I was never too interested in history while in school, but in the 11th Grade I had a US History teacher who was so passionate about history, and his passion and enthusiasm got me super into US History and eventually world history in general. Well the thing with the shovel is, that the one time my grandfather ever talked about his frontline service in the German Wehrmacht (he talked all the time about his boot camp experiences and his amorous adventures after he got wounded, but he never ever talked about his combat experiences except once), he was digging a trench when there was suddenly a Russian soldier in front of him. Well my grandfather had only his shovel and he did survive and his opponent did not. My granddad was a lucky guy. His SpA, where he was the directional gunner, got hit and he was the only one to survive with some grenade splitters locked into his spine. Which would fester out over the next few decades. And he was incredibly lucky again when he didn't get on his evac ship because the ship he couldn't get on to by about a hundred guys was the Wilhelm Gustloff the largest single ship sinking by casualties in history and my granddad didn't get on this doomed ship by a hundred people give or take.

In September 1918 the Central Powers were controlling most of norther Italy, most of Eastern Europe, most of the Balkans, as well as most of Belgium and some territories in France. Just looking on the map, you'd never guess that they were loosing at this time. They were loosing quite badly at this time due to supply issues, but it wasn't obvious and if A-H survived the till the beginning of 1919 we would have probably quite a different history, but alas it didn't and that was the nail in the coffin of the Central Powers.
How the Germans reacted to the first tanks is a matter of some debate, some claim that they were terrified but others say they thought they were useless and stupid.
Mostly they didn't, though there were some pre-planned attacks that went in, and a sociopathic cavalry commander had a last killing spree. However, there were numerous attacks in the final week, to convince the Germans that they couldn't stop the allied advances, and that they needed to sign RIGHT NOW.
