And his is one of the reasons i would LOVE to get into modding. I love watching and seeing what you guys build. This is amazing. I wish i had one of these.
you are a true pioneer with the mod scene I watch your videos all the time. Originally the luma 64. The gameboy guitar is crazy BTW and then this. wow.
Incredible work!! - this would be a really cool generic product with a USB C or micro USB input for the controller and an HDMI input for the display! :)
I'm surprised I hadn't have this video come up before, with the numerous Dreamcast mod videos out there. I guess my search results always had mods that actually made the Dreamcast experience better... not pointless ones like this. Just like Raymond Midgett said below... a mod that added a second thumbstick would make a LOT more sense. The number of first-person games on the Dreamcast that use the ABXY buttons in place of a second thumbstick, would benefit greatly. A better "screen mod", would be to make a flip-up screen that could be attached to the console, swapping out the GD-ROM drive, and replacing it with a GDEMU, and use the space inside the shell (where the huge, power-sucking GD-ROM drive was) to fit a rechargeable battery (or a bank of rechargeable batteries) to power the Dreamcast. I think there are wireless controllers (OEM controllers, modded to be wireless, I believe) that would also be great for that, since they would have their own power supply, and not drain the batteries of the portable Dreamcast. I don't think it's practical to have a "portable" Dreamcast, that uses discs for games. If the discs weren't as big as they are, that would be different (also, who wants to carry around 50 or more discs to play on the Dreamcast?). Design an add-on mass-memory storage device for the Dreamcast, and you'll get the attention of a LOT of Dreamcast users. There was one made for the Dreamcast... I think it was a 100MB Zip Drive... I'm not sure. I don't know if it was "just" a prototype, or if there was a handful made. The more important issue... how was the memory storage managed??? I have several high-capacity memory cards for the Dreamcast... some work well with all DC games, some only work with a few... but these cards plug into the controller. I'd like to know how the memory drive that docked onto the bottom of the Dreamcast managed memory storage!?! Of course, today... nobody would want a Zip Drive to "use" with the Dreamcast (I wouldn't mind owning that rare hardware, though). You could simply use SD cards, and the user can provide the memory cards, which keeps the cost down. Seriously, though... this screen-mod controller is a complete waste of time. If (at least), you had a portable Dreamcast that ran on batteries for 4 hours or more, it would make a little more sense! Also... who wants to play games on a tiny screen? The original GameBoy screen sizes (all the way through to the GBA SP) wasn't due to people wanting a small screen... it would have been EXPENSIVE, to have a 5-inch LCD screen back then!! Why do you think the screens are bigger on the latest (last?) DSi handhelds? They're cheaper to make now!! Anyway... you're using your Dreamcast at home. Your modded controller is totally pointless (though I give you props for making the whole mod, and that it works... there's just no logical reason to use it at home). You did it, just to see if you could do it!
If these were sold it would be fantastic, then we could play the Dreamcast without having an old TV or converter. What would be a fair price do we think?
As always, the battery in VMU is flat! Do you have a mod for that? Perhaps something that would use a modern rechargeable chemistry and charge it while it's in the Dreamcast?
amazing mod man! very unique, never seen it done before, if you could make that sucker wireless, that would by far be the best mod ive come across in a loooong time (I know its impossible though haha)
+Alex “TheTechDoc” Mods No, not impossible. Would require a wireless controller, a wireless A/V system (I've been looking into these), and batteries. I've been meaning to make something like that for awhile now, but my project work is slow at the moment.
+fibbef s that would be pretty impressive to get a mod like that done, not to mention squishing it all into a controller, all the other mods like this that ive seen have had transceiver boxes on the other side, connected into the av socket of the console
this is the most crazy thing i ever saw on the dream world ! and i saw some crazy dream things ! (and yes i own a Treamcast & a original japan release dreamcast)
Was this inspired by the wii u? Great concept though. If u put a dreamcast, a battery and make it a bit bigger you could turn it into a portable dreamcast and just keep the av output.
This is an awesome piece of work . I've been asking and l'm on the verge of trying to upgrade the dreamcast controller with an extra anolog stick . Like the Xbox and playstation controllers have . I even believe there is games on the dreamcast that can be controlled better with this upgrade. I also was looking into seeing if the dreamcast vmu could be upgraded to a mp3 portable player . That can have headphones connected to it and be able to play music from it on the dreamcast system as well . I believe if these two mods of the controllers and vmu could be achieved. It would be a huge hit with gamers and dreamcast fans alike .
I had the idea to do that a few years ago, but i could never get my hands on a Dreamcast to make it. I did however modify an NES controller in a similar fashion, complete with a headphones jack and volume control.
Yeah, I also had this same idea a few years back. I was researching using an iPod touch as a video monitor inserted into the controller that the Dreamcast console would relay video back to. I was almost there, until I came across that somebody actually made a GDROM emulator for the Dreamcast, and that changed everything. And that set me onto a much greater path for a handheld Dreamcast. So right now I'm working out a proper design in the spirit of SEGA's innovation, and I am hoping soon.
Hi Brother this is amazing...i want two...is it possible for you to make me two controllers like that?am in South Africa...i want to buy and will tell you how to ship them to me
I see two uses of this mod. 1 is that if you do not have a TV, you can use this as a TV. 2 is from this Wii U commercial: th-cam.com/video/4e3qaPg_keg/w-d-xo.html
Why would you want to play Dremcast on the controller when it's a system that hooks to a TV that you would have hooked to and anyone that has a Dremcast plays it on a TV. Dreamcast is Not portable, you can't play it in the car or on a Bus or Train since it is not battery powered like a Sega Nomad and you can't use it to play a 2 payer racing game because you will still have to have the split screen to race head to head with someone, Dremcast does not have local network play where another person can bring their Dreamcast to your house and hook a link cable between the 2 units and play head to head on septate TVs.
Crap! For one, the screen blocks the VMU!!! WTF man? how could you build this thing with such disregard to the VMU. Also, no headphone jack? really? omfg. Such a rookie mistake. BTW I think you stole this idea from the Nintendo Wii U, you really should give credit where its deserved. Some people are all about me me me me me !
Words don't describe how cool this is...What amazes me is that the builders of these awesome modsdon't seem to want to make any money
That's because there's no money to be made from a pointless mod like this - it isn't practical!!
And his is one of the reasons i would LOVE to get into modding. I love watching and seeing what you guys build. This is amazing. I wish i had one of these.
Dang! That's a incredible thing you did there!
I would love to have two of those
That is some awesome stuff man!
You just made it look like a Wii U gamepad! I love it! x3
Now we wait for a dreamcast portable
KlbDrwnOwns for now you can use in your phone reicast emulator on your android!! ;)

Far out, that's cool man.
Good work.
Can't wait to see what you come up with next

The Dreamcast U or the DreamSwitch.
Legend! I'll leave it there.
I had the idea to do that a few years ago, but i could never get my hands on a Dreamcast to make it. I did however modify an NES controller in a similar fashion, complete with a headphones jack and volume control.

The Wii U of the Sega.
You are amazing dude
I must have this sorcery!!!
where's the slot for the rumblepack? cool thing but whoever worked it out stopped at 90% and declared it being 100%
It's the Sega Wii U!
Sweet, now it only needs to be made wireless.
How do you make it tho
Impressive

Dreamcast 3ds
Sega beat Nintendo on this! But it’s not portable..
Crank the entire system in there and I will be impressed...
OWO
Shit i whant one

It's like a Wii u. It doesn't need to have to be hooked up to the tv. If someone wants to us the tv, you can still use the dreamcast.
Can you also use it as a monitor for other devices like a DVD player?
Crap! For one, the screen blocks the VMU!!! WTF man? how could you build this thing with such disregard to the VMU. Also, no headphone jack? really? omfg. Such a rookie mistake.
