thank you for posting this video. After a tumultuous premature labor I thought I had crossed the bridge and could focus solely on my twin boys in the NICU. However, the day of my discharge I sat in the car as my husband drove me home I kept telling him I was super cold (it was over 100*F outside and 99 inside). I made him turn off the A/C and turn on the seat warmers for my chair and I still did not have the light bulb that said hello!?! you have a fever. To make the story short I waited 4 hours before we made our way to the ER. My husband had to call 911 from our car because I started to blackout and at that point he had already checked my temp which was at 104 and rising quickly regardless of the frozen vegetables behind my neck and under arms. Needless to say I am glad we left when I realized my temp at 102.5 at the house was a cause for concern, but I wish I had been more proactive and told my husband something was not right earlier that afternoon. TRUST YOUR INSTINCTS because it was that doubt that made me wait 4 hours and in all honesty it could have been a lot worse. I'm still recovering, but happy to say I am feeling much better. >>>It was an infection

I’m working on my Masters in Public Health with an emphasis in Health Policy - some of my most passionate topics include health disparities & infant and maternal mortality. I can’t think of anyone more important to advocate for than our moms and babies.

    I wish you had talked more about other types of infection! I had an episiotomy that became infected after the stitches tore and I didn't realize it... I thought that much pain was normal! I also got mastitis within my first week postpartum and thought my low fever and sore breast were just because I was engorged from my milk coming in. Don't try to just push through your symptoms, mamas! Take care of yourself so you can take care of your babe!

Our son was 3yrs old when we adopted him so we missed all of the newborn stages also. I had a baby 11/30. I spent Christmas un the hospital with multiple Pulmonary embolisms/blood clots in my right lung. I had no symptoms of a DVT. And the early symptoms I had of a PE I easily attributed to other things. I didn't go to the ER until the pain was pretty severe and even then it was just for pain relief not for symptoms of blood clots, even though I had a slight suspension it was a pulmonary embolism. I was sent home on a trial basis on blood thinners and told to return if anything worsened. It did and I still didn't call 911, which I should have, because I didn't want to be a bother or seen as overly dramatic (I had my husband drive me in and he had to do the whole TV/movie scene of running into the ER yelling for help). I really wish that was talked about and emphasized to moms - seeking medical care isn't being overly dramatic. I have a great OB who sees patients every 2 weeks in the postpartum period. The ER and hospital staff when I was admitted, were fantastic and never made me feel like I was being dramatic or wasting time but I still felt like I was. My nurses and doctors were shocked at the amount of pain I was having, it even frightened them. And yet I still feel like I just need to suck it up and deal with the pain/symptoms. We really need to emphasize women seeking medical care, no matter how minor we think the symptoms are. I'm very blessed to be still alive after having multiple PEs.

    Such an important video ❤️ I had severe preeclampsia that came out of nowhere right at the beginning of the third trimester. I had no idea the signs I should’ve been looking for. I kept telling people “ugh I’m so nauseous but that’s pregnancy” or “oh my I can’t breathe but that’s pregnancy” I did not know something was wrong until it was really wrong and I went to the ER with a bp of 195/110. Luckily I was able to keep baby in for four days and was able to get steroid shots for his lungs and he is doing amazing. ❤️ I am now 3 weeks postpartum and am still recovering on bp meds and now blood thinners because I did end up with a pulmonary embolism also and am anxious everyday that something else is going to go wrong. It’s so important for people to know what to look for.

    In Australia (public system anyway - completely covered by medicare, not sure about the private hospitals) we get a visit the first day we get home from a midwife (who are all qualified in Aus), and then a nurse comes around later in the week, and then we go see the nurse another couple of times before the offical 6 week check up. SUPER grateful for our system, and our maternal morbidity/mortality rate is much lower.

    Really good video about such an important topic which needs more awareness raising so women know the signs. Be really good as well to talk about some of the other conditions that can occur that are not so common for example retained placenta. Also general rule of thumb if you are not feeling well don’t just think it’s normal say something and tell people so you get checked. Better to be checked and everything ok than to dismiss things and get really poorly.

Sadly she did pass away due to his lack of care. Thank you for this! It can be really difficult to tell, especially for us first timers, what’s normal and what’s a problem. When I miscarried, all the women around me kept saying “Oh yeah that’s totally normal” so I didn’t see my doctor until weeks after the first twin was lost. At least I finally started listening to my body and made an appointment so we could terminate the second twin. But if everyone hadn’t been telling me not to worry, I wouldn’t have had to bleed and suffer for 8 weeks!

    Thanks for this! I had heavy bleeding recently about a week and a half after giving birth. I ended up going to the ER and the dr did a procedure that found out I had left over tissue. I had no idea this could happen and I was so scared of what was going on at the time!

    Love your videos! I guess I just got lucky and had three of these in one pregnancy (preeclampsia in pregnancy, incision infection then PE after) 🥴. I really wish providers would emphasize more things to look out for post-partum (really knew nothing about potential PEs), and provide more support for the moms and their health after giving birth.

    In Nov 2015, my husband’s sister died suddenly, a week after she gave birth to her second boy; she was just shy of 26. Just after delivery, she had FIVE exploratory surgeries, and went through 14 PINTS of blood, because she kept bleeding out, but they couldn’t find the cause. They finally found it with a blockage in her spleen, which they removed the organ entirely. My husband was active military at the time, with us living in NC, and our families in MI. He got to be there for her in the case anything did happen. He even told her about our early pregnancy, and she was SO ready to be a spoiling aunt for us (FINALLY!) 😊 she was able to go home, spent about a week with her new baby, but had been complaining about back pain issues. Her docs said that it’s probably just pain experienced from afterbirth and the surgery, and her prescribed pain meds weren’t working, but it got severe enough to rush her to the hospital...she died in the ambulance...later, an autopsy showed that she suffered from an aneurysm, close to where they removed her spleen...I know that this was a VERY rare occurrence for any momma to experience, and one that NO ONE should endure like my family did. My father-in-law passed away 10 months after she did with a heart aneurysm, and we found out that his side of the family died from aneurysms in various places, so they are now considered genetic. My husband has to be scanned thoroughly every couple of years with cardiovascular, neurological (brain), and other body-system checks to see if he develops one too. So far, nothing yet, but we keep praying that our family still stays alive long enough to be a family...so PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE...DON’T BRUSH OFF PAIN THAT DOESN’T GET BETTER!!! Call your doc or 9-1-1 about ANY pain that’s not just localized in your chest, because you may have the “silent killer” without EVER knowing it. The toll is too great for anyone to bear, and our family has made do with adjustments, but things will never be the same...I sincerely apologize for scaring y’all with this, but don’t hesitate for help to let it happen to you 😕

    This is validating. A day after I was discharged (vaginal delivery, 1 day hosp) I got a 102 degree fever. Verified on second thermometer but I felt freezing and awful too so it was definitely accurate. I took tylenol and took a shower and went back to the hospital. By the time I drove the 40 min to the hospital my temp had gone down to 99 degrees and they acted so skeptical that I was there! I found it pretty baffling that I kept having to justify getting checked out 🤨

    I had severe complication and almost died 3 times on my son’s birthday. I pushed for 5 hours with assistance of the vacuum and an episiotomy. I then said we needed to do a c-section. I think my uterus was tired because after I was stitched up I started hemorrhaging. I was unconscious. They airlifted me to another hospital and I nearly coded in transit. The doctors at the new hospital. They decided that I required an emergency hysterectomy in order to save my life. After that I was placed in ICU and coded due to hypocalcemia. That was 5 weeks ago. I’m doing much better and on the road to recovery. The doctors weren’t sure if I would ever wake up after coding or if I would even be able to live without being a vegetable.

    I am 3 weeks postpartum, this is my 4th pregnancy. I am still having some bad swelling in my legs and feet.. swelling in other parts of my body but not as noticeable. I am breast feeding and no problem with that. I do not have any feeling in my urethra, it’s pretty much numb. I do not feel when my bladder is full and I get pain in my stomach and back when I have forgotten to empty my bladder. Initial peeing i Can not feel the pee coming out until my bladder is almost empty. My pee has somewhat of an odor but it’s not super clowdy. My stomach is pretty sore to the touch.. but i don’t have any serious cramping. I had pretty bad nerve pain during my pregnancy but I still have lingering pain from certain nerves like tingling in my upper thigh area and sometimes in my feet. Elevating my feet feels like a sand bag that is emptying, but as soon as I stand up again take sand bag goes back down. Are my symptoms normal?

    I just had my 3rd child in October and he was born at 11pm. They asked me in the morning if I wanted to go home. If I had said yes, I would have been there 13 hours post birth. Since I almost died from an infection and fever (105.4) 10 years prior after the birth of my 2nd, I opted to stay.

  • @jenniferpike8168
    @jenniferpike8168 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    That is an excellent handout! I noticed that one of the reasons to call 911 is seizures. I have epilepsy and, while I have been advised to go be checked out at the hospital for any seizure I have between now and delivery (due in October), I've had 4 seizures so far (not necessarily unexpected due to hormonal changes, etc.), based on the handout - seeing that seizures can be a symptom of eclampsia - tells me to not just write off a seizure postpartum as an epileptic seizure, but to still go ahead and call 911. Would that be correct?

    • @Nurse_zabe
      @Nurse_zabe  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would chat with your OB and neurologist and figure out a plan that is specific for you. Eclampsia can occur both in pregnancy and postpartum. Most people only think of it being an issue in pregnancy. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy!

    I was induce at 37 weeks due to cholestasis. My water broke I dilated and everything pushed for 5 hours and did it all natural and baby did not come. He was stuck. And needed emergency c section. They then told me I had to take off all my piercings I had so much. some couldn’t come off and they called someone to cut it off. Eventually it came off and went straight to the surgery. It was brutal for me. But I went through it on both sides since I pushed for so long I got tear and stitches and all. But I was prepared but wasn’t for the c section. I am three weeks postpartum and I feel like I did get postpartum depression for the first couple days. It was so bad. I just didn’t know how to handle it. I don’t think I still do. Going through all this and now still recovering it’s so hard.

    But I have one question... My mom had pre clampsia when she was pregnant with me. In her labor she had a convulsion and almost died. Can I also be in risk of having pre clampsia because my mom had it? Can someone that suffered from pre clampsia during pregnancy, suffer again from in in PP?
    Thanks a lot for this video, you’re a precious nurse and human being with such kind heart! 💕

      Often this information is reviewed after your delivery, which is why you might not have heard of these things. Pre-eclampsia may run in families, but the exact link is unknown (as is the exact cause). You can continue to have pregnancy pre-eclampsia after you deliver, and we tend to what these mom closely and have them set up earlier follow-ups post discharge. I hope I answered all your questions!

    I had pp hard with my first baby. Nobody could grasp why I was feeling the way I was. It was so isolating. I had it with my second but not as bad and I’m worried I’ll it this time around (due 9/28). Nobody cares about how the mom is feeling, it’s all about baby. Which is fine, babies are cute. Helen Hines I’m not big on the getting help part. At one time I wanted it and I reached out to my husband but that was a big fat fell. He didn’t understand and really just said I was overreacting. I definitely think the worst is over. I think a lot of my depression is marriage issues. But unsure. I don’t have help with my twins and the first 4 months was horrible due to a dairy allergy, colic, acid reflux and torticollis. I also have a two year old. I was a happy cryer when I gave birth to him.

    • @momtoanangelboytwinsdogsan1731
      @momtoanangelboytwinsdogsan1731 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Helen Hines ty and I guess just how I was raised. We didn’t talk about our feelings much. It was a suck it up and go on kinda thing. People in our area think we are a perfect couple. And I try to keep that going but behind closed doors we just fight all the time. He works an 8 hour job and he says he’s not working and then coming home and taking care of babies all day long that I’m the mother. And if I confront him about it I’m picking on him and he says he does help me. I try to be the best mommy to my children as I can be and I would never hurt them. So it’s not that like. I’m just sad most of the time and I cry a lot.

    hey Nueaw Zade or anybody that could help i"m 28 weeks pregnant and my doctor subscribed me progesterone to prevent premature birth because my 1st was a preemie and this is my 2nd and i can tell that this one isn't a preemie I am much bigger my amniotic fluid isn't leaking they did an ultra sound and they said everything looks fine and I asked my doctor what is progesterone? what does it do? all she said is it prevents you from having a premature birth and I said ok but does it strengthen your uterus or cervix? But she couldn't tell me she just kept saying it prevents you from having a premature birth so because she couldn't really answer any of my questions I just don"t take them and I lied to her about taking them and she"s kind of a bitch so I don"t know how to tell her come my next appointment because I told my husband and his dad that I lied to the doctor about taking them and they said you cant do that you have to tell your doctor that your not taking them so anybody know what progesterone is? Is it a vitamin a hormone? how dose it prevent premature birth? Will it affect the baby? Will it make labor harder or slower?
