Starting 2024 with a Piano Concert - 1st Movement

Finally the 1st movement of my 1st piano concert is out!
MuseScore 4.2 has a lot of bugfixing - in this case the piece especially benefits from improving the playback of piano pedal.
And of course all you can hear directly comes out of MuseScore with the MuseSound playback engine!

I've been a composer for 24 years this month. It use to be much easier in the 2000s as there were competitions and call for scores all the time. We would send music out, get it back, and just keep on sending. The calls got way too specific in some cases and the last decade has been a real dry one.
I've also been a composer for 20 odd years and only have a handful of followers/subscribers. The problem is that I can write music but I'm just not good at knowing how our where to promote myself. I suspect most of us suffer from this too.

I know you have them split into their divisi parts, but I recommend using the "Trumpets" sound instead of the "Trumpet" sound in MS4. The section sound has a higher much higher quality and doesn't sound as nasally as the individual preset. I would recommend the same with the horns, using "Horns A6". If you are already using those and my ears are failing me, I apologize for the redundancy :) excellent composition!

I never tried to use the unisono trumpets because it makes no sense to have nine trumpets, but after your recommendation I'll give it a try. Especially because the second movement starts with very soft trumpets. So many thanks for this advice!

i also noticed he soounded very rachmaninoff-like in certain parts, and rachmaninoff was a genius (and tied with chopin for my favorite composer), so thats definitely a good thing
This is a blur, mostly Rachmaninov and Tchaikovsky, phenomenal composers and this is something I am sure they would love to hear more of, as do we all! Keep up all the great work!!!

This is a wonderful piece, can't wait to hear the subsequent movements. It uses a clearly 19th century language, quite reminiscent of Rachmaninov in places but I for 1 love the continuance of these genres. There is still lots of room to add new music of this style, especially when it is so well done.

I think it depends on the player. For some they are very hard and for some they are easier. For me honestly they are pretty hard to learn and spend a long time finding the right fingerings.
I can imagine that there is a lot of work with pencil first...

Eine direkte Hilfe oder Inspiration habe ich nicht genommen, aber natürlich ist mein Stil geprägt von Klavierkonzerten, die ich selbst gerne höre und dazu zählen hauptsächlich Rachmaninow 2 und 4.

Thank you very much! It took a while to find the right volume ballances, paneling and reverb settings. And even than at several parts I have to use hidden dynamics and tempo marks to get a more realistic sound...

This is great! Just a weird suggestion, amd maybe it's terrible: for an opening movement, the piece seems to start fairly weak, especially given the gravitas of the later music. Maybe a "heavier", more attention-getting introduction may make the piece more exciting?

I know what you mean and I like loud and impressive introductions. But there are many really good and "heavy" pieces which starts very soft. Dvorak 9th is just one famous example...

How are you controlling the tempo in musescore like you're doing here?
I set a lot of additional tempo marks to get the playback I want to. You can invisiblize them by selecting and pressing "v".

I've been surprised by the quality of the composition, I really like the orchestration and the piano writing is coherent with the rest (even if it can still be improved for somes bars). Congratulations. I feel like it's very influenced by Tchaikovsky but I could be wrong.

I've composed for solo piano and for orchestra before, but never a piano concert. My whole composing style is influenced by several composers of the romantic epoch, especially Rachmaninoff and Dvorak. I try to find my own style within this emotional harmonic sound.
It's just that i find that sometimes the piano textures are a little saturated, but it's probably partly due to musescore's sounds.
But honestly it's still impressive, I plan to compose a piano concerto this year and it gave me a few orchestration's idea, thanks.
And I see the Dvorak's influence, especially with the thirds, it reminds me of his piano concerto.
Impressive work, I feel influences from Rachmaninoff and Tchaikovsky. 🎶

totally stunning, Rachmaninoff's 5th! The thematic material is so brilliantly developed and the orchestration is just fantastic. I like especially the shimmering effect and harmonies at 2:31. A very refreshing piece, I just know the second movement is going to be transcendently beautiful! subscribed

Frohes Neues erstmal,
ich finde es erstaunlich, wie du als Hobbykomponist in der Lage bist ein so abwechslungsreiches und beeindruckendes Stück zu schreiben. Ich ziehe momentan in Erwägung womöglich etwas in die Richtung Komposition zu studieren, frage mich jedoch wie ich die ganzen Grundlagen lernen sollte wie Stimmführung, Harmonieführung, wie man für Instrumente sinnvoll schreibt etc... Ich spiele seit einigen Jahren Orgel und höre auch sehr viel klassische Musik, bin einer leeren Partitur jedoch hilflos ausgesetzt. Könntest du mir bitte ein paar Tipps geben, wie man das Komponieren lernen kann, und wie du es als Hobbykomponist schaffst so etwas geniales zu schreiben? Wäre sehr nett :)

Wenn Du schon viel klassische Musik hörst, solltest Du parallel versuchen in der jeweiligen Partitur mit zu lesen. Zuerst die Hauptstimme, dann die Begleitung, kontrapunktierende Stimmen und so weiter...
Weiter gibt es endlos viele Bücher über Musiktheorie, die Dir eine solide Grundlage geben sollten. Speziell fürs Komponieren ist zusätzlich Satzlehre ein Muss. Danach üben, üben, üben...
In Deinem Fall bietet es sich an zunächst für Orgel zu komponieren. Nimm Dir Stücke, die Dir gut gefallen und versuche das Prinzip der Stimmführung auf Deine Melodie anzupassen. Auch wenn das wie "geklaut" ist, es geht ja um die Übung.
Ich hoffe, dass hat Dir schon mal geholfen.

Thank you very much! I can imagine which measures you're talking about. As a hobby pianist I can estimate what is more difficult and what's less. But honestly sometime I don't know HOW difficult it is. Especially with the running thirds in both hands the community has different opinions of playability...

How exactly did you seperate the parts into the way they are orchestrated? Like how you go from an entire orchestra from the piano + a couple of other instruments on the page that are actually playing?

Kleiner Crashkurs für Bassklarinetten. Ich kann verstehen, dass man sich bei diesem Instrument nicht so richtig traut, in die richtig tiefen Töne zu gehen, wenn man es nicht kennt. Ich habe auch lange mich nicht getraut, für dieses fantastische Instrument zu schreiben, aber vor einer Weile hatte ich das große Vergnügen mal Bassklarinette spielen zu dürfen (ich nehme an, du bist kein Klarinettist?).
Die Bassklarinette kommt bis zum klingenden Kontra B, also genauso tief wie das Fagott. Ja, im Violinenschlüssel hat das 5 Hilfslinien unterm, System. Trau dich ruhig auch so tief für die Bassklarinette zu schreiben, denn es ist nicht schwer so tief zu spielen und der Klang ist toll. Auch nach oben sind der Bassklarinette wie bei der normalen Klarinette kaum Grenzen gesetzt (hat mir aber weniger Spaß gemacht, könnte aber daran liegen, dass das Instrument nur geliehen war und ich nicht die Zeit hatte daran zu gewöhnen. Deswegen sprangen die hohen Töne (also sagen wir ab g'') bei mir nicht so gut an).
Bei Deutschen Komponisten, die für Bassklarinette geschrieben haben, ist oder war es üblich im Bassschlüssel zu schreiben. Dann wurde sie eben nicht eine große None sondern nur eine große Sekunde höher notiert (das heißt, dass du bei Musescore ggf. was an der Transposition ändern musst). Das ist etwas ungewohnt, aber von Profis kann man das verlangen. Am Ende ist es natürlich deine Sache, ob du deutsch im Bassschlüssel schreiben willst, oder lieber internationaler im Violinschlüssel bleibst. Ich habe für mich festgestellt, dass ich lieber im Bassschlüssel schreibe, weil dann die Hemmungen für die tiefen Töne geringer ist. Vielleicht verzichtest du unterhalb des notierten großen E's schnelle Läufe, denn die Klappen für C bis Dis sind beim rechten Daumen und liegen ziemlich dicht bei einander. Das kannst du bei Fagotten machen, aber bitte nicht bei Bassklarinette. Bis zum E sind dir aber keine Grenzen gesetzt, was Virtuosität angeht.
Langer Rede kurzer Sinn: MUT ZUR TIEFE!

I wrote quite linearly, but of course I had a bit of a concept and a few ideas of the different parts in mind.

The ideas in my mind are mostly already orchestrated - not in details of course. So I'm writing directly for orchestra without sketching.

Thank you very much for commenting. You can fake rubato by adding a lot of tempo marks and ritardandos and so on. You can hide those elements via the inspector or selecting them and pressing "v". I hope this could help you.

Learning by doing and studying a lot of orchestral sheets. In my case mainly Rachmaninov, Dvorak and Beethoven.
Wie machen Sie das mit den freien Klaviersolis? Dieses Rubato, einfach fabelhaft! Wie geht das im Programm? Sie würden mir mit einer Antwort sehr helfen! Ganz abgesehen davon, ein wunderschönes Stück Musik. Ich fand es schade, dass er schon nach 8 Minuten vorbei war, ich bin auf die nächsten Sätze gespannt!

Schön, dass Dir mein Werk gefällt! Um ein "rubato" zu erzeugen ist das Setzen von vielen (teilweise sehr vielen) zusätzlichen Tempoangaben und ritardandos/accelerandos notwendig. Solche Angaben kann man mit "v" unsichtbar machen.
