  • Full title reads: "The Queen Mary leaves the Clyde".
    Near Glasgow, Scotland.
Luxury liner, the Queen Mary leaves the docks at Clydebank where she was built for her first trip on the sea. M/S of Queen Mary (wife of late King George V) standing at microphone behind a rain covered window.
Various shots of Queen Mary ship. Tug boats guide the ship out of fitting out bay. She has to be navigated down tricky 15 mile stretch of River Clyde. On board, with two pilots, is Sir Edgar Britten, the Commodore of the Cunard White Star Line.
We hear sounds of crowds cheering and sirens of other vessels sounding as Queen Mary ship moves away from docks. Aeroplanes swoop past over head. Good aerial shot of Queen Mary on River Clyde.
Lots more shots of ship leaving docks. Crowds watch from quayside.
Note: sound track does not match all shots in neg. - looks like neg. has been reedited at some point or maybe some shots are missing. Possibly another version of neg. exists somewhere else? AH 2001.

Long before the so called space race, a countries technical prowess was shown off in their ships. The largest moving objects ever made by man. I've been aboard the Queen Mary in Long Beach, she's incredible to see and experience in person. Hand built without the aid of computers or even a calculator, just by the knowledge and skill of man. Truly a marvel to behold...Hats off to the men that engineered and built this magnificent vessel!!!

This newsreel has got the wrong commentary...the newsreel mainly showed the ship entering the King George V dry dock in Southampton...(note that the 'new docks' weren't completed then) ...the area on the right side has yet to be reclaimed...nowadays it's the site of the container port. The flat heathland of Hythe and the Eastern Edge of the New a forest is seen behind the ship. The King George V dry dock is not used as a dry Dock now...but as a scrap metal loading point for transit to China. The mountains of scrap metal can be seen from the main road or from trains between Southampton and Redbridge. Rob.

At least it’s still in use,! Fun fact the Majestic was the first ship to use it!

And now, unfortunately, here in Scotland we can’t even produce two wee ferries.

Not true, as of October, she is getting million dollar repairs. Long Beach plans to keep her since she offers 1/6 of Los Angeles tourism

She's in better shape now than she's been in since retirement, and is currently being repaired and restored. The City of Long Beach is doing right by the Queen. Your comment is way off base.
