Walzwerk Areal is a ca. 50,000m² former industrial site that blends history, creativity, and innovation. Established in 1918 by Giorgio Giulini as an aluminum factory, it was central to Switzerland’s industrial development until its closure in 1999. Visionary pioneers, including artist Martin Raimann and Facility Manager Roger Beutler, transformed the abandoned site into a thriving hub for art, design, craftsmanship, and technology. In 2004, the Sefer Foundation purchased the site, and Kantensprung Verwaltung/baubüro in-situ developed it with a focus on flexibility and gradual growth. Today, under SF Urban Properties AG, Walzwerk Areal hosts around 90 tenants, including businesses, restaurants, artist studios, and sports facilities. The site fosters collaboration and preserves its industrial heritage while adapting to forward-looking projects.
