as long as it has cooled fully before you freeze it - it wont go soggy. If it is still warm, then it will sweat in the freezer and go soggy :) So just make sure the cake it totally cool.

I have never heard of putting sugar syrup on cake. I am 31 and I have been baking with my grandmom since I was big enough to stand on a kitchen chair. I don't typically have dry cakes either whether it's a pound cake, chocolate cake or sponge cake.
