If TH-cam disappeared tomorrow, where would you go? Yeah, there’s TikTok, Dailymotion, Twitch, Vimeo, and all kinds of other sites, but it’s just quite not the same, is it? Not only do they host different types of content, the culture, and communities they’ve created are just different from what we experienced with TH-cam. And it certainly is something you’ve noticed. Any other video sharing sites that have tried to compete with the platform, haven’t come close.
But, why? How are there no competitors to TH-cam? Could you be the first to create one?

It's really sad that TH-cam has no competitors. It is getting less and less creator friendly with all the false yellow marks distrubuted all around videos while the ads TH-cam themselves play out are much more deserving of yellow marks. I hope that there will be a competitor soon so that TH-cam can strive to improve and actually listen to the community.
There are competitors, kinda, like Odysee (a decentralised youtube) Rumble (a way more alt political youtube) & Peertube (an instance based youtube; viewable and usable on many mastodon and pixifed instances)

None of these platforms have nearly enough money to provide its creators with proper payouts. That's the problem Twitter has had for ages too. Google is a near trillion dollar company, others really aren't even touching the surface of that valuation. TH-cam also got a what 10 year head start to the others that started coming out later so yeah there's that too. @@MetalchipCovers

By "values" they mean that they don't want to be associated with something controversial that'll damage their brand. In the end it's just about money. They panic a bit more about online content that's way more unpredictable then something sterile a movie studio would produce, and not product placement they can review beforehand.

People talk about Nebula, but it's not just subscription, but also gated creator space. You can only upload videos there if you were invited or at least had negotiating power to make them want to have you. So, not even mentioning the limited range and amount of content for users, you cannot join Nebula as a creator unless you're already successful. It is a niche business model with which YT simply can't be overtaken, by design. It exists on the base of other platforms LIKE TH-cam.
It's always going to have to be gated for their business model to exist. Like so many others, the state of TH-cam gave birth them them but trying to be TH-cam would destroy them. They need to guarantee that the person they're signing up has a track record of producing videos that are compatible with the themes of their platform, and people actually want to watch. It's only possible if those creators are "vetted" by previous TH-cam uploads beforehand. TH-cam still takes on the mess of all the unpredictable new creators.
This. People mentioning Nebula seem like they're delusional if they think it will ever be an actual competitor.
Had Nebula actually been free, it would've been an actual competitor to TH-cam. Instead we got trash like TikTok.
@@Big-Image Part of their business model is hosting stuff that would be demonetized on YT in order to attract creators and costumers. Demonetized because it's not advertiser friendly.
And if you don't want to rely on advertisers you need another source of revenue. Hence subscription. So it's doubtful that they would be able to grow the way they do if Nebula was free.
People tried to be cool and create their own platform when what they should have done was to join Floatplane. But instead we now have 2 platform that basically work the same
From my standpoint as German/western person I agree that it’s quite difficult to find a good alternative to youtube. But at least for the Asian side of the world, especially, Japanese and Chinese users, I think there certainly *are* competitors to youtube. Like niconico Douga and BiliBili
TH-cam had a bunch of really good content creators back in the day who were just regular people with no money or production value. It was fun. It was stupid. It was entertaining like goofing off with your friends. Monetizing it and making it a full time job where you are forced to pump out content even if it's fabricated drama, that's when it lost it's soul. Top that off, some older channels have been taken down by TH-cam or removed by the content creators themselves out of embarrassment. Makes it harder to archive things.
Lets not forget about the stupid verified commenters who bought channels and spam their crap everywhere. It ruins the authenticity of what made the comments special
I can think of a few of my favorite channels and how they were a decade ago compared to today, and the tone of the videos completely changed when the channels went monetized, even down to the tone of the host's voice. Past that point, the videos were no longer as interesting and were centered more around fitting in the advertisement for the sponsor.

TH-cam monetization feels like a double-edged sword. On the one hand, when the creators are what make the site, it makes sense at first to give them a bit of the profit for their work, but over time it all became about the money
social media giants rushed in to fill their niches and now nobody wants to move on. the only reason myspace became totally irrelevant was because justin timberlake turned it into a weird music site.
That’s not all, it was also just unable to compete with Facebook
Myspace wasn´t even popular in my country it was hi5, but you know what was in the 2010s the awnser is facebook.
I loved MySpace in it's golden days 😭. I was so sad when it died and got replaced by the uniformity of Facebook.
@@joelyball3798 it’s kind of sad that in the early internet you could customize so much of your profile and now it’s all mostly the same. The whole hurdle of mobile not being able to do the same stuff as computers and thus needing different designs is not really an argument anymore since phones are a lot more powerful now. It would be nice if we would get that functionality back, but tbh it makes no sense to add aesthetic things to a multi billion dollar company.

Do you remember all the random webpages created by people about their niche hobbies and interests, complete with ridiculously busy backgrounds and nonsensical spinning graphics?! I loved that era of the internet; granted you could end up with some awful viruses if you weren't careful 😅 but I agree it's a real shame that everything has become so bland now in comparison. Google actively encourages you to have a uniform looking website to rank highly in their search for a better user experience, but it's a real shame that everything is dictated by money now... I suppose in reality it always has been.
I've seen Nebula grow a lot in recent years due to the fact that the creators get a piece of the pie themselves. Yes, it is a subscription model, but you not only help the creators directly, but also there are a lot of more informative content that would probably get you demonetized over here. But in my mind, it is the closest competitor. No other has spread to so many creators. It's almost like a patron in a weird way.
Most use nebula like a patreon alternative and continue using youtube, is like saying floatplane is a youtube alternative, it´s not not even close.

@@weird-guy yea, I mean of course it's not close to YT. YT is quite literally a complete monopoly, so of course nothing is going to come close to Google's coffers lmao. But I was simply stating that I do see Nebula growing because of the way the platform is ran. More and more creators are seeing the positives to uploading to a site like Nebula with it supporting the creators themselves. So now, it's being adopted by more than just information based channels. Yea, it kind of is like a patreon, but you get access to everyone's content and not just one person's.
I wondered if someone was going to say this in the comments. Sorry to say, but it will be a never be seen as a competitor as long as it's a paid service.

Don't forget there used to be Blip. Many OG creators who do movie reviews migrated to Blip due to copyright policies despite fair use and can be immediately monetized. Multi network channels have their own websites with Blip videos embedded.
One part you forgot to add, while youtube premium, movies and etc gives google revenue, they also at the same time make money by selling your data to third party.
it's unfortunate that any sort of youtube that has less rules/restrictions always gets filled up with the worst kinds of people
I see it more that people want a less restricted space, but don't like the fact it means that people with bad beliefs also get to have a less restricted space. So they abandon it instead of making it work for them. It's like staying off a life raft because a racist uses it. Instead of making sure other people get to use it, you LET racists control it.

Nebula is more in the realm of Netflix than TH-cam.

Agreed, but it would have to be the *whole* world, unfortunately. If you add up all of the people that are involved, from the content creators to the people who make the computers to the people who run the power plants to the people who dig the trenches to run the wires to the people who dig the ore that makes the metals and semiconductors, the economics would have to not just be less money-oriented, but completely different. I'm all in favor, I've never seen an economic model I really liked, but I don't really know where to start a change of that scale either.
Only another of the top 5 tech companies could possibly afford to build it. The amount of STORAGE alone far exceeds the connectivity side of things. Storage and the increase thereof is much more labour intensive and while some media storage costs have decreased over time, MANAGEABLE storage and the redundancy needed to avoid disaster is one of the most expensive things a data center needs. Power/cooling is another of the large expenditures. Bandwidth for Google is nearly free in comparison. Source: Managed corporate Data Centers for a living.
if youtube disappeared tomorrow my life would be upside down, i dont even watch tv anymore i almost exclusively watch youtube videos. in the Worst of my depression i could watch over 8 hrs of youtube in a day lmao just sitting there smoking weed and trying to keep my mind busy with videos

TH-cam has literally saved my sanity, if not my life.
We have daily rolling blackouts, and being able to watch downloaded videos in the dark, either with mosquitoes attacking as soon as the fan dies, or freezing in winter, makes a huge difference, it takes your mind off your corrupt government and the creeping poverty and unemployment, along with the hopeless feeling that you can do nothing about it.
And when I went through a bad patch, I could distract myself on TH-cam, or watch videos with people experiencing the same thing.
My condition leaves me with chronic insomnia, and it helps there too, soothing voices especially of disaster and crime channels, that play through the night, my husband falls asleep the moment his head hits the pillow, no matter the time, and if you can't sleep his snoring creates murderous thoughts so the distraction is welcome...
Dailymotion could very easily add just safe search setting that by default is switched to safe. That would solve the problem you mentioned at 9:19.
I mean the biggest reason, like you said, is cost. YT only just became barely profitable as is and its only getting more expensive to run. Video hosting is such a ruinously expensive business model that any competitor would quickly be on the verge of bankruptcy
I'm just going off the title, but youtube does have competitors, they just arent centralized! Peertube and odysee are examples. I dont know much about Odysee just know it exists, but i know most Peertube instances focus on education, while quite a few others focus more on entertainment. I do actually hope some youtubers will swap to these alternative, but its unlikely and unrealistic. These platforms dont pay, and are normally ran on donations, so a career on them just isnt viable.

First- No, peertube is NOT an alternative for youtube (I'm just not big brain in the slightest, it litterally says this in the FAQ)
Second-from what i can see, odysee is kinda like the Twitter of video platforms, it's not a great experience :/
It’s obvious why TH-cam has “no competitors” sure there’s Odysee and such, but it’s impossible to move to those sites permanently because of how unpopularized they are.
Odysee and Peertube aren’t true competitors, they’re still in beta and showcase what it would be like for an alternate video streaming site, but it feels more like a tour site that you’d temporarily browse through.
They aren't really competitors because nobody uses them. That's like saying some middle schooler running a 5k is a competitor to an Olympic marathon runner.
PeerTube isn't a TH-cam alternative, and Odysee is a politicized hole
There's a difference between an alternative and a competitor my guy. Those are alternatives, but they're not competitors. Because they don't bring real competition to youtube. They don't have TH-cam running for their money. Unfortunately only tik Tok does. Which means they're the only true competitor. There are many alternatives, but only one true competitor.
You are the only person I ever hear discussing the pros and cons of TH-cam from an objective business perspective. I hear plenty of people airing their grievances, many of which are valid, but they won't even humor the notion that, whether they like it or not, TH-cam kind of does need regular income to just exist, so it's either humor that notion or not have TH-cam any more (as a wise convenience store clerk once said, "Shit or get off the pot").
I can also feel only so bad for people who's entire livelihood depends on TH-cam. Most of the time, that was their decision. Relying on a system that has been largely automated for longer than it hasn't doesn't seem like a wise career choice. If it sounds too good to be true, it is.
I'm sure a lot of people don't want to hear what you're saying, and yeah, it can feel a little dismissive at times, but if they really cared about TH-cam improving and are willing to be more proactive beyond making an angry video saying how angry they are, they'd be wise to humor the notion that yes, money IS important in this case.
Agreed, people have to realize that this platform is just trying to take money and has to do things like this to keep itself alive. TH-cam seemed like a great idea at first, but now people realize how bad the system is.

What's the benefit of airing unskippable NSFW 10 minute-long ads on videos supposedly "made for children"? One 30 second ad, I can understand. 2 ads, a bit exaggerated but yeah, the site needs to make money. But NSFW ads? Dude, don't be the corporate prostitute, it's a hill not worth dying on.

Aside from the competition being smaller than TH-cam in terms of funding and its user base, TH-cam also has the advantage of having an early start in comparison to the other sites.
TH-cam has been around for nearly 20 years and has become integrated with the online world because of it.
Even if these other sites had the same funding that youtube had, they still wouldn't pull in big numbers due to TH-cam being THE platforming site to post videos on that so many people are familiar with worldwide.

Great video explaining this "snowball effect" of TH-cam's growth, and the main cause of its growth was literally its competitors "business models" to not say "incompetence".
The thing is: no other homemade video platform has HALF of TH-cam's features, creators would move long ago if wasn't for the justifiable fear of losing their audience, thus limiting revenue/sponsorships due to those being primarily centered around TH-cam, and the other platforms don't try to be better than TH-cam, they just try to copy TH-cam or paywall basic functions that TH-cam provides for free, also their lenience towards types of content perhaps are even harsher than TH-cam's despite some even allowing explicit content, offering almost no advantages whatsoever to the content creator or viewers over TH-cam.
There's also the political side of things, which TH-cam is very lenient about because i've seen videos from all spectrums, but i heard speculation of some platforms only allowing political takes from certain spectrums, since it's just a speculation, i can't confirm or deny it.
As a german speaking channel, I still got many videos false flagged, even after their one second "human review" it still get the yellow icon.
This just makes it really hard to do TH-cam as a fulltime Job
I do find it weird TH-cam hasn’t implemented any way to limit the amount of uploads being done. People basically using TH-cam as free video backup where those could be pushed to Google Drive.
Like unmonitized channels have limit of 10 private/hidden video uploads.
As long as they don't mess up it'll remain that way

I don't see how they could mess it up that badly at this point. They've done pretty much everything wrong I can think of, other than totally monetising the platform which they won't do. They've monetised more and more, become more restrictive, show blatant scams as advertisements, and here we still are

I think in the near future they will ban the last monetisation method for these channels, which is donations,

One of my biggest complaints about TH-cam happens all the time on channels I follow who cover things like true crime stories. Rape, suicide, murder, pedophiles, ect are all words (and the list continues to grow all the time) that they will no longer say in their videos for fear of getting demonetized. TH-cam states in their rules that it's ok for creators to talk about those subjects as long as it's done in an informative way and not promoting/encouraging those things. That's not the case however bc time and time again creators were getting demonetized for simply saying those words.
As far as the argument some ppl have about "well thats ok bc what if young kids watch it or ppl who have triggers related to those topics"...here is my opinion: If it's a child, the parent should be monitoring what the child is watching in the first place, not to mention there is TH-cam Kids for that very reason. As far as ppl getting triggered by those subjects, I'm sorry but you shouldn't be watching videos on true crimes anyway if those topics bother you. Those videos cover nothing but those topics...

Since our justice system is a joke, so many evil ppl get out to victimize even more ppl bc they only get a slap on the wrist. So how would we know to watch out for those ppl if we don't hear about a case in our area?
There is a guy who kidnapped, raped, tortured and held captive a young teenage girl for YEARS near my area. He was let out of prison after only serving a couple of years. Now the bastard has tall fences with barbwire around his house bc so many ppl have tried to deal him the punishment he deserves. We wouldn't have ever known about this if it wasn't for the crime being publicly talked about on a video. At least the ppl now in my area know about him and to keep their kids far away from him.

If bandwidth were the only hurdle, the future might see a site that uses AI to deconstruct video into a much smaller script-like file from which the player can then reconstruct the video. As loose analogies, think of vector graphics and MIDI files. I'm convinced we'll see this technology at some point, and it will greatly reduce storage and bandwidth. And a useful side-effect will be that resolution becomes irrelevant; you'll be able to reproduce it at any scale. 🎦

dailymotion does NOT allow adult content, after watching this video i uploaded some and they banned me and denied my ban appeal, now i will have to make a new dailymotion account
Rumble is growing but it still has a long way to go get close to TH-cam. I hope it continues to grow and provides an alternative for those that may not like TH-cam.
Odyssey just doesn't look like it's gaining much traction though I think their interface is considerably better than Rumble.
If there was a TH-cam alternative, new content creators would jump ship immediately to have a shot at getting their audience. It's a struggle now but I don't see an alternative anytime soon or at all.
Rumble, Odysee, Bitchute, and now X are all viable alternatives if people get behind them, and use them.

@@zander_the_space_nerd I hear ya, the only things Odysee needs to get fixed is their Android app, and mobile website versions being sluggish AF, along with creator payouts being a mess, as I know someone who makes Linux videos, and dealing with Odysee, and Rumble for that matter have both been a mess for getting the money they are owed. I've not heard anyone having issues with Bitchute however.

assuming he used the tool in TH-cam where you can put your script in and it will time the captions automaticly, then it would just skip the second clip of the same thing (as in only in the script once)
I'm actually very satisfied with Nebula and I try to switch every content creator I can from YT to NEB to boost the views there

I feel like another part most people don't seem to mention is TH-cam's creators and their followings. I feel like at least getting people with decent follower bases to cross-post videos to a hypothetical TH-cam alternative would be key.
To be honest, while I don't think it'll happen anytime soon I feel like it's inevitable that one day TH-cam will go the way of Facebook or Skype. Obviously making TH-cam's equivalent of Discord will not be easy, but the demand has been growing for at the very least a decade, so maybe someday the right chain of events will lead to it happening
Well, they kind of do. If you think about it, they have put something on their app called TH-cam Shorts. Therefore, there would be beef spawning in between TikTok, Instagram, Facebook, and Snapchat. (For those who don’t know, they all have short-form videos)
I believe AV1 video encoding is meant to save bit rate but maintain high quality? in an instance of something like that coming about, and as technology like this continues to grow, the feasibility of someone else coming to market to be an actual competitor is an increasing. The additional part keeping youtube successful is also the long library of content, considering they've been the default for so long... it will definitely make it harder for an emerging company but it just needs that encouragement for people to upload.
Also, considering the limbo state of tiktok at the moment, its probably a long shot for them if they did expand, and even if they did, im sure it will be met with various concerns such as cooperate and government/schools not allowing access due to the on-going issues with data security that keeps being claimed as a possible threat.
There is Rumble (which doesn’t have the selection or speed) but that’s about it.

That's just how the internet works, if your social media is the same as another platform, it will fail no matter what.
i remember google video. i watched saddam hussein get hung as a teen. wild days. basically large portions of the internet are memory holed. you had to be there, and you had to also be looking.
Some people don't like that TH-cam has put too many ads into videos. I understand they need to pay for their operations, but too many ads interrupting peoples videos

Nah. TH-cam needs advertisers... but advertisers need TH-cam too, specially in 2017 when the PewDiePie thing happened. Advertisers might have left, but they would have returned anyways because they NEED TH-cam. The management just became horrible around 2017-2018 and the appearance of Tik Tok sank TH-cam and now, it's not AS popular as it was in the mid 2010s.

Video hosting sites like youtube are expensive to maintain. TH-cam allows you to do that for free. This is why smosh turned to youtube and why youtube has no competition

this is where im posed with a qaundry- we say compitition is good for the economy and the consumer alot in economic discussion-however id say somethings outright demand to be monopolies by both of those forces- parallel it with streaming -it was demonstrably better when basically one company was doing it- but with all of these competitors its made both the products themselves and the end users experience with them worse. this kinda break the rule we set above dont it? in these cases- it seems monopolism actually is the play- the same effect happens in games- steam is the best one but i might shy away from an ea release even if its on steam just cause it requires origin take space on my pc. to be a redundant launcher. and so many companies I avoid for this same problem. i also dont got nebula or any history with youtube competitors- i pretty much only liked youtube since 2007 when i was a teenager watching on the young website. and thats just cause id rather not have to manage that many sites and bounce around all the time. id rather it be easier on me and the creators. maybe in these cases- we should have a monitored ecosystem- one allowed to have a defacto monopoly but is maintained and balanced by a strong labor union and government assistance. id rather it be that very voice of everyone that it states to be. but the profit motive rn is still shakey. id like some reassurance they wont pull the rug on the only youtube in town cause they eventually realize the cost will scale with them.

In russia we have vk video and rutube, which are technically the biggest TH-cam competitors here, also keep in mind Chine, where as far as i am aware, there is no youtube, so they may have the biggest competitor here (also that mandarine is the most spoken language in the world (i think??)).

Yea Squarespace won't be how anyone makes the next YT, thx though. Seriously I myself have had thoughts about trying to make a website like this (I've gotten pretty close), but the issue is if a YT 2.0 came around it shouldn't just be a copy paste replacement, and again I got close to making it, but there's still tons of stuff on the business side that you can't just replicate. You'd have to have a marketing plan, connections, etc.
If TH-cam disappeared tomorrow I would go to my own peertube instance I already host today. 😌

I hate that TH-cam Vanced is no longer functional. I rather use it than the native TH-cam app.
Odysee seems to be the closest in style to TH-cam, particularly the old pre-Google YT. If someone with deep pockets were to buy into it and get the word out, I think it would stand a serious chance of giving TH-cam a run for their money. Already some YT content creators are backing up their video content on there, getting more YT creators on the platform could give it the critical mass it needs to succeed.
