One of the best albums of all time in my opinion. Probably can even be side by side with The Dark Side Of The Moon from pink Floyd, i say that because both albums have this feeling like its where the band really started and got his energy, the full band essence is at max in those albums. Great review mate, i love it! :) (Sorry for my bad english. I'm not from any country that speaks english hahahah)
Wow almost 15 years old this album, but I guess it's still "new", well for your taste and perhaps the majority of your viewers I can see it standing out as "new". I'm a huge fan of Keane as you know, but I fell in love with this album nearly 15 years ago and I've never stopped loving it or the band. What's most fascinating to me about this album is the depth it creates without a single guitar note on it. A rare treat, a rare album, and perhaps the best album of the century, and let me explain why I say that. The album has a curious symmetry to it. It begins with the majestic "Somewhere Only We Know", and ends with the most dramatic cut, "Bedshaped". While the next couple tracks somewhat resemble each other, as do the second and third ones from the end. "This is the Last Time", and "Bend and Break", are both up-tempo, lyrical pop pieces that follow directly after one another. "Sunshine" and "Untitled 1" are mysterious pieces built upon an eerie filtering and doubling of Chaplin's voice - could be perhaps a grower for you, as I think it's intentional to stand out on the album as mysterious pieces of work. However in between these, the pace of the album seems very modulated, as though the symmetry is an intentional effect. I'm pleased you haven't overlooked the degree to which certain songs depend utterly on Chaplin's voice. Each of "We Might As Well Be Strangers", "She Has No Time", "Sunshine", and "Untitled 1" are really vehicles for showcasing his voice to a different effect, and they would have much less meaning apart from Chaplin's vocal delivery. However it's hard not mention Tim Rice-Okley's beautiful songwriting with an attention to both coherent melody and some harmonic originality. Remind me to show you his side projects albums you might enjoy. Having had the benefit of seeing them perform live during the "Strangeland Tour", I can assure you that these songs all translate beautifully into a live setting, sing along, even tear inducing at times, classics. The quality of musicianship doesn't suffer live, nor does Tom's pitch perfect vocals. I believe if people heard more recordings like this one in recent years, they would be more inspired to pay a lot more attention to today's music. Well I've rambled enough, but I did forewarn you that reviewing this album would inspire me to write more than my usual comments, as I find it a truly inspirational album, worthy of anyone's attention and I look forward to more future Keane album reviews, along with Tom's beautiful solo album. I don't do this often but it's a nearly flawless album for me 9.5/10 So really a lot of rambling unnecessarily from me today James, basically for the most part to agree with you and encourage your viewers to give this a serious listen. Thanks for the thoughtful review. Cheers - The Other James
What a comment mate 😂 well I'll do my best to reply even tho it will be usless compared to yours. Lol. It is an amazing album and I'm so pleased that you showed me it. It's awsome that you got to see them on there 4th album tour. I would have loved to have seen them. Altho I'd take just seeing Tom because of his voice. Omg it's so good. Haha
I have the cd since 2004 and the song ´´On A Day Like Today´´ wasn´t in the cd. Probably added for a reissue on vinyl or only listed in UK. The cd also had different tracklist, This Is The Last Time is Track 2, on vinyl is on B side. Great review of an iconic 21st Century LP. 9/10 for me. Bedshaped is my favourite song in Hopes and Fears, but my favourite Keane´s song is Atlantic from the second album ´´The Iron Sea´´ a bit less good than the first oneI must buy this album on vinyl. Greetings from Canary Islands.
It was released only in the UK. Im a bit lucky cause this album was released here in Egypt by a local label called Mirage under license from Universal Music, and for some reason it was the UK version not the worldwide one.

Very good album indeed. Funny, I dó like Untitled 1....well...you see...opinions can differ :-) By the way: The cover does nót show microphones or drum stuff or whatever! What you see is a depiction of the inside mechanics of an acoustic piano. Love also your Paul reviews, thanks!
rockboy680 you're welcome! Keep up the good work, nice reviews you have! I'm into collecting all the Paul McCartney albums for some time now, man that's a lot! and I really like all the reviews here on TH-cam. I myself have not done reviews, I don't dare I think, it looks not natural or something like that when I only talk in English, I play piano mostly here on TH-cam :-) but I really like all this reviews. Also love Ram, Chaos and Flaming! Greetings from the Netherlands, Simon
Love this album. They didn't get too big here in the states. Somewhere only we know was a big song at the time. Coldplay has always been big here and people may have seen them as a coldplay knock off.
Love Keane they were one of the modern bands I could enjoy shame they stopped I would love to see a Tom Petty or a George Harrison review next Take Care!
It's pretty weird to me that you included the artwork score into the album overall score , i mean even if the album has no artwork , it's still as good as it is.

I'm as old as this album and still listening. Keane is the greatest. 💜

FYI, vocals on the verses of Sunshine and the chorus of Untitled 1 are performed by Tim Rice-Oxley not Tom Chaplin
the intro made me chuckle alot
this is the last time is one of my favorite songs of all time
What an incredibly British view out of the window :)
Very good album indeed.

Thanks mate :) didn't know that about the cover. I was just guessing that of the top of my head. Lol

Maybe so as they kinda feel similar to Coldplay at times. Well at least one of my two modern favourite bands made it out there. Lol
tom chaplin has a much better voice than chris martin. I also prefer keane's lyrics
Love Keane they were one of the modern bands I could enjoy shame they stopped
I would love to see a Tom Petty or a George Harrison review next
Take Care!
They are a great band for sure. Maybe another album will come
