Hello John Sison If you are using two HVL-F32M units, one as on-camera controller and the other as off-camera remote, how do you set the controller to zero output and still have it trigger the remote in TTL? Thanks.
it is nice, but for the price it should allow you to compensate the exposure in TTL mode, like Nikon flashes, or even the Neewer / Meike 320 for Sony. I also lightly dropped it, one of the tabs on the side of the foot broke. the foot part costs $70 + shipping, or the repair at an authorized center in NYC is $112 USD + tax ($11). Very expensive. A flash at this price should have an all metal foot, like Nikon flashes.
Hi John I have F32M and want to use it as the master to work my Bolt VS560S for sony as the slave. Yes, it fires the bolt (which is set in slave mode) but when the F32M is set as WL Ctrl What is it firing is it TTL to the slave?? I'm using it on a Sony A6000 set to wl mode. Can you help Really what I want to do is to set so I can have HSS and TTL. The bolt has HSS and TTL but I want it of camera, but can't find a setup at present.
Thank you for the excellent review. I bought this Sony HVL-F32M flash and seem not to find a way to test-fire it without taking a picture. Did I miss something? Could you indicate how to do it?
+volki_talkie To be honest, I haven't used the Metz flash so I can't give you a proper answer between the two flashes but the HVL-F32M does a very good job and its not too big compared to the other end Sony flashes.
Sameer Sameer Definitely the a6000. Its just smaller, easier to carry around and it offers pretty much all the same features and quality of the other cameras and more. Not to mention the electronic viewfinder comes in really handy if you're just starting out.
Hi John, I have a Sony A77 Mk.I. Would this flash work with this camera if I bought the adaptor as well. Could I also then put a radio flash trigger on the adaptor to fire it? If so which one would you recommend?
How does one use the HSS mode? I bought this flash for my a99 and can't figure it out. The pictures allways seem to be overexposed (too brightly lit) Does it go automatically in HSS mode?
Can the flash light up during he focusing so I can focus? Because my a6000 can't focus in the dark with the red light and the built in flash lights up only when I shoot and not before to help focusing
Hi John, I have a Sony F32m and a Sony A6000. I'm trying to get a couple of things to work. First I believe the A6000 built-in flash will not fire the F32 wirelessly or at all, please confirm. Secondly how do you set up the f32 and the A6000 for HSS either on camera or off camera please? I also have a Bolt VS-560S for Sony which I can get work off camera A6000 by setting the camera to WL(Wireless)/CTRL and the Bolt to TTL. However I cannot seem to get the BOLT to work HSS . Its frustrating not being able to use the A6000 in HSS even though it should. Can you help
+John Shelbourn The built in flash will not trigger be able to trigger the F32M off camera unfortunately. I don't have the unit with me but to set HSS the flash can only face forward (not tilted or turned) and you just set up the camera to how fast you want it to be and set your aperture (usually people the lowest like F2.8) and the flash will adjust itself to be on HSS. From memory it won't show if its in HSS mode on the flash which is weird but its definitely capable. HSS off camera will only work with other Sony flashes and it can only be the HVL-F60M, HVL-F43M and the HVL-F32M. Not the lower end ones. Hope that helps.
Hi John. Thanks for your review. Agree it's a good little flash, but I have had an issue with it an off camera flash. I don't have a radio trigger, but hoped that the flash from my pop-up flash would do it optically, but it doesn't and not sure why. have asked Sony for their thoughts, but nothing back yet.
Hi Clive. Which camera do you have? On a lot of the Sony cameras now, the pop-up flash can't be used to trigger off camera flashes. You will need to get another external flash to sit on top of the camera to act as the trigger.
Hi John. My camera is DSC-HX400V. After much discussion with Sony it does indeed seem that the pop-up flash will not trigger the HVL-F32M and the options are get another flash and use the HVL-32M as trigger or buy a Sony adaptor ADP-MAA. Strange thing is that I have a much cheaper YN560ii www.amazon.co.uk/YONGNUO-YN560-III-INT-YongNuo-YN-560-Flashgun/dp/B00BXA7N6A and the pop-up flash on the camera triggers this to fire. Clive
Do you mean that if I put the ADP-MAA into the hot shoe, then the popup flash will trigger the HVL-32M off camera, line of sight, with my HX400v? But did the popup used to work as a trigger, as mentioned in the review?
The F43 adds a video light and the quick shift bounce as well as well as power flash output. The only downside is that it is getting a bit large compared to the F32.
When compared to the HVL-F43M would you consider this a more practical option for people looking at their first flash? I personally consider the 43 to be a better overall choice than the flagship 60. It balances better and has much quicker recycle times. Overheats less as well.
Thank you! From memory, this is an automatic zoom so it will change as you zoom in from 24-105mm and will extend to 15mm if you are using the wide panel. You can't manually adjust it.
Does the HSS mode on this flash work when the flash head is flipped up/back for bounce flash? I'm so tired of Sony flashes automatically disabling HSS unless the flash head is in the forward position.
That was what I feared based on the HVL-F43M and HVL-F60M. I started using a "Winglight" bounce diffuser on my HVL-F60M when I need to use bounce flash and HSS at the same time ... it's just annoying that Sony makes us do stuff like this. I never had trouble using my Canon, Nikon or Olympus flashes in HSS mode when using bounce before I switched to Sony. Anyway, at least I found a work-around until Sony releases a new flash that can do HSS and bounce at the same time.
Sony just came out with a wireless trigger for flash but you can use some third party options like the phottix odin or another sony flash where one of them is on the camera and the other one is set somewhere else.
+Photospirit Burgener & Co. It will automatically activate when you're shooting at high shutter speeds in TTL but you must have the flash facing forward. It can't be tilted up.
By the way it is not true that in WL mode the flashes need to see each other. It is enough, when the slave registeres the flash somehow, e.g. through a wall that reflects the commander flash. it really needs to see the "flash" itself not the "flash device" ;)...
Boa noite meu flesh sony hvl-f20am é novo mais ele parou de funcionar depois uma peça quebrou a que movimenta o difusor, e agora aonde moro não tem onde poça concertar, mim ajude Obrigaddo. Sou do Brasil
Unless you have an A-mount camera with a pop-up flash you just need one. If you have an A6000 or an A7 series camera, you'll need two flashes - one on camera to act as the trigger and the other off camera. If you just need a trigger flash, the cheapest option is the HVL-F20M.
Thanks for answering my question. My camera is an A7. How far apart from each other can the flashes be and have the IR trigger light still reach them? I think you mentioned that in the video.

Hey John, great review as always, just wondering, do we need the adapter if you want to use this flash on the A6000?
Cheers
This flash will fit on the A6000 just fine.
Peace. :)
Thanks Bruce! :)
Cheers
R. Ran You need the adaptor if you have the a35.
I was able to get this flash for €111 (bundled with A7+kit). Great bang for the buck!

+Jean-Paul OLEFS Unfortunately there is no test button to do this.
Thank you.
Hey John,
would you recommend this flash or the Metz Mecablitz 52 AF-1 digital to use with an Alpha 6000?
Thank you in advance!
Cheers
+volki_talkie To be honest, I haven't used the Metz flash so I can't give you a proper answer between the two flashes but the HVL-F32M does a very good job and its not too big compared to the other end Sony flashes.
+John Sison Alright, thank you for the information! :-)
John by using dis flash light without the stand can I shoot the whole back ground black?
Hi John.... I want to buy a new camera and I'm thinking between the Sony a6000 , Nikon d7000 and canon t5i/700d , which one you would buy and why.
Andy Murray Yeah it should definitely work. I don't know too much about radio flash triggers but I've heard good things about the Phottix Odin.
How does one use the HSS mode? I bought this flash for my a99 and can't figure it out. The pictures allways seem to be overexposed (too brightly lit) Does it go automatically in HSS mode?

Do you know why RX100 IV built-in flash cannot trigger F32M🙏?
Will this work TTL with the Sony A6000?
Thanks
Hi, I cannot seem to figure out how to use second curtain flash mode with this unit, but all the reviews say it can, please help!
Hello John, will this work with the older Sony Alpha A100? Thank you.
+Graham Troth It should work provided you have the adapter for the camera which is the ADP-AMA.
Nice review John! Thanks..
Can i usea godox trigger for this kind of flash??
does it have rear curtain flash mode?
and how does one put the flash in the high sync mode?
Thanks. Simple and straight forward.
Does this flash have the multi interface shoe? Will TTL work with the RX1r. Thanks in advance
Matt Eden Yep. It will work perfectly fine with the RX1R.
Hi John. Thanks for your review. Agree it's a good little flash, but I have had an issue with it an off camera flash. Very interesting indeed. Looks like Sony may have just crippled that feature so you get more accessories perhaps?
Do you mean that if I put the ADP-MAA into the hot shoe, then the popup flash will trigger the HVL-32M off camera, line of sight, with my HX400v? But did the popup used to work as a trigger, as mentioned in the review?
Hi John
I have a hvl-f43m
Can I use this hvl-f32m to trigger in HSS mode?
Thinh Ngo Just tried it on my flashes. You sure can! =.)
how does F32 compare with F43 , thinking of getting it to use on my A6300. found F20 flash light was too small
The F43 adds a video light and the quick shift bounce as well as well as power flash output. The only downside is that it is getting a bit large compared to the F32.

I personally consider the 43 to be a better overall choice than the flagship 60. It balances better and has much quicker recycle times. Overheats less as well.
Yeah definitely! I use it more often compared to the other flashes. F43M all the way in my opinion.
Will this work with the Sony Nex-7?
Is manual setting in WL mode not available?
Cool that you did not say "A77 mark II" anymore :)
Haha I said I wouldn't say it =.P
Manual setting is not available in WL mode.
How does this flash do for close ups or macros
Nice video man, but how can I move the zoom on the flash in manual settings?
It has to be faced forward.

Jerry Jackson That's a really good workaround but here's hoping they add that simple feature on their next flash models.
Can i use the flash wireless with the Alpha 6000 by using the build in flash?
C. Del Duca No you can't. You'll need two external flashes. One on the camera and off the camera.
Just bought this gonna gonna have to return it, It has no test button or anyway to trigger on the unit. I do a lot of light painting
Any recommendations on a wireless trigger for this flash with a sonya6000?
Sony just came out with a wireless trigger for flash but you can use some third party options like the phottix odin or another sony flash where one of them is on the camera and the other one is set somewhere else.
does anyone get the wireless / off camera flash to work properly ?
£250 sounds a little rich for a busget flash
My flash is giving a yellow cast when use in bounced mode. Either way AWB or Custom White Balance. Any comments?
+Julio Aponte Its usually to do with the white balance. What creative style are you using?
Does anyone have an idea if the HVL-F32M will work in HSS mode with a 90mm G OSS 2.8 Macro? Couldn't figure it out...Thanks
+Photospirit Burgener & Co. It will automatically activate when you're shooting at high shutter speeds in TTL but you must have the flash facing forward. It can't be tilted up.

Thanks I just got one.
great video,
thanks
Will it work on sony a6000 with ettl functionality
Sajid Assad Yes it will.
Is this suited to the a6000?
Yes it is :)
How much in Australia??
Last time I checked it was 299
Thank You Phiniox Glade
The major missing thing on this budget flash is the Wireless Ratio mode. That is the main reason I chose F43M over the F32M.
Let me get this straight: If we want to use the Sony HVL-F32M off camera we need to buy at least two HVL-F32M units?
Unless you have an A-mount camera with a pop-up flash you just need one. If you have an A6000 or an A7 series camera, you'll need two flashes - one on camera to act as the trigger and the other off camera. If you just need a trigger flash, the cheapest option is the HVL-F20M.
Thanks for answering my question. My camera is an A7. How far apart from each other can the flashes be and have the IR trigger light still reach them? I think you mentioned that in the video.
Christopher Cox Yeah I got about 10metres away from the off camera.
Just an FKI Your video description has the F43M listed instead of the 32.
Thanks for that! Corrected =.)
the batteries get sooooo hot after about 15 shots. uncomfortably hot
this flash sucks. poor battery life and recycling time. I am always replacing batteries
What batteries are you using?
Will this work with the Sony a55 and RX100m2?
The flash will work on those cameras but with the A55 you'll need the ADP-AMA sony adaptor to convert the hot shoe to the new one.
John Sison Ok thanks!
will the pop up flash from the a6000 trigger it?
+Ali Mhd It won't unfortunately.
