    • @MajorCaliber

      Shuts down on the runway, because the passengers haven't had enough drama already. They get to be greeted by fire engines, and hopefully a tug... not sure how they determine which FBO gets the fuel biz, which local hospital gets to revive the pilot, etc. Basically, they've thought of the BIG items, so the survivors don't care much about the details, lol...

      Hi Tom, Garmin Autoland is designed to aid in the event the pilot is no longer able to continue their pilot in command duties. To help aid in the event the engine becomes unavailable, Garmin has recently announced new tech like Glide indications on the GTN Xi series as well as Smart Rudder Bias. Glide indications presents a visual glide range around the aircraft on the moving map with a line from the aircraft to the nearest airport. More details here: ms.spr.ly/6057Vu46L. Smart Rudder Bias is designed for piston twins to help with the initial response during a one-engine inoperative event. More information here: ms.spr.ly/6058Vu460.

      I'm not sure, if testing "for fun" is a good idea. That system must somehow find the nearest airport AND - i assume - signal a distress situation to the found airport.The airport thinks, it's an emergency and prepares itself for that. ..... Just for "testing"?

    • @garminaviation
      @garminaviation  5 ปีที่แล้ว +22

      The System will communicate with ATC over the emergency frequency (121.5) as well as squawk the emergency code (7700) during an Autoland activation, therefore declaring an emergency. For these reasons, this technology should only be used during an emergency. ^DK

      @crj9008 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Why is this designed this way? Autoland is the perfect feature for IFR/ILS landings under bad environmental conditions, not only emergency cases. The ease of activation is the "killer feature" of this, as most existing AL systems require quite a complicated activation - esp. having prerequisites like being in an appropriate state and location.

    Is the System giving any Information to the Controlled Tower of the nearby Airport? Or is it simply changing the squak to 77? How does the System work with busy Airports and Traffic ?
    Thanks for the Information

    • @garminaviation
      @garminaviation  4 ปีที่แล้ว +11

      Thanks for the inquiry. Autoland automatically broadcasts in standard phraseology, the aircraft identifier, position, destination airport and the nature of the emergency, ‘Possible pilot incapacitation’. It will broadcast on 121.5 and change the frequency to the facility (ARTCC, Approach, Tower, Unicom) depending upon the position of the aircraft. Since Autoland automatically declares an emergency, ATC uses the information to clear traffic in its path. Autoland also automatically changes the squawk code to 7700.

    • @maxlu4866
      @maxlu4866 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Well for now this system is just not smart enough to fly like the pilots do: it cannot consider other traffic other than TCAS and that is why it squaks 7700 and broadcasts on 121.500 and emergency. If this system is to be implanted in non-emergency situations, a lot more factors (AD traffic, other airplanes, most fuel efficient path etc.) needs to be considered. That's the reason why pilots are here. For me i probably would like auto systems to assist me after the IAF but that's it.

    Awesome, but how much will it cost?! How many digits is the price?

    • @GuruMN
      @GuruMN 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Roughly 3 million for the Piper and roughly 2 million for the Cirrus Jet. Eventually if there is an STC for autobraking, autothrottles, auto mixture(if not a FADEC engine), this autopilot, glass panels to display this, etc perhaps you might be able to pay for a six figure retrofit. Conversely there are other autopilots that will provide lateral and vertical guidance toward the runway but you would still need to teach someone how to control throttle and flare. 'Pinch hitter' training isn't a bad idea and much cheaper if you fly with family and have a person willing to learn how to spend 10 hours with an instructor to learn how to save their own life.

    • @Sokeresa
      @Sokeresa 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The piper m600 will have this feature standard starting 2020, and for no additional cost. It has not been announced for the sf50

    • @garminaviation
      @garminaviation  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3
