I studied for Cambriadge's IGCSEs, and in WW1 History they portray W. Wilson as everything he thought he was: neutral, a peacemaker, and basically a God. I thought of him very positively until I discovered your channel. Cool to see another, more critical, point of view. Cheers Chris!
That's the sort of view we were taught in US high schools. Learning at Uni how bad and weird Wilson was gave me academic whiplash.

I've told this story before but it bears repeating. When I was in junior high (7th or 8th grade, early 1980's), the history teacher was a Lost Causer who praised Wilson as being one of our best Presidents. When I got to High School, the 10th grade history teacher set aside an entire lesson that was could have been subtitled "Why (the previous teacher) was an idiot and Wilson is one of the worst Presidents." This was a small school so the men would have shared the teacher's lounge every day 🙂

It doesn't help that whenever mainstream media and films do portrait WW1 they basically do a less technological WW2. Case in point the Germans in Wonder Woman being basically Nazis 20 years earlier
Fun fact:Bulgaria had a bigger army than the US did until 1917 when the US joined the war.
Edit: Chris also many American volunteers fought in the Canadian army in fact I think 20-40% of the Canadian armed forces were American volunteers
Then you’ve got the famous Lafayette American air squadron in the French military pre-April 1917.
Would you ever consider making a video about the Lusitania? my grand father for sometime before his passing owned the rights to the wreck and we have been working on submitting all his records and documents of the lusitania to historical museums and societies but it's been a long process. I don't know if anyone outside my family would find it interesting at all but I think it's one of those crazy historical moments that no one seems to know about.

Fun fact about Theodore Roosevelt and his negotiations for the resolution of the russo-Japanese war: he was given a full set of samurai armor from the Japanese, and you can find it in the museum of military vehicles in Wyoming,(if I recall correctly) the museum is a completely private collection, and has among its collection the rifle that fired the first shot at the battle of bunker hill in the revolutionary war.

I’ve been studying American history for years and I’ve never heard of the Black Tom explosion until today. Always learning something new thanks to this channel
there is always more to learn thats why i love history so much!
Sidenote: That explosion is also why the Statue of Liberty's torch deck was damaged, and has been kept closed to the public ever since.

One thing I might contest: "There were Americans fighting in the French Foreign Legion." Technically they gave up their US citizenship with entering, just like any German did who was then fighting against his former home country or am I getting smth wrong here?
It depends if you volunteer under your own name or take on a Legion 'identity' I guess.
@@faeembrugh Nowadays you get a new name upon entering. No questions asked. You‘re either in or out. An entire new and French identity. I would assume it was the same back then.

I think you should watch "Man in Cave" by Internet Historian; I think you'd do a good job contextualizing some things IH glosses over for expediency or storytelling.

Literally drove past Niles omw back to Baltimore from Cleveland. I really miss the colors...the drive through the Ohio autumn trees is my favorite.
Here's something important to keep in mind: Any World War II veteran still alive today has to be at least 94 years old if they turned 18 in 1945.

My great great great grandpa who was German but moved to America when he was small in the 1880s lost his citizenship during the war. He eventually got it back though.
I love these WW1 videos! I’m also from northeast Ohio, my great-great grandfather was was actually a bomb inspector for the Canadian Army during the war just over here in Youngstown :)

One thing I learned was that during the Pacho Villa expidition, Pershing’s men carried a couple of 1903 Springfields fitted with Maxim silencers. I could be wrong on this, but this may be the first official time a military force used silencers/suppressors in combat.

@@PolishHussar04 yep. They even experimented with suppressors on the M1909 Benet Mercie machine gun, but they didn’t use them on the expidition.
Source: I interned at Springfield Armory National Historic Site for college credits. They have a log book of what they worked on between 1836-1946. In 1913, they fitted the Maxim silencer on the 1909 machine rifle (1909 Benet Mercie).

@@PolishHussar04 nope. The Maxim silencer (that was the name of it) was the first true suppressor put onto the market. Suppressors were experimented on the 1903 and other rifles even before and during the First World War.
WWII actually saw somewhat “widespread” usage among suppressors. You had the SOE and OSS with their respective suppressed pistols (Welrod, High Standard HDM), the Sten MKII(S) and suppressed M3 Grease Gun also were part of the Allies. The Soviets also used what was known as the Bramit suppressor fitted onto the Mosin Nagant for sniping purposes, and it was even copied by the Germans and used on the K98k. None of these were fielded in insanely large numbers, but they did exist and were used during the war.
Wide proliferation of suppressors the way many tier 1 fighting forces use was only a recent thing though.

Hi, Chris, I watched the original a few days ago and its even better with your commentary which always adds a lot. I have looked at WW1 a fair amount but had never heard about the giant explosion, I'm stunned that's not mentioned more often. That surely was an Act of War which would have justified US involvement without anything else.
The Harlem Hellfighters may not have a movie, but they got a prettt awesome song.

There was a case here in Puerto Rico involving the SS Odenwald in 1915 where that German vessel was using the port of San Juan and ended up being the first shot of the US army in WW1. I have a video covering that topic

Fun fact since we are talking about Germans and WW1: we got the item Hamburgers from Germans that came from Hamburg, Germany during mass immigration period with their selected steak cut called the Hambug Steak. It was basically steak covered in gravy I believe. The first hamburger was present at the St. Lous World Fair in 1901.

While not a student of WWI, I was familiar with the Major Williams quote from my days at Virginia Tech. Major Williams Hall (Williams was Class 1907) was a residence hall when I was there (Class of 1991) and that quote was their motto. The building is now an office building.

Lloyd Williams was killed 10 days later and won the Medal of Honor at Belleau Wood.. He was a fellow alumnus of Virginia Tech.

I was and am a Marine from August 05 to August 09 active duty. I was stationed in Okinawa for 2 years and camp pendleton calif. For a year and a half. One of our main history points was belleau wood, and I can never forget the quote retreat, hell we just got here by Lloyd w. Williams 2nd battalion 5th marines. Great video I really enjoyed it

You should visit Cantigny Park outside of Naperville, IL, closer to Wheaton, IL. In any case. It has a lot of WW1s tanks, first division, a golf course and I believe a garden. Used to be owned by Colonel McCormick. Just FYI, not the founder of McCormick & Company of spices and pepper. This one was owner of the Chicago Tribune in the 20s

I've not seen that video but it's a very interesting topic. In my opinion the war aims of each nation were simply to win, with any traditional "war aim" being completely secondary. Especially once the war actually started.

Some American army units still have insignia that contain a blue french ww1 helmet to commemorate the time they were folded into french forces.

Love the channel just caught a playlist of graves/battles; the farmers bit about the "iron harvest" and people dying to ww1 artillery to this day is awful to hear

That is the Motto of the 2nd Battalion/5th Marine Regiment of the 1st Marine Division those boys were legendary in WW1 and the Nickname Devil Dog was Deserved nickname for the Marines who fought in WW1 Oorah And Semper Fi for the Marine Corps

On the topic of the US intervention in the Great War, there is a great book called "The World Remade: America in World War I" by G.J. Meyer that is wonderful. It not only goes into the narrative from the outbreak of war, the road to war, military actions, and the peace conference afterwards; but it also has background chapters which flesh out America & the world during the time period.
If his name sounds familiar to some of you, he also wrote "A World Undone" which is the Great War from the European perspective. Both books are amazing!

you mentioning how Wilson never wanted to negotiate and how it can't be any other way but his reminds me of the scene in matlida where the dad says: "I'm smart you're dumb I'm big you're little I'm right you're wrong and there's nothing you can do about it"
I think what's interesting is the repetition of history how this whole situation, is eerily similar to the current situation in Ukraine
