    Chapman is gonna lose the most. Turned down somewhere between $100m to $120m contract with the Jays and signed a $54m instead with the Giants. If anyone actually thinks he’ll opt out they haven’t been watching him the last few years, his All Star Oakland days as a hitter are a thing of the past.

  • @PermanentExile

    I wonder if there is collusion by teams to push back against him generally, since his contracts were getting out of control. It’s a lot to expect the owners to cooperate in such a way, but there’s gotta be a dollar limit somewhere that would cause it.

    • @frankluzuriaga742

      I was thinking that for sure

    • @rnobreaks4579
      @rnobreaks4579 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Not exactly collusion but close. Boras, for years manipulated the owners by having his players be teams union players reps. This led Boras to power in labor negotiations as his clients held the majority of seats in union negotiations with the owners. In other words pay my guys and get your votes... that is until the minors leaguers got a voice

    • @rnobreaks4579
      @rnobreaks4579 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Now the number of player reps have doubled and the owners don't have to give Boras all that he wants. I am simplifying things but there is a very real battle going on right now on the players side to determine the voice of the players. Change has only begun, I just hope the owners don't smell blood in the water.

      Doesn't take collusion to see that big, multiyear deals for pitchers is now a really bad idea. MLB GMs can make some very questionable deals sometimes but they aren't idiots. They are watching the same games and players we are.

  • @luv2sail66
    @luv2sail66 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Given the situation with injuries to pitchers in today’s game, why would any owner commit 9 figures on a multi year deal for a pitcher, especially a starter?

    • @wingracer1614
      @wingracer1614 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      They shouldn't and won't except in rare instances of a proven durable and consistent starter coming available. Or a desperate team that thinks they are just one good starter away from being contenders.
      For instance, I could see Fried getting a good deal this coming off season. Despite his problems last year, he has had good durability for the most part, has proven he can get back to form quickly if he does get hurt and has been pretty consistently good his whole career. Someone will take a chance on him. Especially with a lot of west coast teams (where he wants to go) being contenders. Burnes will also be an interesting one, I could see someone going big for him but after that? Nah. Maybe if Snell has another Cy Young caliber year.

  • @CommentConqueror

    The only thing Scott Boras did differently was negotiating on behalf of someone who wasn't worth what they thought they were. He used to only bargain like he did on more elite level clients. Take a look at all the mega deals that have been signed over the last decade. How many of em have worked out favorably for the team? Ohtani got paid cause he's a generational talent and so will Soto, but these 2nd level guys are not going to be making as much for as long as they used to.
      Then factor in how many of the pitchers are going to TJ surgery nowadays and it makes it even more of a risk that teams arent willing to take.

    Any player who doesn't take responsibility for the ULTIMSATE decision during negotiations has no one to blame but himself. Scott Boras has ALWAYS been about record setting deals. When he clicks on a deal, it's usually huge. BUT, there is a boom or bust to Boras' methods. While he hasn't busted too often in the past, that possibility always exists. Whatever Montgomery and Snell and the others turned down to play Boras' games ultimately rests on their shoulders. Grow up and take it like a man. No, I think Monty would be a smart a long-term commitment for a #2 starting pitcher, i.e., around 5 years. Maybe he'll be a #3 starter in 5 years, but I'd put him at #2 in most good rotations. Aaron Nola's contract with PHI (7 years, $172 million IIRC) was probably an overpay, especially in length, but Monty is a more valuable pitcher IMO. I'm surprised he didn't get something comparable. Maybe Boras thought he could beat the Nola contract?

    • @wingracer1614

      Nola's contract is the problem. All of these pitchers saw that and thought "I'm better than that" and thought they could get even more. Fact is, Philly was the only team willing to pay him that much for that long. No one else was going to do that and Philly is not doing it for anyone else.

    There’s a lot of money in baseball and it should go to the players, if Boras helps that then that’s not a problem for me. The only problem I have is when players sign big contracts then get injured, they keep getting the monies but prevent the younger players from getting what they deserve- prior to them getting to free agency. Players deserve the money, it’s just a question of how it’s spread about, I would rather see a younger player getting properly paid who is replacing an elite player on a big contract, but who is always on the il. I know the whole question of injuries complicates this.

    Boras is going to be fine with his big fish this off-season like Pete Alonso and Soto. And to be slightly fair, the players such as Snell, Monty, JD, belli, and Chapman got close to what they really deserve per year. Really not looking forward to the next offseason

    Don't agree with calling Montgomery a #3 starter. He's a #2 at worst.

    • @wingracer1614
      @wingracer1614 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Sure on some teams he's a 2. But if a team with WS aspiratrions has a 2 starter that has never, ever in his long career won more than 10 games in a season, they can scratch those WS plans. And yes I know youtube gods of sabermetrics, W/L isn't an important stat for evaluating pitchers but if your top 2 pitcher can't win more than 10 games EVER, you're doing something wrong.

    • @goorioles1976

      @@wingracer1614 Wins aren't used to properly evaluate a pitcher anymore because it's so dependent on stuff outside his control, i.e. offense.
      So yes, in a sense you're correct, but it's not because of the pitcher, it's because of the rest of the team.

    • @wingracer1614

      @@goorioles1976 BS. I don't care what team you're on, if you can't win at least 11 games in a season over a multi-year career, you are not an ace. Mid or back of rotation guy sure but not a 1 or 2. I completely agree wins are a useless stat for evaluating a pitcher's potential but what it does do is show a pitcher's actual production over a long enough sample size and his production has been crap. And at the end of the day, production is what matters and what players get paid for. No GM that's any good is going to pay a guy 30 million, put him at the top of his rotation to win maybe 10 games. That GM will be out of work real quick.

    I personally respect Scott boras. He is suppose to get his players the best money. Obviously this makes owners uptight when dealing with such a serious businessmen.
    I think this video highlights the variables that worked against Jordan. The seasons is already underway, he is getting older, injury is a concern, and there ar slithers who can give a serviceable performance. Jordan isn’t a must have talent, he is an above starting pitcher. But not an all star exactly.
    We don’t know if Scott did anything wrong per se, we don’t know if Jordan rejected other offers (remember the agent is ethically upheld to tell his client of any possible offers). It’s also possible owners hate Scott and don’t wanna deal with him consistently
