  • Sixty Minutes catches up with Ray Burns, AKA Captain Sensible, one of the driving forces behind legendary punk band The Damned. He has recently scored an unlikely UK number 1 hit with a solo cover of Roger and Hammerstein's Happy Talk, and is about to release his new self-penned single I Am A Spider.
Captain Sensible lives in Croydon with his parents, his girlfriend and his pet rabbit, Rabbit. Rabbit's floppy ears are the first to hear the latest Captain Sensible compositions - the punk multi-instrumentalist tests out song ideas by performing them to the discerning lagomorph in the garden.
How do The Damned feel about his solo career?

I had a service centre in Milton Keynes and he was my customer; one, if not the nicest bloke I've ever met and I have met a lot of more famous artists in my time.

The Captain is still going strong and the Damned have been on an extensive tour this year. I'm sorry to say I missed them.

I saw them at the O2 Academy in Glasgow a few years back and it was the best gig I'd been to in years. They had a lot more energy than some bands 40 years younger, lol.

Just saw them a little over a month ago in Seattle, and they were wonderful. So great to finally see the classic core lineup that made both the Black Album and Strawberries back together again. It just felt and sounded right.

I still have some radio chats he did recorded from tape. I liked the song he did 'Croydon'. I once worked there , commuting by train from Brighton every day . Happy days ..

Fantastic video! I did a 'historical painting' of his rabbit a few years ago for a rabbit-themed art show (complete with cuddly toys in his room, which I'd seen on his appearance on 'Through the Keyhole'). It's great to see the rabbit appear in another film.

I love that man. Such a one off, and an absolute gentleman when I met him. He's the bridge between my love of punk and psychedelia. National fookin' treasure. ❤

I was a bit young for The Damned but remember Happy Talk. Even when i discovered The Dammed later, i didn't believe it was the same guy! Also remember them in The Young Ones ("Nasty").

I was introduced to his music recently and my gif when I heard WOT for the first time and absolutely bloody adored it and if course his other work on ‘Woman And Captains First’, but especially that song. He is such a legend and iconic artist. It’s great to see a brief but lively interview of him. Such a talented, inspiring and lovely bloke.

Clearly. They still tour to this day, and he's worth $4 million. Besides his happiness was worth more, shown by his enjoyment of playing for his bunny.
🤦‍♂️What a rough life, living at home, having a girlfriend, a pet, and loving what you do. It must have been agony, according to the constant smile on his face. Imagine living surrounded by a bunch of things that you love, doing what you want for work, the horror of it all. 🤦‍♂️

I was never a fan of the Damned, but I will never forget the night we saw (on TV) Captain Sensible singing Happy Talk.
My grandmother, exiting the room when the kid's pop music shows came on, turned around in shock, and confusion, exclaiming,
    "That's from South Pacific!"
Colourful hair, jump around making a noise..
    Ho hum.
Singing "Rogersan Ammastine", and quite nicely too - controversy!

Though I’m sure they did spot it (and edited accordingly) I really want to believe the Beeb didn’t realise the Captain had slipped a _very_ naughty word into his otherwise innocuous version of ‘Happy Talk’ whenever they played it!
