The game of Basketball has been my passion since I was 5 years old. I grew up as a kid watching my dad's recorded VHS tapes of playoff games through the 70s and 80s, and collected all the Basketball cards. Something about the game and what it represents just hooked me from a very young age.
My love for the game only continues to grow as time goes on. I love studying and analyzing the game, with an unbiased perspective. Feel free to subscribe, follow me on social media, and celebrate this amazing game and it's rich history with me!
I post videos every week on NBA history, predictions, hypothetical scenarios and current NBA topics.

I think 2018-19 Antetokounmpo might be snubbed from the list:
    10.3 defensive rebounds / 1.3 steals / 1.5 blocks
    Best Record in NBA (60-22)
    Best Team Defensive Rating (105.2)
    2nd in Defensive Rating (99.4)
Best Defensive Box Plus / Minus (4.1)

Hakeem could have won the award his first 12 seasons of his career. He put up 11 straight seasons of over 100 steals and 200 blocks. His rookie season he finished with 99 steals so just missed 12 straight seasons. As best I can tell only 4 other players have ever done this. Robinson with 6 seasons, Jabbar with 5, Ewing with 2 or 3 and Ben Wallace with one.

Hey Jonny, just a suggestion for a new format. How about a goat list about coaches or an analyses of different eras and their playstyles. like how was the main playstyle in a certain era and how did teams approach it. For the 80s as example: Showtime Lakers, Bad Boys Pistons and the Boston Celtics.
Keep up the great work ^^

For the play styles of different eras.
There are a lot of TH-cam channels covering this interesting concept. Rules and strategies do impact someone role and teams.
The best example? Doug Moe's high octane offense brought in the 1980s!
They were scoring 116 PPG simply on relying on ball movement, screens and constant cuts to the basket. Players were not to hold onto the ball for longer than two seconds.
They were basically playing like today's (a lot of) teams, but instead of shooting a three, they were setting for a mid-range jumper.

  • @NickPR87
    @NickPR87 2 ปีที่แล้ว +28

Hakeem is still for my money the most skilled two-way center that's ever played the game! I don't like when bigs get this award solely based on blocked shots. Him and Big Ben are two prime examples of centers who were also very good in the passing lanes, switching, help defense and defensive rebounding. Versatility should be rewarded more than just roaming the paint for layups to swat.
Also, Scottie never winning a DPOTY is absolutely preposterous! There were many seasons where he was the Bull's best all-around defender as MJ had more responsibility on offense.

While I don't disagree with Olajuwon's 1990 being #1 on this list, I think Big Ben's 2004 should also be #1, in a kinda, 1A-1B situation. For one, like you said, Big Ben was #1 all time in the DPOY era in single-season defensive win-shares. For another, Big Ben's less gaudy defensive stats can be explained away the fact that pace of play was slower than in 1990, and so were comparable if adjusted (hell, the steals were comparable period). Finally, Big Ben fouled half in 2004 as much as Olajuwon did in 1990. It all adds up to, for me, a virtual tie for #1.

One of the more underrated defensive seasons in my opinion is Kobe in 1999 and 2000 and maybe even 2003.
Although he was a lot worse offensively in his younger he was at his peek of his powers defensively everybody accepted as a top 10 defender and arguably the best defender in his team even when he had shaq.
He was very much MJ esk from that end except he gambled a lot less and was way more patient.
Witch honestly made him a better defender rather than him always biting and causing a potential easy bucket.
But unfortunately his steels was. Limited due to that mindset and some people might think he’s not give permission to defend her decision looking on us that sheet but with his physicality and IQ it clearly shows that this watch him play defense.
He oh and did I not mention that he average to block both the regular season in almost 2 blocks in the playoffs told you he was MJ esk.
And if you look at his defensive rating he did have the best defensive rating on his team even better than shaq.
With all due respect to Shaquille was only a paint defender and switches yes he can occasionally step up but his job is never to guard the primary well Kobe his job was to protect the perimeter and paint at times he was not a room protector but he was an amazing shot blocker.
With all due respect to Shaquille was only a paint defender and switches yes he can occasionally step up but his job is never to guard the primary well Kobe his job was to protect the perimeter and paint at times he was not a room protector but he was an amazing shot blocker.
Unfortunately he was overlooked due to his name and there’s other players being more known.
People always tend to say that they already Kobe‘s defense at his older ages which I kind of do agree with but they never mention how good he was defensively in his younger age.
