E46 ZF 5HP19 Transmission Rebuild Part 2 BMW 330i 325i DIY

  • So I've had to rebuild my transmission because it was leaking. This is part 2 of 3 videos that I will do on the subject. Check out the other parts here:
    Part 1: • E46 ZF 5HP19 Transmiss...
    Part 3: • E46 ZF 5HP19 Transmiss...
    There should be 5 documents related to rebuilding the transmission in this dropbox folder:
    www.dropbox.co...
    In that folder you will find the exploded diagrams for the valve body as well as instructions for the proper resistances for all the solenoids.
    To see how to get the transmission in and out of the car, checkout my rear main seal videos:
    • BMW E46 Rear Main Seal...
    • BMW E46 Rear Main Seal...
    I bought my rebuild kit from The California Transmission Supply Company, which was an authentic ZF kit and they had the best prices I could find:
    www.thectsc.com...
    Check out Transtar's website here:
    www.transtar1.com/
    In addition to simply buying absolutely everything you need from them, including rebuild kits and friction rings and the oil pump, etc, you can get every small part inside of the transmission as well, including the little plastic tubes for the oil pump. Be careful to save your o-rings because they only come in the rebuild kit, I believe. They were out of those as separate items.
    Apparently FCP Euro has ZF oil pumps available so check them out at:
    www.fcpeuro.co...
    If you need to rebuild your torque converter and don't want to let them do it for whatever reason (maybe you're not near them and it will cost too much to ship to them and back), you can also buy a rebuilt one from Torco Enterprise, which is in the Los Angeles area, and they also sell on eBay:
    www.torqueconve...
    I reference several other videos in this one, particularly those of Jeff Richardson, which I've created a playlist for:
    • ZF 5HP19 Transmission ...
    As well as this video from transmission builder Gary Ferraro:
    • ZF5HP19 Gear Monitorin...
    If anyone is wondering, here is the cost break down of the parts I bought (around Jan 2016):
    Torque Converter $201.65
    Oil Pipes $13.08
    Rebuild Kit $179.95
    Reverse Drum $92.00
    F Clutch Drum $50.00
    Friction Plates $120.00
    Oil Pump $288.75
    ATF Fluid $39.22
    Grand Total $984.65

      Question? Can I put a ZF5HP19 in an E32 BMW 730i whose original is ZF4HP22? I bought one without a transmission.
      Please advise 🙏?

    Wow 50's kid, I am impressed. I work on my 2004 e46 and now my daughter's 2009 e90. But I have never had to drop a transmission. Really am impressed that this was done on jacks in a garage.

    Hi, you are just amazing. I admire your patience. And.....THANK YOU Thank You many times. I got the manuals and I am very mechanical. But your videos are what got me through this and decided to get back into BMW. Because...when they run...they do perform so nicely. So balanced. So fun. Again. THANK YOU. You a very talented teacher as well. Not sure what your back ground is....but....I don't think I ever found better videos for such projects.
    Here is my E46 story. Short version. Bought a 2002 330Ci with 188k miles knowing it had no reverse gear. Paid only $ 2,000. Considering the body is in perfect shape and the 1 owner car was maintained to perfection at a local BMW dealership can't loose much, right. In addition the previous owner already replaced about every hose and about every suspension part there is. Rides like new. ATTENTION: Rebuilt the transmission. Got a new oil pump of ebay. I didn't pay attention. Some Chinese crap. Saying something about 3 year warranty. Didn't even realize its Chinese. I found out they buy or gather the broken ones and rebuild them. Of course improperly. Guess what. I am in the process starting over. This time with a ZF OEM oil pump. But when you see that the convertible has a counter balancing battery mount to offset body vibrations you know...it is German engineered alright.
    Unfortunately Engine threw out a rod bearing. No idea why. It was very cold here in Chicago. May be that had some to do with it. So, replacement engine of eBay with only 72k miles going in. Does it ever end? Hope so. Spent more car working on this thing than anyone driving it. Literally. And it is more expensive than I thought. Liked the BMW feel after so many years of not having owned one. Got myself a 2008 M6 with 40k miles and that beautiful V10.

Doe zo voort.

    Great job on the video. I have not finished the 3 parts yet but wanted to say that just observing the way things are described I can understand better how they work. The two things I have not done before AT and differentials repairs are not longer much of a challenge. Thanks for the lesson. I have being working on cars since I was 11 yrs. and have done many full engine rebuilds and I do electronics work too, but I was always afraid of doing transmissions. So I am about to do my 7th rebuild because of numerous issues with previous rebuilds and would like to share a trick. If doing a complete rebuild with all of the internals removed, it is easier to put internal parts together outside of the transmission. Input shaft will be facing the ground and output in the air. Again, basically building up form input to output. Aligning clutch will be very easy. Then transmission case can slide over the whole assembly once D&G drum and oil ports on input side are aligned. I was able to only rest the transmission case first and carefully align D&G drum as well as oil ports. Then a little push on the case will slide assembly in the rest of the way. After that D&G drum bolts can be tightened by hand and transmission laid down.
    No need to make a special took or hassle with aligning three clutches. Of course this works only if all of the internals are removed.

    I really, really appreciate the time and effort you put into these videos. I'm rebuilding one now, I probably couldn't have done it without you. I was concerned when I saw you put the torque converter bushing at .002" clearance... because I put mine at .005-.006 as the bushing seller recommended (I'm a machinist so I did this myself). Kinda glad to see that yours failed lol, now I know .002 is not correct. Might be helpful to others if you added a notation to the earlier part of the video about the .002 failing and that you don't recommend rebuilding the pump (already did mine, so I'm forging ahead against your advice. wish me luck).

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I wish I had the proper tools back then to measure the clearance. I just trusted the machine shop, which was a big mistake. I think the bushing distorted when they pressed it in. Should have gotten the "finish in place" bushing instead.

    good vids! A shame about the pump and having to pull it again, but that's the nature of the beast in the mechanic's world. Besides, for never having done one, you did a great job. Much appreciated the info.

  • @CanizaM
    @CanizaM ปีที่แล้ว

    I didn't see which side of the pump bushing got worn, but if it's asymmetrical like you showed, and it's worn the most on the bottom, you may also want to check your crankshaft bushings --- as those wear the crankshaft and torque converter drop lower and can start wearing out the pump bushing faster too.

    You're amazing. BMW needs to hire you to manage a North America BMW Museum...... You mention in your video you have extra footage that you didn't include. I would love to see the removal and installation using your brand new transmission jack. It sounds like it was still a challenge based on your final thoughts. How do ensure the torque converter doesn't drop during installation or re installation? The Bently manual references a tool to keep in place.....Congratulations for this feat and never giving up!

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +TonyS Haha, thanks. The extra footage is for the valve body which followed this video. There is a link in the description. The installation and removal of the transmission is covered in my rear main seal videos, also link in description. The torque converter doesn't fall out because the transmission is sitting back at a slight angle. The tool mentioned by the Bentley manual is really used for protection during shipping.

    What is the function of the square looking spacer between the pump bush bearing and the oil seal at 4:26 in the video? I guess it is to resist the oil stream (passing through the brushing) directly hitting the seal causing leak.
    Edited: Its function is to support the heavy TC from sagging to avoid damaging the bush bearing and deforming the shaft seal during the time when the tranny is not yet installed (after installed, the TC pilot pin is supported by the center hole of the flex plate and the "washer" is become useless after that).

    Bearing to TC shaft clearance of 0.002" that given to machinist seems to to be the issue; it should be between 0.003 to 0.0045". Tight bearing led to overheated, spun. Nothing is wrong to rebuild it correctly instead of buying new pump housing.

      I bought the car as a non runner. Previous owner ran it hot and the head bolts pulled straight out of the block. I time-serted the threads and freshened up the internals with bearings, valves, rings, timing chain and guides etc.. I also replaced the entire cooling system, ccv, all the sensors, alt, belts , starter and pulleys while I had everything apart. I hoisted the motor into the car today and next I have to install all the other stuff. Hopefully it all works properly. Timing the double vanos made me a bit uneasy.

      Good and bad news. Engine runs great with no cooling or oil leaks. Bad news is that I can hear a slight knocking in what I feel is crank shaft related. The oil pressure is within spec. The bearing clearance is on the tail end of what is allowable. I am guessing that either I have a slightly bent rod from when the car was started hydro locked or the bearing clearance is to much to be quiet. I don't think it's piston slap. I'm going to tear the engine back down and have the crank shaft ground and replace all the connecting rods with new ones. I'm guessing this will set me back about 1200 bucks and a month of work. My biggest fear is that I will go through all of this and still hear the noise.

    So what was that scraping? Cause I'm currently having a similar issue with the scraping I've rebuilt the transmission using your guide and everything went swimmingly.... Except for this infernal scraping... After I put the transmission back in I had horrible vibrations from the TQ when in park and giving it throttle... I really don't know if I just have a bad pump... Or a bad TQ.. both new... The old TQ also makes the scraping noise... Is it really just a bad bearing on the new pump?

    My C clutch looks exactly like yours, burned spots on the steel and some wear on the friction discs (all other clutches were perfect). I thought this must have happened when the trans lost its fluid (front bushing failure, just like yours) but maybe it's just normal wear and tear. The thing to be aware of is that there's different C clutches. Mine has 3 friction discs, I can see yours has 4, and the drawings of the trans show 5 (not sure if any actually have 5, The catalog says # 005, 008, and 009 transmissions have 3, and 010 has 4). So I bought new steels, and they are the wrong thickness. Watch what you're buying and measure the steel thickness before you buy.
    I doubt you can upgrade the 3 disc C clutch to 4 discs. The catalog shows a different part number for the basket that the clutch goes into. Stacking 4 of the thinner steels that I bought would not match the stack height of 3 of the thicker steels.

    I find your video's to be an invaluable source of information. I have only had my 330i for a couple weeks. Bought it knowing there were issues, the transmission wasn't one of them. I am getting a code P0735 and P1732. I was looking at replacing the fluid but in your filter and oil replace video you suggest not changing fluid. My car has 163000 on it. I don't know a lot of the history of the vehicle as the lady was elderly and didn't remember or keep records. Based on the codes what would you suggest? BTW the ccv video with the hose that goes down to the oil dipstick was spot on as to were to find the broken hose. The valve cover and CPS video and others have been amazing, I now have gotten all of those codes to go away.

      So I'm not really an expert on these transmissions so I really can't tell you what is causing that. I suggest you try to find a transmission shop that can accurately diagnose it for you for sure, ie. electrically testing the solenoids to make sure they work, etc.

    Grandson’s 1999 Porsche Boxster with the ZF 5hp rebuilt 30,000 miles ago. Front seal fell out. Bushing and toque converter good. Replaced seal fell (pushed) out again after 50 miles, pulled pump front clutches and pump looked new. New o-rings and seals after 50 miles transmission fluid under car cleaned up drove 10 miles and no leaks, drove 20 miles and fluid out of seal. Vent tube and hole between seal and bushing clear.
    Any ideas ?

    Great Videos and I am seriously thinking about taking this on; but I have a couple of questions. 1. What type of floor jacks are you using (3 ton) and how much clearance are you creating? Question 2. Would it be possible to list the number of hours your different projects take? Thanks for great tutorials!!!

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      I used 2 ton jacks and it's not possible to get the car high enough--you have to slide the trans off your jack, period.

    Hay 50s kid thank you for the videos. I just rebuilt my zf and replaced the D and F drum and all clutches and steels, i didn't replace the o ring on the first piston behind the pump. At first all was well but after about 30 miles it slips in reverse again. I didn't rebuild th VB but i did install the pressure regulator valve "fix". What else would cause this to slip? Thanks again

    First off Great write up. Followed you and your links to rebuild my own 03 325i tranny. Just got it back in the car and the transmission is perfect but some how I think I bent my steering shaft. Steering is tight and then breaks free as I turn the wheel. I used the wood blocks under the engine while the transmission was out of the car but due to parts and my schedule it was out for three months. Just wanted to know if you experienced any thing like that and/or your opinion on which part of the shaft is probably bent. Thanks again

    • @50sKid
      @50sKid  8 ปีที่แล้ว

      I doubt you bent your steering shaft. Likely you're having a drop out of your power steering system. Check the fluid first off.

    • @marcorton5714
      @marcorton5714 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +50sKid That what I though at first. Checked the pump shaft to make sure I didn't have a sheared shaft and flushed the system with new atf. Problem was still there and I had to leave on a trip.

    Did you soak the clutches with Trans fluid? never see you did the rear seal on the shaft.

  • @jaz2820
    @jaz2820 5 ปีที่แล้ว

    i know its a little bit too late but you didn't show how to put in the torque converter properly! that is very important! it must be installed into the gearbox first and then must be turned clockwise until it clicks for 2-3 times otherwise you destroy the tooths for the oil pump at first start and you must remove the trans again and must buy a new oil pump! NEVER install the torque converter ON the flywheel first. the torque converter must sit IN the gearbox when putting the gearbox back onto the motor!
