"Täällä Pohjantähden Alla" is also the title of a very famous book in Finland by Väinö Linna, who also made the book "Tuntematon Sotilas" (The Unknown Soldier) which has several movies made about it, the most recent being... not too long ago. It is actually a prequel (sort of) for Tuntematon Sotilas, since it tells the tale and history of some of the characters in the latter book.
We played a cover of this song (by Kristian Meurman, more rock/metal style) when we buried my father's ashes. I love this song, but can't help but feel sad every time I hear it. I've been really enjoying you react to so many different kind of Finnish songs, not just the most popular and typical ones. Can't wait what other songs you find!
This song is used a lot at funerals. I myself chose this for my brother's blessing occasion. Petri Laaksonen has also made Gospel songs and of course the Eurovision songs.
Song also tell that uniq way how finns usually handle sorrow. Private, only in darkness, under north star. Ok, maybe more in past, but song still tikle that part of us. Great song
Love this song❤ honestly tear up. The Northern Star is important to me, until I was 6 years old I wanted to believe that grandma is the Northern Star that protects me every time I see it. I still believe that even today, even though I am now 27 years old
As you mentioned the weddings. Not really a weddings song that one. But coincidentally there's a wedding waltz "Akselin ja Elinan häävalssi" composed for the movie "Täällä Pohjantähden alla" - which is the central theme of the movie and a popular choice for weddings.
The metaphor of Finns living "under the North Star" is actually quite old. In 1863, a religious poem was published and turned into a song that began with the words: Here under the North Star is now our homeland, But beyond the stars we'll have another home.
Moi Mauro! This indeed is very beautiful and emotional song ❤ The singer, Petri Laaksonen has good voice and clear pronounciation. By the way, Laaksonen has composed 2 Eurovision song contest songs: Eläköön elämä (1985, performed by Sonja Lumme, 9th place) and Sata salamaa (1987, performed by Vicki Rosti, 15th place). Terkut Suomesta! 🇫🇮
I'm a very weepy person when it comes to songs. This is one of those "I feel it in my Finnish soul" songs I can't sing because I get too emotional. ^^; Or souls, I suppose since in Finnish mythology we ha three.
Pohjantähti has always been there for us. Since the ancient times we have looked up at it for guidance. But we don't look at it anymore. We're too busy looking down at our phones.
You should definately lasten to The other version of this Song. It isnt choir styled like this one was, but its definately worth it to listen too. This Song is personally one of My biggest favourite Song that i listen to a lot.
I mean… while the civil war is an important and impactful part of Täällä Pohjantähden alla (not alla pohjantähden, where did you get that name from?), it is not what it is about. Considering that the story starts in the mid 1880s and ends in the 1950s that would be impossible.
@@emma-kati I've just listened to it and yeah, the commenter is high. I don't think it even was a show, just the movies Täällä Pohjantähden alla, Akseli ja Elina and their combination Pohjantähti.
I knew this was based the poem came from 1800s, but the hymn what I understood from my late grandma told me is that the melody is much, much older. Because during the Sweden's rule it was forbidden to sing Finnish in churches, so all they can do is hymn in Finnish.
Great reaction. 🤗💖 I think you would also like this beautiful and romantic song, sung by Marco Hietala: Nightwish - While Your Lips Are Still Red (OFFICIAL VIDEO)
Marco you are pronouncing correctly now the Finnish language why not to move here in Finland you are already true Finnish in your heart and Italian and Finnish are pretty much the same we are motional people in real life.
I don't think that translation really gets this song. Some nuanses of Finnish language are difficult to translate in English. It simply doesn't look like quite the same song in English.
This was performed at my grandfather's funeral this spring🇫🇮 Rest in Peace 1946-2024💙
Lepää rauhassa
Lepää rauhassa.
Isän hautajaisissa myös. 1958-2023

Watching this on independence day. Thank you Veterans for fighting for our Country's Freedom.
I sang this in the funerals of both my grandma and grandpa. Both died last year at the ages of 83 both. Rest in peace

Mauro your pronunciation is spot on!

Cool again😮
Sei molto simpatico. Detto da una finlandese settantenne.
Alla pohjantähden is also great movie/tv series that is about finnish civil war soon after ww1. roughly explained lol.
I mean, originally a book trilogy, but yes.

I think the song olen suomalainen is inspired by it. Pohjantähden alla,
Elää suomalainen
Yes täällä pohjantähden alla is petri laaksonen and olen suomalainen is kari tapio

Mauro, your pronunciation is better than 50% of finnish-swedes, (and I'm quarter f-s myself).
