I'm watching this at 12:30 am, and I'm crying. The hundreds of little boats following the Queen Mary at the end of the video is honestly one of the most beautiful things I've ever seen.
My folks attended an event in Long Beach after the Mary was retired. Captain Treasure Jones was there and my mother had a dance with him. I’ll always remember that!
I was 10 years old and was fortunate enough to to be on her last voyage to Southampton! I dined at Captain Treasure Jones table where I had smoked salmon for the first time. He was so charming and handsome, so knowledgeable! I won $45 pounds playing Bingo! I met actor Michael Rennie down in the nursery, and held his granddaughter! My maiden last name is Rennie! That was so cool! I could go on and on about how much fun my older brother and I had exploring every inch of The Queen Mary. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🚢
My Grandfather (RIP) loved serving on that ship, he was a steward and he was on her maiden voyage and the last as featured in this video, he even got a special medal to commemorate this, he also served on many other famous liners as part of his job, but his real heart was with The Mary, as he lived in Southampton my mother always said she got very sad as when she was at school she could hear the horns blowing in the distance as The Mary set off she knew she would not be seeing her father for a while. She also remembers her mother driving up to the dock and seeing the sheer size of the ship which she said was quite scary towering above her.
My Grandad saw her the day she left on her maiden voyage from Southampton, I saw her in 1996 in Long Beach while in the USA on holiday and had a tour around her , what a beautiful girl she is and yes I could feel she was alive .
My father came back from WW 2 on the Queen Mary and I have stayed on this great ship . Sitting in Picadilly Circus ( central part of the ship ) at night I felt SO warm and comfortable . I never thought of a piece of machinery as being alive before . The Queen Mary changed my mind .
My Mother came across from Birmingham England (1957) to immigrate to America as a 14 y/o girl. She went ashore in France just to say she touched France. She almost was not allowed back on. In 1986 we saw Queen Mary in Long Beach when my Mother came out and saw me when I was stationed out at Camp Pendleton. ( Ironically it is the only Naval Ship I set foot upon during my 4 year Naval Corpsman time with the US Navy.) Years later, I offered to take her back to England. She declined. She told me she did not want to spoil her memories of England. In her mind England will always be what she left it in 1957. Going there would ruin it. She is gone now. No doubt in Heaven she returned back to England for a while. If I ever go back to California. I will go again. I will stay in the Hotel. If possible.
Last june 30, 2020 I celebrated 60 years since my first crossing as student to attend my first year at Brandeis university as a Wien student from Southampton to NYC, Pier 4. Can never forget those five days and nights on this great and marvelous ship. Thanks again.
Sad that she is at the brink of her death, but Long Beach has just regained full ownership of her again and is approving a 2.5 million restoration budget to keep her afloat. 6/11/21
Only a small group of people can say they worked the ship in Long Beach. I was very blessed to be a tour guide for 4 years so she was my home away from home, you grow attachment only a crew member can explain
It’s can’t be done. Ships weren’t designed for dry docks, the sides would buckle under the weight of the rest of the ship because they need the constant pressure against the plates of the hull. This is why some “museum ships” are permanently docked with earth around the hull, up to the water line. At least Long Beach has regained control and beginning to do much needed repairs to keep her afloat. All the previous “management companies” just used her to make money and let her deteriorate.
From what I understand, queen mary was the most elegant, well crafted, exotic liner to ever twist up the seas…. Not sure anyone could’ve predicted the undignified ending that awaited this classy old girl!!….
Long live the Queen! She has served her Country for over thirty years and nie she is the only witness of the excellent years, when multi-funnelled liners crossed the Ocean on a regular basis. I AM myself a sort of her biographer here in Poland, the country of another great liner, the BATORY. That ship that once sailed on song with a group of British children evacuated from fighting Island to more safe Australia. 'Mary' was LONG AS A STREET AND LOFTY AS A TOWER. Went through all the dangers of both the sea and the war, the last multi-stack liner in history. Multi-stacked express liners were 'everyday's bread' to workers of Vulcan at what was then the greatest harbour city od Prussia (Stettin/Szczecin). One of their multi-stacked liners did even survive a collision with an Atlantic iceberg in 1907. ♍🇵🇱🇬🇧👍😊
"I dont want to take another ship i want to finnish this ship in all of her glory" the queen mary ISNT just a ship.ITS a living ship and the most beutifull.
shame I wasn't alive back then because I just so happen to live in Southampton so its a shame the ship isnt in service anymore. if it was docked in Southampton that would have been awesome. but maybe ill go to long beach one day to pay Queen Mary a visit
Wow I wish Queen Elizabeth 2 had the same options as the Queen Mary. Would have been really awesome if the US or the UK would have made a choice to retire QE2 the same way and made her the same way as a floating hotel either in the UK or in the United States. Cunard made a horrible move in 2008 when they sold QE2 to Dubai. Lucky we have the Queen Mary here in US. Hopefully Cunard will make a good move when they retire Queen Mary 2 when that time comes.
Good gracious! At 2:40 I spotted a bottle of Mateus Rose, a "popular" wine in its day from Portugal. Not really "appropriate" in the circumstances of the 'Captain's Table' of the Queen Mary on her last voyage. This great ship would have been launched with the smashing of a bottle of Champagne across its bows. It should have been similarly honoured at the end by drinking magnums of the stuff!
Depends on what was being served i suppose. I was fortunate enough to dine at Captain Treasure Jones table on this last voyage to Southampton. He was so charming!
There’s a video on TH-cam, and I’ve lost it, where Treasure-Jones is being interviewed and he talks about how nowadays, instead of sailing on great ships to travel, they just get on one of these “damned wind machines”, and fly. If anyone has a link to that video or a link to that interview, I would appreciate it.
Le Visionarium it’s a great documentary. I loved the ‘characters’ and the way they spoke. Hope I’ve sent the correct documentary, and I hope you see it soon. I know sometimes I don’t get notifications of replies for months sometimes.
She's been my home for a couple months when I became homeless I would sneek aboard and stow away where ever possible but the sad thing is her life is on the line if not saved soon Long beach is washing her hands with the Queen Mary after all the money she brought in for that city and owners it's all coming to an end I hope someone or people will save her it's not just British history but Hollywood history as well she had been in so many movies or had so many special occasions rather proposals engagements etc she is a true piece of History and resting place for those that have passed away on board her to see her scrapped and raped for parts would break my heart 💔💔😩👎🇬🇧🇺🇲🤔😩

@OJ
She's a beauty too,but the RMS is glorious with an incredible history.

The original RMS Queen Mary.

Technically yes,but qm2 is referred to as just that, maybe so as to avoid some confusion with the original ship.

6:35 ...Wow...you can not only see the emotion on the captain but you can feel it. I even got a little choked up watching the captain's face.
Not to mention all those hundreds of ships surrounding them as they pull into Long Beach, CA.
I'm proud to say I stayed the night on The Queen Mary last year, what an honor!

I wish they still built Ocean Liners... not the ugly blocks on water
Qm2 is the last ocean liner in service
Awe...Very Touching...💔
Brought me to tears.
Long Beach has got to do something with the queen Mary before it starts taking on water like removing the wall around her and putting a dry dock down
They wont. So sad it ended up in cheesy long beach

The Queen Elizabeth was a great ocean liner too people forget that, it made its maiden voyage in the same year i think.
QUEEN MARY was the second ship Treasure Jones took into retirement in three years having taken the MAURETANIA into retirement in 1965
