Damiano is a poet who can turn a sad story into a hauntingly beautiful fairytale. This song makes you feel so many emotions, it truly is like a raging river. I think it will be one of the most meaningful songs in their career, even after decades, cause so many of us have a personal interpretation and emotional link to it, Damiano himself gets emotional singing it, a true gem.
The powerful walls are those of the monumental cemetery in Rome. Coraline believed that if she died nothing would hurt her anymore. Her pain was so great, her confidence in people so low, that his love couldn't save her.

A cemetery of Rome is called "il castello" (the castle)
all of their italian songs are incredible… they’re honestly such good musicians, if you want to see thomas being insane on the guitar id recommend watching the live of kool kids sirius xm. ps. not sure if someone else has commented but the “castle” is supposedly referencing a cemetery in rome with big walls, essentially saying that she will finally “rest in peace” safely away from anything that will hurt her because she is protected by the walls of the cemetery.
Yes on Kool Kids on Sirius xm, is such a fun song and the guitarist (Thomas) go really crazy in there.
As comments show, there are many different interpretations floating around since Damiano has not been very explicit about his inspiration, other than that the song is based on reality. One very common one is that his girlfriend was the inspiration and in that case the monster in the song would be both chronic pain and depression (which his girlfriend has publically spoken about suffering from) that hinder you from living your life normally, getting out of the door etc. There is also a theory on it being about a troubled friend who committed suicide but this is simply a theory/rumour circling around, origin unknown.
Whatever the true inspiration, it surely gives room for a lot of interpretation and yours was a very plausible one too. For me this is their absolutely best work, both lyrically and instrumentally.

Best performance of the best Maneskin song, and honestly one of the best Rock ballads ever. A true masterpiece!
Damiano has said in several interviews that he prefers to write lyrics with different possible interpretations, so the listener can relate to what THEY feel. Consequently there is no “correct” meaning. He did however dedicate this performance to his girlfriend who has faced several challenges in her life.
For me personally the song reminded me of my granddaughter’s challenges after losing her mother, as well as several young women I’ve known with traumatic childhoods.
The castle exists, it is a large cemetery on the outskirts of Rome, where there are very large walls where souls find a safe shelter, where those who have suffered finally find peace.
The song tells the story of his girlfriend, she confirm it in an Italian TV program (her name is not really Coraline but Giorgia). She suffers from a disease that is not very well known, although much more frequent than what is known, which causes her a lot of pain. It is called endometriosis, very strong pain in the uterus, some live on morphine and have a very hard time getting pregnant or simply cannot ("she lost the fruit of her womb"). And the doctors paid no attention to her, they said that it was all in her head, for that he said "tell me your truth". And she had family problems, her father abandoned them, etc.
Maneskin is not just Damiano, he is a poet but they write their songs together and they are a group.
I think the rendition with this magnificent orchestra is something epic! This piece should be put in a music library and protected from the distruction. The song is already a masterpiece rock ballade but this musical arrangement must be protected. The classic instruments like strings elevate the tone of drama. Great poetry!

Coraline treats a sad story. In the end Damiano speaks of "a castle with such powerful walls that if you want to live inside it nothing will be able to affect it anymore" and this castle refers to the cemetery of Rome. Coraline is not a real person, or rather the song is dedicated to a real person who is not named Coraline. In reality, behind this pseudonym is Damiano's girlfriend or Giorgia Soleri. Coraline does not speak - or at least not only - of an eating disorder. It is enough to know the story of Giorgia Soleri to understand that the verses of the song tell her story: that of a girl fighting against two strong disorders of the female genital system, endometriosis and vulvodynia.
The ending, however obvious it is, is to say that the struggle, however hard it is, ends in death but as long as there is life, the only thing to do is fight and continue.

or if you wanna go on a less extreme route - isolation, total, both physical and emotional, kinda how you close off and shy away even from the people that wish to help you (ie =i'll be the water you drink, the meaning of good, i'll even be a soldier .... i'll be a battle banner, a shield or your silver sword=)
in one of the interviews damiano (the lead singer) said that the story ends badly and it doesn't have a happy ending. he also said that while the story based on someone he knew, it is open for interpretation

i just want to say 1 small detail, on time 7:18 the craziness of caroline starts. the monster locked in a cage is exactly what you said "caroline's voice being held", in the end she dies, so no happy ending.

there are no interpretations, these people only invent. Damiano himself, who is the singer and who writes the lyrics, told after this performance that Coraline is his girlfriend, she has that name tattooed on her. His girlfriend suffers from vulvodynia, a disease that until recently was not even recognized.
