  • In this video I take around a kilo of Tigers Eye rough rocks and over a period of 5 weeks or so they will be transformed in to something really special and tactile.
I used the Beach 5lb tumbler to start off the process so I could get it all in at once.
These are a bit softer than say an agate and were quicker to tumbler as a result.
I did an experiment in the video at the polishing stage. I wanted to see which offered the best polishing results, the rotary tumbler or the vibratory tumbler.
The vibratory tumbler was filled with pre conditioned ceramic pieces and the polish used was cerium oxide.
The rotary tumbler was filled with plastic beads and the polish used was cerium oxide.
For the polishing process in the rotary tumbler I used a Crown rubber 3lb barrel.
I let them both run for the same amount of time, watch the video for the results.
I am very pleased with the results of the stones and they make a wonderful clacking sound in the hand like a fist full of marbles, they are super tactile and very shimmery.
If you want to cut to the money shot it's at 51 mins 10 secs
    Hardware used.
    Beach 5lb tumbler
Crown Lapidary 6lb Tumbler (one barrel)
Tumbler Viby SP A12 (vibratory tumbler)
Grits used were Crown Lapidary silicon carbide packs
    Crown Lapidary Cerium Oxide pack

Hello Les, I have found that running my ceramic media through the first step
a couple times is better for the rest of the steps
so they won't scratch the rocks
They come very sharp in the bags

Hello Les, I have found that using Silicone carbide for steps 1 and 2 works great
Then aluminum oxide for 3 and 4 will give you a much better polish
Silicone carbide in phase three is to rough
Cyrium oxide will stain rocks with tiny cracks
I found out the hard way being a peachy color
Also you may want to use a plastic screen for rinsing after step 1
    Thank you

If you work with the powder, do you need to wear protective gear? I’ve heard there’s asbestos in tigers eye. Is that true?

Tigers eye is actually a form of quarts and it has a hardness of 7 so it’s fairly hard it’s one of my favorites to tumble!! Yours look great! 😍

Would aluminum oxide be better to do a pre polish and polish with for Tigers Eye? Just wondering! Great video! I always use a bit of bar soap as a burnish - letting it go for a day.

Amazing video, thank you! I'm about to tumble a couple kilos of tiger's eye, but in my country they don't sell borax... I know it's not essential, but do any of you know a compensation for it? x

Ivory soap flakes. Don't use for every stage, just to burnish at the end. Look at channel meMiner.
