    The end was a bit awkward... at 25:02 Linus wanted to shake the boy's hand / give him a hug, but he didn't notice because some sound or something had him clutch his specs at that exact moment (which might, from Linus' angle, have rubbed him the wrong way). Then at 25:50 when the kid tries to shake Linus' hand, Linus shakes the host's hand instead and walks away.
    Awkward introverts unity! ....I guess xD

      Wasn't that guy a "bit off" ? Somewhat robotic-type? Not being able to pay attention emotionally, just going like a race-horse? I think Linus tried to signal him to kinda wake up, in the end. Linux and programming is great and all but never lose that something what really matters.

    I recently tried out Fedora 26. Two big problems:
    1. You can't change the booting order (Grub2) without circumventint the OS itself or at least Wayland. The file is protected and there is no way to open it with su (and get editing rights) or to change the permission.
    2. The soundcard doesn't work
    Acutally there is a third problem: no help from the Fedora community. Their forum is pretty much empty, many questions don't get answered, certainly not in any decent way.
    As long as not even these fundamentals have been taken care of in a decent way People won't join Linux. Those in the Linux community who would like others to join should focus on these issues and on virtualizing Windows in Linux. Graphics cards that can be used by both the virtual machine and the OS at the same time without limitations, that kind of stuff. That way you might get people to try out Linux. There also are people in the Linux community who don't want others to join, the snobs. Unfortunately, it is incredibly dumb of these people, the more people join the better it can develop.

    • @Wazzaps
      @Wazzaps 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      1. Your sentence isn't coherent. Boot order? Get Grub-Customizer
      2. Happens. Does no driver exist?

    • @peterjansen4826
      @peterjansen4826 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      As I pointed out, the problem is that Fedora locks the file and won't let you access it, not matter what you do. A Grub-customizer faces the same problem as the users does. I tried it out, it doesn't work because that Grub-customizer obviously can't access the locked file either. It is not possible to acquire rights to the file as long as you are in that OS (Fedora 26). You can't change the permissions of the file, you can't use a text editor and force write permission by opening the file with it with sudo.
      RedHat fucked up with this version of Fedora, it is being speculated that Wayland is the problem. I won't be trying out any version of Linux for the next few years, not as long as Linux still has this kind of growing pains.

    • @0Camus0
      @0Camus0 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Those are issues of the distributions, not the Kernel itself.

    • @peterjansen4826
      @peterjansen4826 6 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I know but the two come together so that doesn't do any good unless a group makes a better distribution with the same kernel.
      Not like Windows is perfect, don't get me wrong. There are enough issues with Windows (a few horrible GUI problems, telemetry, in-OS advertising...) but what it comes down to is that with Windows all your hardware will work guaranteed as long as the hardware is not defect and that you can run all software. That linux can't run all software is not Linux its fault. That certain hardware doesn't work on one distribution while it does work on other distributions, that is an issue. That you can't easily change the bootloader configuration is also a problem which could be avoided, that there isn't a good uninstall option (restore the Windows bootloader and remove the OS) also is an issue. A lot of this can be done by the user (in theory, if the users is very knowledgeable in this specific regard) but it would be nice if the OS would take care of that and there is a bit of a double standard that they try to make it easy to install it but don't put the same effort in uninstalling it cleanly.
      I criticize Linux because I want them to do better because I believe that OS software should be open source. All other software than the OS, drivers and API's can be proprietary but this software needs to be open source to best serve the users. It is crazy that you are stuck with one specific OS and GUI and so on to simply run certain software. I have a lot of respect for Linus Torvalds but I disagree with his statement, I believe that criticizing in a constructive way by people who would like to be able to use Linux is essential to get it improved. I am willing to join as soon as there is a Linux OS which works for me, which runs all software which I need, is userfriendly and works better than Windows for me. The Linux community should work on improving running Windows in a virtual machine with hardware passthrough. I refer to the Level1Linux channel.

    • @llewlem888
      @llewlem888 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Peter Jansen Bootloader is locked as a security measure, it's a good thing that no software can modify the bootloader while the OS is running on the same disk. To modify the bootloader's OS boot order, you need to boot from a different disk. The hardware device boot order you change in your PC's bios if necessary. Then you boot from a different disk and use grub-customizer to modify your main disks' OS boot order, which you can probably do from your install media, quite like Windows lets you, except Windows only lets you install Windows. Failing that, you can nearly certainly use SYSRESC CD to do it. I'll fetch that link now

    Linux kernel is like Windows kernel, a platform to support all kinds of services, thus non. Neither can be used when efficiency is of any importance. Linux can only be saved if Torvalds go all the way back to start making a kernel only for the most basic services. Less than 10 k likes of code only to support multitask and load balancing with the most basic functionality. No layers of drivers and apps. One layer only to get full control over cache misses, exceptions, interrupts and timers. I want a kernel that gives my dB ability to handle ten million requests per second. No house keeping bs.

  • @RockBrentwood
    @RockBrentwood 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    "Come join us" is a case in point of "be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it." Joining to do what? Further add to the self-admitted and self-described "kernel [that] is huge and bloated, and our icache footprint is scary. I mean, there is no question about that. And whenever we add a new feature, it only gets worse." [and at LinuxCon 2014] "We've been bloating the kernel over the last 20 years, but hardware has grown faster" ... actually it's gotten worse. Wirth's Law is in effect so that, for instance, a 64-bit distro, like Fedora 34, is running more sluggish on 64-bit machines than a 32-bit version Fedora 14 is on 32-bit machines! The bloat is getting worse faster than the hardware is getting better - thereby making the return to the earlier versions an actual *upgrade* ! Never mind the way Linus himself threw 32-bit machines under the bus. Hello, Linus, they are still fully operational; they didn't go away. You gonna do this with 64-bit machines in a few years too? And what kind of *incompetent* programming is going on here that you even need to make a *critical* distinction between the two in the first place? Programmers are supposed to make things portable, that's the first thing you're taught in programming. (Maybe that's part of the problem: "self-educated" programmers who are living embodiments of the Dunning-Kruger Effect.)
    Nobody in their right mind would join this, meaning: to further contribute to this. The only way I would "join" is to clear out the garbage ... by first seting out completely *refactor* and *reengineer* the entire technological/software stack from bottom up; kernel, app & utilities layer, both Linux and GNU, from bottom up -- thereby replacing and displacing them, and obsoleting them. In other words: not to join but to put down; and to tightly integrate them all (like OpenBSD does, for instance). So yeah: be careful what you wish for, because you just might get it.
    This article lays out the issue in its full breadth and is a real eye-opener. Not just on the bloat issue (which has made the entire GNU/Linux stack *morbidly* legacy) but on its hijacking by corporate interests, and many other major problems that have cropped up as of late. www.unixsheikh.com/articles/why-you-should-migrate-everything-from-linux-to-bsd.html

    I cant switch to linux. I need my software.
    Sure Linux has alternatives, but Linux has one nasty fundamental flaw for which i will NEVER switch.
    Parts of linux are coded by different people who DO NOT FOLLOW ANY RULES or standards of design.
    You have one idiot coding recycle bin and another coding note pad. One shows OK on the right, another on the left. Cant they agree one the dialogs ?
    Windows has dialogs that look and ask same questions over and over again. IT makes is super easy to respond and super accurate.
    With linux its easy to give wrong answer by accident because someone thought it was a good idea to ask a question in a weird double negative way and them put OK in the middle between Cancel and No, to spice things up.
    Make up some rules and follow them.

    • @13thk
      @13thk 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Did you really try Linux before?
      On Linux there are multiple desktop environments and each one has their own dialogs and etc. However, at least in my experience these environments are consistent with themselves. Sure there will be an app that doesn't like to follow the rules of the system. But that goes for all operating systems, I have seen Chrome not behaving with the same notifications with the rest of the system in Windows. And If you don't like any of the environments or find them filled with flaws you can always modify them or make your own
      But this is just my experience and I will respect your opinion

      Software argument, fine. But you can run a VM if you have a decent computer. Dialogs? Come on, now you lost me. You either didn't try linux at all, or you tried Gentoo or some "high-level" linux distro, that or you tried linux 15 years ago.
