  • In this video, I talk about bookworms. Yep. Bookworms. There's a ton to know about them, so this will end up being a playlist which I'll add to in the weeks to come.

Thanks for sharing. Learned more than I ever planned on, but it's good info to have in the tool kit =)

      Thanks for the comment! :)
Yeah, it is such a trivial thing to know, but it can help when you come across those few books that have it! :)

Hope you guys enjoyed this little overview of bookworms! I've got a few other videos on them that will be dropping once a day for the remainder of the week. :)
Since I sell antique books, I do come across this sometimes. And, since y'all are watching, I'm assuming you want to do the same, so this info can be for you too!

If you could please clarify if I had a bookworm, I'll tell you the following:
I have a 2013 paper copy of Les Miserables I bought at target. Dug it put last week. It was in a box in a shop with any variety of beetle and definitely humidity.
I had my leg crossed in my bed reading it. Something was crawling on my leg. It was a small, gray, triangular/tear drop-like bug I couldn't really identify. I smashed it, brown goo. Two questions:
    Was it a book worm?
How long should I freeze the book? It's been in my freezer since Monday night, almost 5 days.

There is a chance that it could have been some kind of bookworm, since that could include beetles, but I'd think it is more than likely just a stowaway beetle. Buts can hide in books--especially hardcover books--and they pop out to say hi sometimes. I usually just get big scary spiders, but other bugs can pop out too.
The cold might have killed everything by now, but it's hard to know for sure since some bugs can survive winter temperatures. If I were you, I'd leave the book outside in the sun open for a few hours on a warmer sunny day. That might wake the bugs up and get them out and then you can shake the book out after that.
      Hope that helps!
P.S. Diatomaceous earth is an awesome non-toxic powder that kills bugs. If you're super worried about them then you could leave the book in a box with the stuff sprinked around it. You'll probably have leftovers of it and you can just sprinkle that around your house, garden, or anywhere else. It's great stuff!

@@antiquebookcollective It does. Two more things. I forgot to tell you that there was no visible bookworm type damage or any damage at all. And it's been in the freezer for 5 days. Is your OPINION I can take it out now? Thank you so much. It bummed me out because I was on page 10 and I was sucked into the story.

@@annex6 Yeah, I figured that was the case, based on what you said and the fact that it's a newer book.
Yeah, I'd personally take it out and just pop it in the sun for a bit--even read it in the sun. I'd recommend the sun part just because it should help to get rid of any remaining beetles, if there are any.

I've been getting book worms in my stephen king books I actually found one still living inside. How do I get rid of them?

    • @antiquebookcollective

      Yuck!
There's a lot of odd fixes out there, the first thing I'd personally do is put ALL your books outside on a hot summer day and let them bake for maybe an hour.
Once you've done that, I would then check the humidity of the room you keep them in (book works usually happen when you have too much humidity) and possibly get a dehumidifier. Dehumidifiers aren't too much money and you just need to get yout level down between 35 and 50 percent. (Personally I like to shoot for 40-ish.)
I'm told that sprinkling certain seasonings, like black pepper, cayenne pepper, and even using some essential oils too, can also deter them. Sprinkle that stuff on the shelves you have your books on and that should help to keep them away.
Now, with all of that said, I HIGHLY recommend putting your affected books in quarantine. You don't want the book worms going from one book to the next. I'd also look into finding out what particular bug is laying it's eggs on your books and then take steps to keep them away in the future too.

So I've heard! Never seen them myself though, but I've never seen any bookworm-ish critters in books to date either.
