Taking Ophir Pass to Cross the San Juan Mountains

  • Ophir Pass is a moderate offroad trail between the west side of the San Juan Mountains and the scenic Million Dollar Highway. Due to the rugged terrain it's not much faster than driving around the omuntain but it's certainly a scenic drive you can't experience from pavement.
All of these mountain mining roads are narrow and clinging to the side of the mountain or cliff. It's not your typical dirt road, but it's also not the most techinical offroading in the area. If you're careful, slow, and have cofidence in your vehicle it's very doable although will be very exciting if you're new to it. You do need 4WD, and you'll need offroad clearance like a truck or truck based SUV. Also practice putting your vehicle in the lowest gear ratio possible for slowly rolling down the steep trails. There is already wreckage on the hillside from vehicles that weren't careful or prepared.

Cool drone footage of the Yankee Girl mine. I got a really nice photo of it from the pull off on the highway when I was down that way last Spring.

Great scenery and excellent tips about going up those passes. At the top of Ophir pass is a nice hike up to Crystal Lake for even more beautiful scenery. While those rivers might (probably) have some remnants of metals, the water is/was always that color due to the high iron content (and turning into iron oxide) giving the mountains and thusly the river that color.

Was wondering when you were going to head back out on the trails again. First time out to Moab for some off-road trails in March or 2021, and I started with all your video's. You always had great scenery and very thorough. Thank you!

I need to get back out more, and I'm itching to do more in 2023. This year was much more hotel oriented than camping oriented. But I really want to get back to 4-5 days crossing the backcountry.

Why isn't that a one-way only trip? Very sketchy.

You don't need 4 low from east to west. I found the trail easy in an Outback. The rocks are annoying and a crawl ratio would be nice, but it's not necessary. This doesn't mean that you should not be a competent driver with basic off-road skills however.
