A little disappointed in this video. It makes the crucial point (several times) that older, less happy or forgiving versions of these stories preceded the contemporary versions. This is a really important point, moreover the video does a good job of showing that human nature and the world in general is a scary place and stories are not meant to be escapes but used to navigate these harsh facts. also, the video is right in claiming that as life got easier with the modern age, in Europe anyway, the stories got 'nicer'. Also, the video is good at pointing out that fairy tales were not meant for children. However, the video doesn't address the, for me anyway, much more interesting fact that fairy tales deal with fairy, or Faery, the largely unseen world that yet permeates the seen world. They date from a time when this world could be believed to exist and to be aware of its power, for good and not so good. Witches weren't just half blind old women who didn't know a chicken bone from a child's finger. They cast spells. The thing about a spell is that you don't know you're under one when you are. The modern world increasingly consigned the unseen world to children's stories or to myths, ie. stories of things that don't exist except in an uneducated mind. Only women and children knew that they did exist but that there were ways to avoid them or survive them. Fairy tales aren't just stories with non-existent fairies. They're stories for people, children and sometimes women who deal with children, who can see what adults no longer can but also know that these unseen beings are really bad, or in other cases, really good. Maybe a second video?

In a future Celtic mythology video, I talked a little about fairies and other mythical creatures. Still, I will do a video focusing only on fairies and I'll think about the different ideas you give to me. In this channel, I really want to show the real connection between myths and stories and real life and how they're so much more than just myths or legends, there's a deep truth behind them :)
