I don’t use Netgalley. I want to be able to read what I want when I want to. I do not want to be pressure into writing a review for every single book I read. To me that is not what Reading is about. Reading is just picking up a book to read - take your time with it - Enjoy the book - you don’t have to worry about writing a review and just be in the story. That is what Reading is all about.
I totally understand that, Linda! I am not that great about reviewing the books I read, but in general I want to do better at that this year. So far I'm on track. Not every single book, but most of them. I do read for enjoyment, but think having even short reviews on Goodreads will help me when making my wrapups. Plus, it will be fun to go back and see what I thought about books later. I know reviews help others decide about picking up books too and when I love a book I want to be sure to have a review for it.
I went hog wild when I first joined Netgalley the end of 2019. Boy, I learned a lesson abt requesting too many. Lol. So I forced myself to read 2 a month and then I only requested from authors that I knew I liked because it made it easier to want to read them. I reached 100% in the Fall 2020 and only started requesting titles i knew I'd like either through a rec from a friend, or an author I know I like. That's really helped me keep my score above 80. Every now and then I'll request one that is a new to me author but I read other reviews on there or Goodreads to decide if it's a book I may REALLY want to read.
I have definitely had to learn how to reign in the requesting! I also like to review books I missed pub dates for by listening via audio if they come available on Libby or Scribd.
Congrats on getting to 100% a few months ago. That's awesome! My goal is to get above 50% before the end of this year. I feel like that's pretty achievable.
I have a Net Galley account. I mainly request books I really want to read like the latest books in my favorite cozy mysteries series or books in new cozy mystery series that look interesting. Using Net Galley in this way keeps me reading the books I request and reviewing them. I love being able to get reviews on different book sites to help promote my favorite authors and series.
That's a really smart way to use Netgalley. I will have to think about it a bit more once I get my percentage higher. I'm only going to request books on my anticipated reads lists for now. Once my percent is up I'll reevaluate.
I keep hearing booktubers talk about Netgalley books but never really understood what that was all about, so thank you for this explanation. (And I saw two titles I want to preorder!) Good luck getting that percentage up!
Glad you found this informative. I am hoping to use Netgalley a lot more than I have been in the past. Here's hoping! Glad you saw a few to preorder too. It's a great place to check for upcoming books.
Good morning Krista! I searched on youtube for NetGalley. I found your channel and I'm so happy that I done so! Just this week, I signed up for NetGalley. I was so excited to find a couple of books that were on my tbr list for new releases in the upcoming months. I didn't go crazy though, I have three that I'm working on reading currently. I just won Churchill's Secretary from Goodreads giveaways, excited to dig in to that one!
Welcome! Glad you found me. I am really hoping to do better with Netgalley this year. It's such a great service to have and so fun to be "in the know" with some new books. Good for you for not going too crazy at first! AND how fun that you won a GR giveaway! I've entered so so many and have only won once.
Thank you for doing this video. I have recently begun reading steadily again and have been a little overhwlemed by ALL the things book related I am seeing that I don't know about yet. This was super helpful for a NOOB.
I struggle with knowing if NetGalley is a good option for me or not. I really like the concept but I'm SO BAD at reading ebooks. But I really like the idea of getting my hands on books early . . . I have Book FOMO.
I am really awful at reading ebooks too. I should have stayed away from Netgalley, but I'm determined to get better. If I just stick to requesting books I've already talked about in an anticipated reads video I think it will be a reasonable amount of ebooks to accomplish. We'll see.
@@BooksAndJams I may have gone on to NetGalley right after watching this and did exactly as you said, requested the ones I've heard of and am looking forward to . . . I'll join you in trying to do well with NetGalley this year (assuming I get approved for any books).
I like to use netgelly as a way of knowing what new releases are coming out and not so much about reviewing new releases but I love watching the videos of them because I get a better idea of if I want to read them or not ❤️
Hi Krista! Hoping you reach your goal this year w NetGalley, I am sure you will! I do have an account but I have to be honest, I am not crazy about the layout of these ARCs. It felt disjointed for me not being broken out into chapter form, etc. Perhaps it is just the administrative assistant in me, but the format does effect my reading experience. I am thinking of giving it another chance, it could have just been the book I chose back then. Love that you are branching out with new and backlisted books - Keep doing what you are doing - You are great at it ;)
Thanks for the encouragement as always, Kristine! :) Yeah, I'm reading one right now that has some confusing formatting and random spacing every now and then, but I can over look it. At least so far I can. haha.
I made a NetGalley account last year because I was offered a book there. I never got around to really fill out my profile information in there but now that I have been offered the sequel to that first book, I have made it a priority for February to do so. I don't currently have a kindle or tablet so I have to read the eGalleys on my iPhone, so I will not be requesting a lot of books in there yet. But if I don't finish my profile now it will probably take me years just like you told about yours. You forget about it and then 3 years has past :D Good luck with your eGalley reading!
I'm glad you did this video because I've never had a Net Galley account and so I didn't know what it looked like. I doubt I will ever sign up because unless I can ever get caught up more with my own books, I can't imagine signing up for lots of new ones. I get a few arcs from Waterbrook/Multnomah and also from Berkley and have been fairly successful getting those read. I think it would be a huge temptation to request more than I could get read in a reasonable time. Best wishes on catching up!
I hear ya, Elizabeth. I don't request arcs from publishers so I'm not on any lists for physical books. Netgalley is one way I can pay attention to what is coming out and share with people books I'm excited about. I usually focus mainly on backlist and just want to switch it up a bit for 2021. Here's hoping I can stick with it!
I've used Netgalley for years and I always find myself in trouble with over-requesting. Especially when you have a new account and assume most publishers won't approve (and then they do!) I'm just over 50% now and that's really an accomplishment for me, with almost 50 reviews! I like to read a blend of backlist and new release just to keep things fresh without forgetting all the great books that came before.
That's awesome that you've done almost 50 reviews on Netgalley. I would love it if I can get my percent up to 50% this year. I'm going to try really hard!
This happened to me too! I didn’t have as many requested and my rating wasn’t super low, but it was in the 60s I think. So I’ve been working on bringing that up. I’ve finally done it...I read one that brang it up to 80%, and then I DNFd one that had been holding me back and I felt like I had to finish before I read more...and left review for it, to bring me up to 85%! I now have 2 more to read, only one of them being over a year old. So I’m almost there!
I read one in January so I'm on track to increase it. haha. haven't read one for Feb yet, but have a few middle grades on there that I hope to read in March. Should bump it up a bit more. I hope to get above 50% by the end of the year. It's totally doable if I just stick with it. Great job getting your list down too! I'm feeling inspired.
I love the idea of Netgalley, but I haaaaate e-books. It's just the one thing I can't seem to read. I never used it. But I love that it exists for people
I I proved my NetGalley last year from 18% to 56%and it wasn’t too hard to do.I want to continue to bring it up this year. I’m so jealous that you got The Lost Apothecary. 😜
Fantastic! That's my goal this year - get above 50%. Hopefully higher even, but if I can get to 50 I'll be happy! haha. I'm reading Lost Apothecary right now and really enjoying it.
You and I both! I made a page in my bookworm planner for my NetGalley books that I will read and mark them in there as I do. I definitely need to up my score to improve also. Maybe you can push me to make sure I'm reading them! Thanks for the video.
I have never been interested in Net Galley because knowing myself, I would feel like I have to read these books and be stressed. Thanks a lot for the overview :)
I can see that, but you do use your ereader a lot! If you just limited your request number, or spread out release dates of what you request, it might not get overwhelming.
I joined NetGalley last year and really need to work on my ratio this year. I started off pretty well, but around the middle of the year, it just started sinking. I haven't been able to work up a plan to get to the backlist, so I found a couple upcoming releases in the "Read Now" section and I'm hoping that getting excited about those will help me build some momentum.
Yeah, I'm planning on doing something similar and mixing in the old ones while still staying on top of the ones coming up soon. I just finished one today and started the next! Go us! We got this!
I love Netgalley but I do not have much influence and am not approved for quite so many books. They do have audio on netgalley now too, so that is fun. I don't have a horrible rating but I do have a handful I need to read and review.
I need to check out the audio side of things on Netgalley. I haven't explored that yet. Maybe that can be a reward for getting my percentage up a bit! haha. I'll have to set a goal for that.
Yikes! 13%! At least you don't have that many ARCs overall.. My overall NetGalley ratio is 73%; I've been approved for315 books and have sent feedback on 229. my goal this year is to read the remaining books published in 2015 and 2020 that I requested and approved for, but haven't read that would move my approval rating to 76%, almost 77%. Plus I need tostay up-to date on 2021 I joind NetGalley in 2013, so not too bad, I guess . I want to only request my favorite authors or ones I read before and really liked. So far this year, I have requested and been approved for one of my fave author's books that comes out next month, but 5 others by authors that are new to me. Some of my ARCs from 2015 and 2020 are available as audiobooks on Overdrive and/or Hoopla, so that helps, Looking forward to your live show tonight (Saturday).
Yeah, 13% is so so low. It's embarrassing. I'm determined to get that higher. The good thing is that it won't be to hard to go up! haha. I haven't been requesting a lot before all of my anticipated reads. Here's hoping I get it up! I can't believe how many books you've read from there. That's awesome!
Found it 😊 How's your Netgalley Score today? I was surprised after skipping a year, NG still sent books. Perhaps I just need to relax. Thanks for sharing.
I have Netgalley and like you I have too many books to get through so I stopped requesting until I can catch up plus I am terrible at writing reviews lol. Improving my rating is a goal of mine for 2021.
Hi Krista ...I was cleaning up TH-cam and ran across this. I laughed this time. How's your NetGalley score? 🌞Did you read Hlad's Churchill's Secret Messenger? I enjoyed it. I couldn't make out your oldest on the list lol. Fingers crossed you are at 50%
Thanks for checking in. I'm at 41%. I was a bit higher but then I requested all my anticipated releases for the end of the year and received some of those. I am still hoping to get to 50% by the end of the year. I can do it! I'm reading one right now. I haven't read Secret Messenger yet. Glad to hear you enjoyed it!
I'm so happy for you. You are an inspiration. Keep working for that goal. Guess a NetGalley Readathon is not in the cards lolol. I had fun rereading all the comments. Have a great day.
Hi Krista, I know how you feel. I’m currently working through my netgalley books, some from 2013! I know! Right ☺️🙄 only 2 from that year though thank goodness. I’m at 67% and not requesting. I was like a kid in a candy store when first joining NG😂 last year and this year though I’ve hardly requested. But I’ve got widgets in my email inside to tempt me😆which so far I’ve had the strength to resist. I’ve lots of books on my shelves too not just ebooks. My aim, like you, is to get my books down to a comfortable percentage. You don’t want to see my list of books to read on ng. ! It’s sooooo hard though to resist as I have some publishers automatic downloads. So I’ve just not visited since.......well.....yesterday lol 😂😂😂 I looked, but didn’t request. Us bookers can resist anything......except a book....right😉
You're doing way better than me at 67%. I think they suggest being above 80%. You're really close to that! You can totally do it this year. It is hard to resist going crazy with requesting. I am determined to get above 50% before the end of the year. I think that's very doable.
I just set up Netgalley. Let's do a challenge to see has the highest percentage rating at the end of the year. That will push me to read and review more.
Let's do it! haha. I'm aiming for 50 right now. If I can get higher than that it would be awesome. If I just don't request too many I know I can do it!
I made my netgalley account late last year. Luckily I resisted the urge to get a bunch of books. I only have one to review right now and should finish the book by the first week of February. So my score will always be 100% (that's my goal at least). It's so hard not to get a ton of books though!
I am hoping to finish out one of these in a couple days. I spent some time on it last night and am now into it, which helps. I love that you are aiming to keep your % at 100! That's amazing.
I'm glad I'm not the only one! I'm almost 1/2 way through one of the upcoming releases. I would like to try to stay on top of the new ones and then work in old ones when I can. At least that's the plan for now.
right now I have 4 books upcoming to read for Netgalley I cut way back asking kind of got overbooked in past. the main publisher I reviewed books for left net galley last year so I get their books another way. I don't know my percentage have to check that. I'm 93 percent. So I guess I'm happy about that. I know way back in beginning way back when I first signed up I did a bunch but never read and lost them because I didn't realize I had to move them before they went to archive. then when my main publisher went over there I started again and went out of control. but I cut way back last year to almost none now I'm asking every once in awhile for one.
The two I’m auto approved haven’t done that many books books go something and backlit. But not auto for st martin’s but a few agent email books for them. In beginning I was taking them all but a online friend that does a lot said I don’t have to take them just because I got email some were series hadn’t read them and read one I took and felt I missed something wasn’t crazy so I don’t take them now unless I really want. When I request any it’s usually hit and miss if I get approved harlequin most of time I don’t get approved. I find most want Reviewers that have a Blog or something like that so that seems to be a reason when I get declined. I review on goodreads, google play, BN, and amazon (when they let you. You need to have spent a certain amount in so many months to be able to post reviews).
I have 19 Netgalley books still to review so you're not alone. It's not easy is it? I've started a list on my phone and put reminders in my calendar to help me stay on top of it going forward but I still need to catch up on the backlog. Also, your picture may have been lost when Netgalley was hacked recently? Mine was. Make sure you change your password if you haven't already and reupload your photo. Good luck with getting that percentage up!
I like the idea of reminders on your phone to help remember your netgalley books! My plan is to keep up with the newer ones and then try to fit in some older ones here and there. Good luck to you as well!
Yeah, I don't read ebooks that much either, but am hoping to change that just a bit this year and read more of them. We'll see if I can do it! I just think it's a bit fun to be able to tell you guys about a few new books coming out and not just talk about backlist.

I have Netgalley and like you I have too many books to get through so I stopped requesting until I can catch up plus I am terrible at writing reviews lol. Improving my rating is a goal of mine for 2021.
Good plan! You can do it!
@@BooksAndJams thank you Krista.
@@BooksAndJams Best of luck to you!! Your commitment is admirable haha, hopefully your score keeps going up :)
Don't feel bad. I have 55 netgalley books. I also have 3 others that are not from netgalley that I need to get to.
I'm glad I'm not the only one! I'm almost 1/2 way through one of the upcoming releases. I would like to try to stay on top of the new ones and then work in old ones when I can. At least that's the plan for now.
@@BooksAndJams That's my plan too.
right now I have 4 books upcoming to read for Netgalley I cut way back asking kind of got overbooked in past. the main publisher I reviewed books for left net galley last year so I get their books another way.
93% is awesome, Donna! I have a bunch that went to archive, so I'm not sure what to do about that. What was your main publisher?
I reviewed some really good books and have read a few bad ones from Netgalley.
That's how it goes when you try out new books! I'm hoping for mostly good ones this year. We'll see!
Thinking I might try and join up
Have fun with that! :)
@@BooksAndJams no worries 😉
Hello. I have never used NetGalley. I like to read paperback books. I don’t read e-books. I order books off of Amazon.
Yeah, I don't read ebooks that much either, but am hoping to change that just a bit this year and read more of them. We'll see if I can do it! I just think it's a bit fun to be able to tell you guys about a few new books coming out and not just talk about backlist.
The in social media account you can connect is LinkedIn not Instagram.
Ahhh. Thank you.
Do you have to have a you tube channel or blog or can you just review on Goodreads?
I am almost positive just reviewing on GR is enough.
Reviewing books on Goodreads is good enough. That's all I do and I get approved for the types of books I review most on Goodreads.
When I register it wants my company? What is that?
I'm not really sure. Can you leave it blank? Or put your gr link or something like that? I don't know. Sorry.
