  • The term guitar apocalypse is being thrown around right now and I can't help but agree. There are far too many guitars on the market and there are far too many people not adjusting their prices when it comes to the secondary selling market. Here's my view on the current state of the guitar selling industry.

Good thing I bought stuff when they were just old guitars

Absolutely. I hate that you have to think about the resale value when buying. As a musician it's the last thing I want to think about but nowadays you sort of have to think of the escape plan in case you have to move one on and with that you need to get in at the right price. Thank the internet for that.

Great topic. It’s such a weird situation. Anything pre 69 is basically unobtanium for the average player but the manufactures are riding high on that as well. Gibson with the whole ‘59 burst popularity wave (thanks to TH-cam, Joe B and a few well marketed YT personalities) are pumping out new $8-12,000 “reissue” guitars like crazy. I think vintage gear is suffering from the same issue classic cars did about 20 years ago when Barrett Jackson Auctions and all the car shows hit cable/satellite TV…. One hemi cuda sold for $2M, dodge started the whole “that got a hemi in it?” ad campaign and all of a sudden a ‘76 duster is worth $50k! Now it’s the same with instruments…everyone think that every guitar that looks like a sunburst Les Paul or ‘56 Strat is worth a fortune. In the average used market, prices on new stuff has gone up so much since Covid that in a lot of cases people are asking more for used guitars ( Squier classic vibes, Epiphone “inspired by” etc) than they were worth new. But in just a couple years those guitars that sold new for $499 are now $799 new and the used $499 guitars are selling for $600! It’s nuts!

I think prices are going to crash. Bidenomics plus too many guitars(including explosion of good cheap guitars)=people don't have the cash to spend, sellers need money too so will eventually have to sell but when there are no buyers prices will drop until the value reaches equilibrium. I am 56 and lost a bunch of great vintage guitars in Hurricane Katrina that I sure wish I had today, stuff I bought for cheap in the 80's and 90's that have increased in price crazily. Nowhere to go but down.

Sorry to hear about the loss of your guitars. Yeah I agree, it needs a correction and I think the vintage market will eventually crash once the boomers start unloading. Thanks for watching.
