Imagine walking the streets of Utrecht and then hearing the music in your headphones being played for the whole city to hear but on the clock tower…… this is so cool!

Why can't America do this? We are so uncreative on bell towers :( I must see this glory in real life now!

You need extended instruments to play complex arrangements.
And you need very good players.
Technical support to keep the instruments in a good condition.
This carillon has about 50 bells and a range of 4 octaves.
Malgosia Fiebig is one of the best players in the world, and municipal player in the city of Utrecht, which has multiple carillons.
Every city has at least one carillon in the Netherlands, so there are a lot of possibilities to play instruments as guest-player. Which keeps it interesting for the musicians.
The Netherlands have a famous bell and carillon maker, Eysbouts in Asten, and they can only exist because of the many instruments overhere, though their clients are from all over the world.

There are very good carillons in the US and other countries with interesting musicians.
Some more extended than Dutch ones.
Usually on a university campus, or other 'special' location, but rarely in a city center.
In one hour, by cars or public transport, you have access to hundreds of carillons.
But not every musician is as creative.
And the programmed drums play the same tune over and over again till shopkeepers send in complaint forms!

Am I hearing this correctly? This is the Domtower with a piano?

    • @dutchman7623

Yes. Jeroen van Veen is the pianist playing on the square, Malgosia Fiebig is the player of the carillon in the tower.
It is technically impossible to play short low notes very fast on a carrilon.
Once a big bell is hit, it will sound long, even if it is silenced it will take five seconds.
If music of Queen was played only on the carillon, the low notes would become one long low sound, and you can hear them, those long sounding heavy bells.
With the piano it becomes more vibrant and rich in sound.
This is a beautiful combination of two instruments.
There are many concerts of Malgosia Fiebig on the carillon without other instruments, and you will notice that the composition has to be adapted to the possibilities (Carillon arrangement). Though I must say she gets 100% out of it, and dares to do this on a tower that will be heard by 60.000 people, willing to listen or not.
So whatever she plays on the tower, it has to be of high quality, there is no studio mode, it is always broadcasted over the city.
